    Field-induced domain wall propagation: beyond the one-dimensional model

    We have investigated numerically the field-driven propagation of perpendicularly magnetized ferromagnetic layers. It was then compared to the historical one-dimensional domain wall (DW) propagation model widely used in spintronics studies of magnetic nanostructures. In the particular regime of layer thickness (h) of the order of the exchange length, anomalous velocity peaks appear in the precessional regime, their shape and position shifting with h. This has also been observed experimentally. Analyses of the simulations show a distinct correlation between the curvature of the DW and the twist of the magnetization vector within it, and the velocity peak. Associating a phenomenological description of this twist with a four-coordinate DW propagation model, we reproduce very well these kinks and show that they result from the torque exerted by the stray field created by the domains on the twisted magnetization. The position of the peaks is well predicted from the DW's first flexural mode frequency, and depends strongly on the layer thickness. Comparison of the proposed model to DW propagation data obtained on dilute semiconductor ferromagnets GaMnAs and GaMnAsP sheds light on the origin of the measured peaks

    Irreversible magnetization switching using surface acoustic waves

    An analytical and numerical approach is developped to pinpoint the optimal experimental conditions to irreversibly switch magnetization using surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The layers are magnetized perpendicular to the plane and two switching mechanisms are considered. In precessional switching, a small in-plane field initially tilts the magnetization and the passage of the SAW modifies the magnetic anisotropy parameters through inverse magneto-striction, which triggers precession, and eventually reversal. Using the micromagnetic parameters of a fully characterized layer of the magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)(As,P), we then show that there is a large window of accessible experimental conditions (SAW amplitude/wave-vector, field amplitude/orientation) allowing irreversible switching. As this is a resonant process, the influence of the detuning of the SAW frequency to the magnetic system's eigenfrequency is also explored. Finally, another - non-resonant - switching mechanism is briefly contemplated, and found to be applicable to (Ga,Mn)(As,P): SAW-assisted domain nucleation. In this case, a small perpendicular field is applied opposite the initial magnetization and the passage of the SAW lowers the domain nucleation barrier.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Deep and shallow electronic states associated to doping, contamination and intrinsic defects in ε-Ga2O3 epilayers

    Deep and shallow electronic states in undoped and Si-doped ε-Ga2O3 epilayers grown by MOVPE on c-oriented Al2O3 were investigated by cathodoluminescence, optical absorption, photocurrent spectroscopy, transport measurements, and electron-paramagnetic-resonance. Nominally undoped films were highly resistive, with a room temperature resistivity varying in the range 107- 1013 Ωcm depending on the carrier gas used during growth. Films grown with He carrier were generally more resistive than those grown with H2 carrier and exhibited a Fermi level located at about 0.8 eV below the conduction band edge, which tends to shift deeper with temperature. This can tentatively be attributed to the combined action of deep donors (probably carbon impurities and oxygen vacancies) and deep acceptors (Ga vacancies and related complexes), which compensate residual shallow donors. There are strong experimental hints that nitrogen also behaves as deep acceptor. Room temperature resistivity as low as 0.42 Ωcm and electron concentrations around 1018 cm−3 were obtained by silicon doping. Si was confirmed to act as shallow donor with sufficiently high solubility. A variable range hopping conduction was observed in a wide temperature interval in the n-type layers, and compensation by native acceptors also plays a major role on conduction mechanisms. Previous evaluations of curvature and anisotropy of the conduction band are confirmed, which allows for the estimation of the electron effective mass. The present experimental data are discussed considering the theoretical predictions for point defect formation in the ε-polymorph as well as literature data on extrinsic and intrinsic defects in β-Ga2O3

    Coherent manipulation of nitrogen vacancy centers in 4H silicon carbide with resonant excitation

    Silicon carbide (SiC) has become a key player in realization of scalable quantum technologies due to its ability to host optically addressable spin qubits and wafer-size samples. Here, we have demonstrated optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with resonant excitation, and clearly identified the ground state energy levels of the NV centers in 4H-SiC. Coherent manipulation of NV centers in SiC has been achieved with Rabi and Ramsey oscillations. Finally, we show the successful generation and characterization of single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in SiC employing ion implantation. Our results are highlighting the key role of NV centers in SiC as a potential candidate for quantum information processing

    Crystal structures of self-assembled nanotubes from flexible macrocycles by weak interactions

The assembly is driven by the propensity of the macrocycles to create nearly flat structures displaying a void space within them and the cooperativity of weak directional interactions such as dipole–dipole interactions and CH***Ohydrogen bonds and non-directional interactions such as van der Waals contacts.     Quality of life in patients with transcatheter aortic valve implantation: an analysis from the INTERVENT project

    BackgroundTranscatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a standard treatment for patients with aortic valve stenosis due to its very low mortality and complication rates. However, survival and physical integrity are not the only important factors. Quality of life (QoL) improvement is a crucial part in the evaluation of therapy success.MethodsPatients with TAVI were questioned about their QoL before, one month and one year after the intervention as part of the INTERVENT registry trial at Mainz University Medical Center. Three different questionnaires were included in the data collection (Katz ADL, EQ-5D-5l, PHQ-D).ResultsWe included 285 TAVI patients in the analysis (mean age 79.8 years, 59.4% male, mean EuroSCORE II 3.8%). 30-day mortality was 3.6%, complications of any kind occurred in 18.9% of the patients. Main finding was a significant increase in the general state of health measured on the visual analog scale by an average of 4.53 (± 23.58) points (BL to 1-month follow-up, p = 0.009) and by 5.19 (± 23.64) points (BL to 12-month follow-up, p = 0.016). There was also an improvement of depression symptoms, which was reflected in a decrease in the total value of the PHQ-D by 1.67 (± 4.75) points (BL to 12-month follow-up, p = 0.001). The evaluation of the EQ-5D-5l showed a significant improvement in mobility after one month (M = −0.41 (± 1.31), p < 0.001. Regarding the independence of the patients, no significant difference could be found. Apart from that, patients with risk factors, comorbidities or complications also benefited from the intervention despite their poor starting position.ConclusionWe could show an early benefit of QoL in TAVI patients with significant improvement in the subjective state of health and a decrease in symptoms of depression. These findings were consistent over 1 year of follow up

    Switching the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy by ion irradiation induced compensation

    In the present work, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of GaMnAsP is modified by helium ion irradiation. According to the micro-magnetic parameters, e.g. resonance fields and anisotropy constants deduced from ferromagnetic resonance measurements, a rotation of the magnetic easy axis from out-of-plane [001] to in-plane [100] direction is achieved. From the application point of view, our work presents a novel avenue in modifying the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in GaMnAsP with the possibility of lateral patterning by using lithography or focused ion beam

    3D echocardiographic reference ranges for normal left ventricular volumes and strain: Results fromthe EACVI NORRE study

    Aim To obtain the normal ranges for 3D echocardiography (3DE) measurement of left ventricular (LV) volumes, function, and strain from a large group of healthy volunteers. Methods and results A total of 440 (mean age: 45613 years) out of the 734 healthy subjects enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study had good-quality 3DE data sets that have been analysed with a vendor-independent software package allowing homogeneous measurements regardless of the echocardiographic machine used to acquire the data sets. Upper limits of LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were larger in men (97 and 42 mL/m2) than in women (82 and 35 mL/m2; P<0.0001). Conversely, lower limits of LV ejection fraction were higher in women than in men (51% vs. 50%; P<0.01). Similarly, all strain components were higher in women than in men. Lower range was -18.6% in men and -19.5% in women for 3D longitudinal strain, -27.0% and -27.6% for 3D circumferential strain, -33.2% and -34.4% for 3D tangential strain and 38.8% and 40.7% for 3D radial strain, respectively. LV volumes decreased with age in both genders (P<0.0001), whereas LV ejection fraction increased with age only in men. Among 3DE LV strain components, the only one, which did not change with age was longitudinal strain. Conclusion The NORRE study provides applicable 3D echocardiographic reference ranges for LV function assessment. Our data highlight the importance of age- and gender-specific reference values for both LV volumes and strain. All rights reserved

    The Combined Dexamethasone/CRH Test (DEX/CRH Test) and Prediction of Acute Treatment Response in Major Depression

    In this study the predictive value of the combined dexamethasone/CRH test (DEX/CRH test) for acute antidepressant response was investigated. In 114 depressed inpatients suffering from unipolar or bipolar depression (sample 1) the DEX/CRH test was performed at admission and shortly before discharge. During their stay in the hospital patients received different antidepressant treatment regimens. At admission, the rate of nonsuppression (basal cortisol levels >75.3 nmol/l) was 24.6% and was not related to the later therapeutic response. Moreover, 45 out of 114 (39.5%) patients showed an enhancement of HPA axis function at discharge in spite of clinical improvement. In a second sample, 40 depressed patients were treated either with reboxetine or mirtazapine for 5 weeks. The DEX/CRH test was performed before, after 1 week, and after 5 weeks of pharmacotherapy. Attenuation of HPA axis activity after 1 week was associated with a more pronounced alleviation of depressive symptoms after 5-week mirtazapine treatment, whereas downregulation of HPA system activity after 5 weeks was related to clinical response to reboxetine. However, early improvement of HPA axis dysregulation was not necessarily followed by a beneficial treatment outcome. Taken together, performance of a single DEX/CRH test does not predict the therapeutic response. The best predictor for response seems to be an early attenuation of HPA axis activity within 1 or 2 weeks. However, early improvement of HPA system dysfunction is not a sufficient condition for a favourable response. Since a substantial part of depressive patients display a persistence of HPA axis hyperactivity at discharge, downregulation of HPA system function is not a necessary condition for acute clinical improvement either. Our data underline the importance of HPA axis dysregulation for treatment outcome in major depression, although restoration of HPA system dysfunction seems to be neither a necessary nor a sufficient determinant for acute treatment response
