Normalized Natural Gradient Adaptive Filtering for Sparse and Nonsparse Systems
This paper introduces a class of normalized natural gradient algorithms (NNG) for adaptive filtering tasks. Natural gradient techniques are useful for generating relatively simple adaptive filtering algorithms where the space of the adaptive coefficients is curved or warped with respect to Euclidean space. The advantage of normalizing gradient adaptive filters is that constant rates of convergence for signals with wide dynamic ranges may be achieved. We show that the so-called proportionate normalized least mean squares (PNLMS) algorithm, an adaptive filter that converges quickly for sparse solutions, is in fact an NNG on a certain parameter space warping. We also show that by choosing a warping that favors diverse or dense impulse responses, we may obtain a new adaptive algorithm, the inverse proportionate NLMS (INLMS) algorithm. Ecologically Sensitive Wetlands on Maui: Groundwater Protection Strategy for Hawaii
The EPA Ground-Water Protection Strategy has established differential protection levels based on the beneficial uses of groundwaters. Groundwater resources that are: (1) Irreplaceable sources of drinking water; and/or (2) Ecologically Vital are designated as of unusually high value. To determine those groundwaters that meet the EPA criteria for qualifying as âEcologically Vitalâ we have examined 24 groundwater based (wetland) ecological systems on the island of Maui. An inventory of the physical, biological and cultural characteristics of each area including âred flagâ features has been developed and coded. Using this âhabitat codeâ a rating system that reflects the sensitivity, i.e. âuniquenessâ of ânonrenewableâ attributes of each system was designed and 18 âecologically vitalâ habitats were identified that meet the EPA criteria for Class 1 level of groundwater protection. A Wideband Triple-Mode Differentially-Fed Microstrip Patch Antenna

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://dx.doi.org/10.1109/LAWP.2021.3074302A wideband differentially-fed microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with tripe-resonant modes is presented in this letter. The proposed triple-mode MPA is realized by combining two dual-mode MPAs (MPA-I and MPA-II) with different resonant frequency ratios. Firstly, the TM0,1 mode and TM0,1/2 mode of dual-mode MPA-I can be concurrently excited by adding a pair of coupling shorted patches beside the strip MPA. The ratio of f0,1/2/f0,1 can be easily adjusted by moving the shorting pins between the strip MPA and shorted patches. Secondly, by properly designing the dimensions of a conventional MPA, the TM0,1 and TM2,1 modes of dual-mode MPA-II are simultaneously excited. To further reduce the ratio of f2,1/f0,1, four slots are elaborately etched on the conventional MPA. Finally, by combining the two dual-mode MPAs, a triple-mode MPA with the frequency ratio of f0,1/2:f2,1:f0,1 = 1.2:1.1:1 is realized. To verify the design concept, a prototype of triple-mode MPA was fabricated and measured. Experimental results show that the proposed microstrip antenna achieves a wide bandwidth of 26.5%, a low cross-polarization of -23 dB, and high harmonic suppression.Peer reviewe

__Abstract__
âEven Buurtenâ is een Rotterdams initiatief. Hierin proberen professionals uit
zorg en welzijn via een integrale wijkaanpak de sociale netwerken rondom
thuiswonende ouderen te verstevigen. Doel van dit sociale netwerk is (vroeg)
signalering en het bieden van concrete hulp en ondersteuning aan kwetsbare
ouderen. Uit onderzoek naar het âEven Buurtenâ-initiatief komt het belang van
een sterk sociaal buurtnetwerk duidelijk naar voren. Het succes van een integrale
wijkaanpak hangt in sterke mate af van een integraal formeel eÂŽn informeel
ondersteunend netwerk in de buurt. Formele en informele netwerken werken
echter nog niet goed samen. En ook binnen het formele netwerk (bijv. tussen
zorg en welzijn) wordt nog onvoldoende samengewerkt om kwetsbare ouderen
optimale ondersteuning te bieden. Deze klinische les beschrijft hoe integrale,
wijkgerichte ondersteuning beter tegemoetkomt aan de behoeften en wensen
van kwetsbare ouderen
Many-body effects in 16O(e,e'p)
Effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations on exclusive reactions on
closed-shell nuclei leading to single-hole states are studied using
( MeV, ) as an example. The quasi-hole wave
function, calculated from the overlap of translationally invariant many-body
variational wave functions containing realistic spatial, spin and isospin
correlations, seems to describe the initial state of the struck proton
accurately inside the nucleus, however it is too large at the surface. The
effect of short-range correlations on the final state is found to be largely
cancelled by the increase in the transparency for the struck proton. It is
estimated that the values of the spectroscopic factors obtained with the DWIA
may increase by a few percent due to correlation effects in the final state.Comment: 21 Pages, PHY-7849-TH-9
Is manganese-doped diamond a ferromagnetic semiconductor?
We use density-functional theoretical methods to examine the recent
prediction, based on a mean-field solution of the Zener model, that diamond
doped by Mn (with spin S=5/2) would be a dilute magnetic semiconductor that
remains ferromagnetic well above room temperature. Our findings suggest this to
be unlikely, for four reasons: (1) substitutional Mn in diamond has a low-spin
S=1/2 ground state; (2) the substitutional site is energetically unfavorable
relative to the much larger "divacancy" site; 3) Mn in the divacancy site is an
acceptor, but with only hyperdeep levels, and hence the holes are likely to
remain localized; (4) the calculated Heisenberg couplings between Mn in nearby
divacancy sites are two orders of magnitude smaller than for substitutional Mn

Monte Carlo integration in Glauber model analysis of reactions of halo nuclei
Reaction and elastic differential cross sections are calculated for light
nuclei in the framework of the Glauber theory. The optical phase-shift function
is evaluated by Monte Carlo integration. This enables us to use the most
accurate wave functions and calculate the phase-shift functions without
approximation. Examples of proton nucleus (e.g. p-He, p-Li) and
nucleus-nucleus (e.g. HeC) scatterings illustrate the effectiveness
of the method. This approach gives us a possibility of a more stringent
analysis of the high-energy reactions of halo nuclei.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure
The transcriptional repressor bs69 is a conserved target of the e1a proteins from several human adenovirus species
Early region 1A (E1A) is the first viral protein produced upon human adenovirus (HAdV) infection. This multifunctional protein transcriptionally activates other HAdV early genes and reprograms gene expression in host cells to support productive infection. E1A functions by interacting with key cellular regulatory proteins through short linear motifs (SLiMs). In this study, the molecular determinants of interaction between E1A and BS69, a cellular repressor that negatively regulates E1A transactivation, were systematically defined by mutagenesis experiments. We found that a minimal sequence comprised of MPNLVPEV, which contains a conserved PXLXP motif and spans residues 112â119 in HAdV-C5 E1A, was necessary and sufficient in binding to the myeloid, Nervy, and DEAF-1 (MYND) domain of BS69. Our study also identified residues P113 and L115 as critical for this interaction. Furthermore, the HAdV-C5 and-A12 E1A proteins from species C and A bound BS69, but those of HAdV-B3,-E4,-D9,-F40, and-G52 from species B, E, D, F, and G, respectively, did not. In addition, BS69 functioned as a repressor of E1A-mediated transactivation, but only for HAdV-C5 and HAdV-A12 E1A. Thus, the PXLXP motif present in a subset of HAdV E1A proteins confers interaction with BS69, which serves as a negative regulator of E1A mediated transcriptional activation
