The relationship between various live animal scores/measurements and carcass classification for conformation and fatness with meat yield and distribution, and ultimate carcass value
End of project reportAccordingly, the primary objectives of the following study were to:
(1) determine the relationship of live animal muscular and skeletal scores, ultrasonically scanned muscle
and fat depth measurements of the m. longissimus dorsi, and carcass conformation and fat scores with
kill-out proportion, carcass composition and value.
(2) Specifically develop and test the accuracy of prediction equations for carcass meat, fat and bone
proportions, derived from carcass conformation and fat scores, and develop prediction equations for
total carcass composition from hind-quarter composition
Transition Spectra for a BCS Superconductor with Multiple Gaps: Model Calculations for MgB_2
We analyze the qualitative features in the transition spectra of a model
superconductor with multiple energy gaps, using a simple extension of the
Mattis-Bardeen expression for probes with case I and case II coherence factors.
At temperature T = 0, the far infrared absorption edge is, as expected,
determined by the smallest gap. However, the large thermal background may mask
this edge at finite temperatures and instead the secondary absorption edges
found at Delta_i+Delta_j may become most prominent. At finite T, if certain
interband matrix elements are large, there may also be absorption peaks at the
gap difference frequencies | Delta_i-Delta_j | . We discuss the effect of
sample quality on the measured spectra and the possible relation of these
predictions to the recent infrared absorption measurement on MgB_2
Effect of monensin on weight gain, growth traits, and semen characteristics in yearling beef bulls
Feeding the ionophore monensin to yearling beef bulls improved (P\u3c.05) weight gain by 4.2%. Final hip height was similar between treatments, but bulls fed monensin had almost 1 cm greater (P\u3c.01) scrotal circumference and more than 10 cm 2 larger (P\u3c.01) pelvic area. Semen characteristics generally were unaffected by treatment. However, bulls fed monensin had less (P\u3c.01) semen motility than controls. Approximately 30 sperm morphology traits were evaluated; values were similar between treatments except for those traits listed. Collection date tended to influence (P\u3c.15) volume, concentration, motility, and postfreeze characteristics
On-brane data for braneworld stars
Stellar structure in braneworlds is markedly different from that in ordinary
general relativity. As an indispensable first step towards a more general
analysis, we completely solve the ``on brane'' 4-dimensional Gauss and Codazzi
equations for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric star in a
Randall--Sundrum type II braneworld. We then indicate how this on-brane
boundary data should be propagated into the bulk in order to determine the full
5-dimensional spacetime geometry. Finally, we demonstrate how this procedure
can be generalized to solid objects such as planets.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX4, v2: Main algorithm and results substantially

Assessment of Sodium Cyanide Toxicity on Freshwater Teleosts
Short term definitive tests by static renewal bioassay method were conducted to determine the toxicity of sodium cyanide on freshwater teleosts, Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis mossambicus. Fishes were exposed to various concentrations of sodium cyanide for 96 h and the mortalities were recorded. The acute toxicity (LC50) of sodium cyanide calculated over 96 h period for C. catla, L. rohita, C. mrigala C. carpio and O. mossambicus was found to be 0.11 mg/L, 0.19 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, 1 mg/L and 0.420 mg/L, respectively. Behavioural patterns were observed in lethal (1, 2, 3 and 4 d) concentration. Some of the common behavioural changes exhibited by teleosts in toxic media include hyperexcitability, erratic and darting movements with imbalanced swimming activity, which might be due to inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase activity and decreased blood pH. The combination of cytotoxic hypoxia with lactate acidosis depresses the central nervous system and myocardium, which are the most sensitive critical sites for anoxia, resulting in respiratory arrest and death
Optical detection development for the Hogan quantum holographic noise experiment
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2010.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 35).Craig Hogan recently proposed a "quantum holographic" noise that could potentially raise the expected noise floor for some current and upcoming high precision interferometers. Rainer Weiss et al. have designed an experiment searching for the noise in two coaligned Michelson interferometers. We have assembled and tested a photodetection system to measure broadband phase correlation between two optical signals, to be used in the noise detection experiment. This included modifying and characterizing photodetectors and setting up a system to record the signal correlation between the two detectors. We altered a LabVIEW program to assist in data collection and explored several ways to improve the data recording rate, which will allow larger data sets and thus longer runs. The detection system had a shot noise limited sensitivity of 4nV/vHz and allowed for measurements at the level of 1 % correlation.by David Bruce Kelley.S.B
