Geomorphic Characteristics and Sediment Transport in Natural and Channelized Reaches of Big Barren Creek, Southeast Missouri

    Get PDF
Channelization, levee construction, and gravel mining are land management practices that are used for flood control. However, they often alter the balance between sediment supply and available sediment transporting power in streams, causing channel instability. Streams can respond to instability through channel incision and sediment aggradation which can degrade riparian habitat, increase flood risks, and cause property damage. These problems have been observed along segments of Big Barren Creek, which drains 190 km² of the Missouri Ozarks in Mark Twain National Forest. Field assessment and modeling methods were used to evaluate the spatial distribution of channel instability along the upper 20 kilometers of Big Barren Creek and quantify the changes in channel morphology, hydrology, and sediment transport capacity related to channel modifications. Results show that channelized reaches of Big Barren Creek are generally steeper, up to two times deeper, and can transport up to four times more sediment than nearby natural reaches. High sediment transport capacity given unchanged sediment supply can account for headcuts, bed coarsening, and downstream sediment aggradation that are associated with channelized reaches of Big Barren Creek. These findings identify channelization as the primary contributor to channel instability within Big Barren Creek. Restoration efforts should focus on development plans to mitigate channelization and enhance channel recovery

A natural formation scenario for misaligned and short-period eccentric extrasolar planets

    Get PDF
Recent discoveries of strongly misaligned transiting exoplanets pose a challenge to the established planet formation theory which assumes planetary systems to form and evolve in isolation. However, the fact that the majority of stars actually do form in star clusters raises the question how isolated forming planetary systems really are. Besides radiative and tidal forces the presence of dense gas aggregates in star-forming regions are potential sources for perturbations to protoplanetary discs or systems. Here we show that subsequent capture of gas from large extended accretion envelopes onto a passing star with a typical circumstellar disc can tilt the disc plane to retrograde orientation, naturally explaining the formation of strongly inclined planetary systems. Furthermore, the inner disc regions may become denser, and thus more prone to speedy coagulation and planet formation. Pre-existing planetary systems are compressed by gas inflows leading to a natural occurrence of close-in misaligned hot Jupiters and short-period eccentric planets. The likelihood of such events mainly depends on the gas content of the cluster and is thus expected to be highest in the youngest star clusters.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Temperature effects on the magnetization of quasi-one-dimensional Peierls distorted materials

It is shown that temperature acts to disrupt the magnetization of Peierls distorted quasi-one-dimensional materials (Q1DM). The mean-field finite temperature phase diagram for the field theory model employed is obtained by considering both homogeneous and inhomogeneous condensates. The tricritical points of the second order transition lines of the gap parameter and magnetization are explicitly calculated. It is also shown that in the absence of an external static magnetic field the magnetization is always zero, at any temperature. As expected, temperature does not induce any magnetization effect on Peierls distorted Q1DM.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

A BEMT model for a high solidity, hubless and ducted tidal stream turbine

5th Oxford Tidal Energy Workshop (OTE 2016), 21-22 March 2016, Oxford, UKA Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) model for ‘conventional’ 3 bladed designs of Tidal Stream Turbine (TST) is presented, with validations from scale model experiments carried out in a cavitation tunnel. Assumptions and limitations of the model are discussed in order to gauge potential use in assessing a high solidity, hubless and ducted TST design, which has been developed by OpenHydro. A number of adjustments to the model are considered, which are to be validated with fully blade resolved CFD studies and field data from a full scale device deployed at Paimpol-Bréhat, Brittany at the start of 2016 in collaboration with EDF.The Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE) is funded by the Energy Technology partnership and the RCUK Energy Programme (Grant number EP/J500847/1)

From non-degenerate conducting polymers to dense matter in the massive Gross-Neveu model

Using results from the theory of non-degenerate conducting polymers like cis-polyacetylene, we generalize our previous work on dense baryonic matter and the soliton crystal in the massless Gross-Neveu model to finite bare fermion mass. In the large N limit, the exact crystal ground state can be constructed analytically, in close analogy to the bipolaron lattice in polymers. These findings are contrasted to the standard scenario with homogeneous phases only and a first order phase transition at a critical chemical potential.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, revtex; v2: improved readability, following advice of PRD referee; accepted for publicatio

How to get from imaginary to real chemical potential

    Get PDF
Using the exactly solvable Gross-Neveu model as theoretical laboratory, we analyse in detail the relationship between a relativistic quantum field theory at real and imaginary chemical potential. We find that one can retrieve the full information about the phase diagram of the theory from an imaginary chemical potential calculation. The prerequisite is to evaluate and analytically continue the effective potential for the chiral order parameter, rather than thermodynamic observables or phase boundaries. In the case of an inhomogeneous phase, one needs to compute the full effective action, a functional of the space-dependent order parameter, at imaginary chemical potential.Comment: revtex, 9 pages, 10 figures; v2: add more references, modify concluding sectio

Software Requirements and Prototype Development of a Web Application for Quality Assurance (QA) in Radiation Therapy - a QAlender

    Get PDF
The implementation of a web based portal QA solution will lead to a high acceptance of the staff as the usage of commonly known standard software (e.g. web browser) allows intuitive handling. In the daily use a significant simplification of the workflow and Performance enhancement can be achieved by easy access to the check documents. As the data is now saved in a database it can easily be processed and long-term trends can be displayed. Therefore possible errors can be detected much easier and earlier. By the usage of time stamps and user authentication procedures and user responsibilities are comprehensibly documented. As the software is browser based, integration into an existing software Environment is not critical. As only technical QA data is processed, no further data security measures are necessary. A certification as a medical product is not required

Adapting Conventional Tools to Analyse Ducted and Open Centre Tidal Stream Turbines

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from EWTEC via the link in this record. This paper details a hydrodynamic model based on Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) developed to assess ’conventional’ 3-bladed tidal stream turbines (TSTs), adapted here to analyse an ’unconventional’ case of a ducted and open centre device. Validations against a more detailed coupled Reynolds averaged computational fluid dynamics (RANS-BEM) model shows excellent agreement, of within 2% up to the peak power condition, with associated computational times in the order of a few minutes on a single core. The paper demonstrates the application of hydrodynamic forces into a structural analysis tool, in order to assess blade stress distributions of a generic hubless turbine. Incorporation of parameters such as non-uniform inflows and blade weight forces are investigated, with their effects on stress profiles presented. Key findings include: i) the adapted BEMT model replicates the majority of turbine performance characteristics estimated through previous CFD assessments; ii) the proposed model reduces the computational effort by several orders of magnitude compared to the reference coupled CFD, making it suitable for engineering assessments iii) blade stress distribution profiles are quantified, detailing concentration zones and cyclic values for use in fatigue analyses. This work forms part of a greater project aimed to develop a suite of analytical tools to perform engineering assessments of bi-directional ducted TSTsThis research is carried out as part of the Industrial Doctoral centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE), funded by the Energy Technology partnership and the RCUK Energy programme (Grant number EP/J500847/1), in collaboration with EDF R&D

Using binary statistics in Taurus-Auriga to distinguish between brown dwarf formation processes

Whether BDs form as stars through gravitational collapse ("star-like") or BDs and some very low-mass stars constitute a separate population which form alongside stars comparable to the population of planets, e.g. through circumstellar disk ("peripheral") fragmentation, is one of the key questions of the star-formation problem. For young stars in Taurus-Auriga the binary fraction is large with little dependence on primary mass above ~0.2Msun, while for BDs it is <10%. We investigate a case in which BDs in Taurus formed dominantly through peripheral fragmentation. The decline of the binary frequency in the transition region between star-like and peripheral formation is modelled. A dynamical population synthesis model is employed in which stellar binary formation is universal. Peripheral objects form separately in circumstellar disks with a distinctive initial mass function (IMF), own orbital parameter distributions for binaries and a low binary fraction. A small amount of dynamical processing of the stellar component is accounted for as appropriate for the low-density Taurus-Auriga embedded clusters. The binary fraction declines strongly between the mass-limits for star-like and peripheral formation. The location of characteristic features and the steepness depend on these mass-limits. Such a trend might be unique to low density regions hosting dynamically unprocessed binary populations. The existence of a strong decline in the binary fraction -- primary mass diagram will become verifiable in future surveys on BD and VLMS binarity in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. It is a test of the (non-)continuity of star formation along the mass-scale, the separateness of the stellar and BD populations and the dominant formation channel for BDs and BD binaries in regions of low stellar density hosting dynamically unprocessed populations.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

A discontinuity in the low-mass initial mass function

The origin of brown dwarfs (BDs) is still an unsolved mystery. While the standard model describes the formation of BDs and stars in a similar way recent data on the multiplicity properties of stars and BDs show them to have different binary distribution functions. Here we show that proper treatment of these uncovers a discontinuity of the multiplicity-corrected mass distribution in the very-low-mass star (VLMS) and BD mass regime. A continuous IMF can be discarded with extremely high confidence. This suggests that VLMSs and BDs on the one hand, and stars on the other, are two correlated but disjoint populations with different dynamical histories. The analysis presented here suggests that about one BD forms per five stars and that the BD-star binary fraction is about 2%-3% among stellar systems.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, uses emulateapj.cls.
