    Understanding the structure and reactivity of NiCu nanoparticles: An atomistic model

    The structure of bimetallic NiCu nanoparticles (NP) is investigated as a function of their composition and size by means of Lattice MonteCarlo (LMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. According to our results, copper segregation takes place at any composition of the particles. We found that this feature is not size-dependent. In contrast, nickel segregation depends on the NP size. When the size increases, Ni atoms tend to remain in the vicinity of the surface and deeper. For smaller NPs, Ni atoms are located at the surface as well. Our results also showed that most of the metal atoms segregated at the surface area were found to decorate edges and/or form islands. Our findings agree qualitatively with the experimental data found in the literature. In addition, we comment on the reactivity of these nanoparticles.Fil: Quaino, Paola Monica.     Monovalent Ion Condensation at the Electrified Liquid/Liquid Interface

    X-ray reflectivity studies demonstrate the condensation of a monovalent ion at the electrified interface between electrolyte solutions of water and 1,2-dichloroethane. Predictions of the ion distributions by standard Poisson-Boltzmann (Gouy-Chapman) theory are inconsistent with these data at higher applied interfacial electric potentials. Calculations from a Poisson-Boltzmann equation that incorporates a non-monotonic ion-specific potential of mean force are in good agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Performance of the new SPS beam position orbit system (MOPOS)

    The orbit and trajectory measurement system COPOS of the CERN SPS accelerator has been in operation since the construction of the machine in 1976. Over the years the system has been slightly modified in order to follow the evolving demands of the machine, in particular for its operation as a p-pbar collider and, since 1991, for the acceleration of heavy ions. In 1995 the performance of the system was reviewed and the following shortcomings were identified: - lack of turn-by-turn position measurements due to the 1ms integration time of the voltage to frequency converters used for the analogue to digital conversion (to be compared with a revolution time of 23 ms), - ageing effects on the 200 MHz resonating input filters, which had over the years drifted out of tolerance. As a consequence the signal to noise ratio, the linearity and the absolute precision were affected, - the calibration system based on electromechanical relays had become very unreliable, such that frequent calibrations were no longer possible, - a remote diagnostic for the observation of timing signals relative to the beam signals was missing. For the above reasons a large-scale upgrade program was launched, the results of which are described in the following sections

    Electron Transport Properties of Single-Molecule-Bearing Multiple Redox Levels Studied by EC-STM/STS

    Multielectron systems as possible components of molecular electronics devices are attracting compelling experimental and theoretical interest. Here we studied by electrochemical scanning tunneling techniques (EC-STMicroscopy and EC-STSpectroscopy) the electron transport properties of a redox molecule endowed with two redox levels, namely, the hydroquinone/quinone (H2Q/Q) couple. By forming self-assembled monolayers on Au(111) of oligo-phenylene-vinylene (OPV) derivatized H2Q/Q moieties, we were able to explore the features of the tunneling current/overpotential relation in the EC-STS setup. The behavior of the tunneling current sheds light onto the mechanism of electron transport involving the redox levels of the H2Q/Q redox pair coupled to tip and substrate electrodes

    Adatom Fe(III) on the hematite surface: Observation of a key reactive surface species

    The reactivity of a mineral surface is determined by the variety and population of different types of surface sites (e.g., step, kink, adatom, and defect sites). The concept of "adsorbed nutrient" has been built into crystal growth theories, and many other studies of mineral surface reactivity appeal to ill-defined "active sites." Despite their theoretical importance, there has been little direct experimental or analytical investigation of the structure and properties of such species. Here, we use ex-situ and in-situ scanning tunneling microcopy (STM) combined with calculated images based on a resonant tunneling model to show that observed nonperiodic protrusions and depressions on the hematite (001) surface can be explained as Fe in an adsorbed or adatom state occupying sites different from those that result from simple termination of the bulk mineral. The number of such sites varies with sample preparation history, consistent with their removal from the surface in low pH solutions

    CLIC 2008 Parameters

    This note presents the CLIC parameter set as of beginning 2008 and describes the different subsystems,pointing out how the design of the different components is driven. This design emerged from an updated understanding of limitations for normal conducting accelerating structures, which led to a new optimised design for the CLIC 12 GHz accelerating structure. The structure parameters and improvements in other sub-systems have resulted in a major revision of the parameters. The overall layout and efficiencies for CLIC with this updated parameter-set are presented
