X-ray Images of Hot Accretion Flows

We consider the X-ray emission due to bremsstrahlung processes from hot, low radiative-efficiency accretion flows around supermassive and galactic black holes. We calculate surface brightness profiles and Michelson visibility functions for a range of density profiles, rho ~ r^(-3/2+p), with 0 < p < 1, to allow for the presence of outflows. We find that although the 1 keV emitting region in these flows can always extend up to 10^6 Schwarzschild radii (R_S), their surface brightness profiles and visibility functions are strongly affected by the specific density profile. The advection-dominated solutions with no outflows (p=0) lead to centrally peaked profiles with characteristic sizes of only a few tens of R_S. Solutions with strong outflows (p~1) lead to flat intensity profiles with significantly larger characteristic sizes of up to 10^6 R_S. This implies that low luminosity galactic nuclei, such as M87, may appear as extended X-ray sources when observed with current X-ray imaging instruments. We show that X-ray brightness profiles and their associated visibility functions may be powerful probes for determining the relevant mode of accretion and, in turn, the properties of hot accretion flows. We discuss the implications of our results for observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the planned X-ray interferometer MAXIM.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal, minor change

Deviancy as social problem: the answers of psychology [La devianza come problema sociale: le risposte della psicologia]

Scope: Deviant behaviour is the one that breaks those rules most people regard as social. The study describes and analyzes the characteristics of this behavior. Materials and Methods: Psychology and also the latest Sociological Theories have tried to find the causes of deviance in the complex and difficult relationship with parental figures, with Authority in general, with the Part of society that holds Power etc. Results and Conclusions: While admitting the possible presence of some kinds of personality disorders in the deviant’s psychic structure we cannot avoid focusing on the methodologies used for the integration of citizen above all in those fundamental units in charge of minors’ education: Family and School. Advanced teaching methods which can provide behavioural models and rules are to be strongly encouraged, without forgetting the essential dimension of playing, of research and also of individual personal growth. Nevertheless we must be aware that ‘breaking’ the rules with a sense of responsibility and discernment helps a young man to grow informed and responsible, able to renew his behavioural patterns often dated and deficient albeit mainly passively accepted

An Existence Theorem for Evolution Inclusions Involving Opposite Monotonicities

AbstractIn this paper we examine evolution inclusions of the subdifferential type with the set-valued perturbation being nonconvex valued and dissipative. Under certain generally mild hypotheses on the data, we prove the existence of a strong global solution, extending earlier analogous results by M. Ôtani and A. Cellina-V. Staicu. An example of a distributed parameter system is also presented in detail

High serum osteopontin levels are associated with prevalent fractures and worse lipid profile in post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes

Purpose: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have increased fracture risk. Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein involved in bone remodeling and inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of OPN with fracture prevalence and with metabolic parameters in post-menopausal women with T2DM. Methods: Sixty-four post-menopausal women with T2DM (age 67.0 ± 7.8 years, diabetes duration 8.9 ± 6.7 years), enrolled in a previous study, were followed up (3.6 ± 0.9 years). Previous fragility fractures were recorded. The FRAX score (without BMD) was calculated and biochemical parameters (plasma glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile and renal function) were assessed. Serum 25OH-vitamin D, calcium, PTH and OPN were evaluated at baseline. The association between OPN and fracture prevalence at baseline was evaluated by a logistic model. Results: OPN levels were higher in patients with previous fractures (n.25) than in patients without previous fractures at baseline (n.39) (p = 0.006). The odds of having fractures at baseline increased by 6.7 (1.9–31.4, 95% CI, p = 0.007) for each increase of 1 ng/ml in OPN levels, after adjustment for vitamin D and HbA1c levels. Fracture incidence was 4.7%. Higher OPN associated with a decrease in HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.048), after adjustment for age, basal HDL-cholesterol, basal and follow-up HbA1c and follow-up duration. 25OH-vitamin D associated with an increase in FRAX-estimated probability of hip fracture at follow-up (p = 0.029), after adjustment for age, 25OH-vitamin D and time. Conclusions: In post-menopausal women with T2DM, OPN might be a useful marker of fracture and worse lipid profile

An Approach to Assess the Impact of Tutorials in Video Games

    Get PDF
Video games are an established medium that provides interactive entertainment beyond pure enjoyment in many contexts. Game designers create dedicated tutorials to teach players the game mechanisms and rules, such as the conventions for interaction, control schemes, core game mechanics, etc. While effective tutorial design is considered a crucial aspect to support this learning process, the existing literature approaches focus on designing ad hoc tutorials for specific game genres rather than investigating the impact of different tutorial styles on game learnability and player engagement. In this paper, we tackle this challenge by presenting a general-purpose approach aimed at supporting game designers in the identification of the most suitable tutorial style for a specific genre of video games. The approach is evaluated in the context of a simple first-person shooter (FPS) mainstream video game built by the authors through a controlled comparative user experiment involving 46 players
