    CP Asymmetry in B_d --> phi K_S: Standard Model Pollution

    The difference in the time dependent CP asymmetries between the modes B−−>psiKSB --> psi K_S and B−−>phiKSB --> phi K_S is a clean signal for physics beyond the Standard Model. This interpretation could fail if there is a large enhancement of the matrix element of the b−−>uubarsb --> u ubar s operator between the BdB_d initial state and the phiKSphi K_S final state. We argue against this possibility and propose some experimental tests that could shed light on the situation.Comment: 9 pages, Revte

    Power in the Multinational Corporation in Industry Equilibrium

    Recent theories of the multinational corporation introduce the property rights model of the firm and examine whether to integrate our outsource firm activities locally or to a foreign country. This paper focus instead on the internal organization of the multinational corporation by examining the power allocation between headquarters and subsidiaries. We provide a framework to analyse the interaction between the decision to serve the local market by exporting or FDI, market acces and the optimal mode of organization of the multinational corporation. We find that subsidiary managers are given most autonomy in their decision how to run the firm at intermediate levels of local competition. We then provide comparative statics for changes in fixed FDI entry costs and trade costs, information technology, the number of local competitors, and in the size of the local market

    The energy flux into a fluidized granular medium at a vibrating wall

    We study the power input of a vibrating wall into a fluidized granular medium, using event driven simulations of a model granular system. The system consists of inelastic hard disks contained between a stationary and a vibrating elastic wall, in the absence of gravity. Two scaling relations for the power input are found, both involving the pressure. The transition between the two occurs when waves generated at the moving wall can propagate across the system. Choosing an appropriate waveform for the vibrating wall removes one of these scalings and renders the second very simple.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 7 postscript figure

    Newly qualified physical education teachers’ experiences of developing subject knowledge prior to, during and after a Postgraduate Certificate in Education course

    Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) inspections of secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) physical education courses in England between 1996 and 1998 (OFSTED, 1999) were critical of student teachers' subject knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of subject knowledge and influences on the development of that subject knowledge in a sample of three newly qualified teachers (NQTs) who had completed a PGCE physical education course in England. The research comprised semi-structured interviews and analysis of documentation. Among these three NQTs there were some similarities, but more differences in terms of the development of subject knowledge as well as different influences on the development of subject knowledge. These results suggest that teacher educators may need to be flexible in how they approach and support the development of student teachers' subject knowledge. Results also suggest that teacher educators should work more closely with colleagues teaching sports-related undergraduate degree courses to support the development of subject knowledge for those students who wish to progress to a PGCE physical education course

    Organization of Multinational Activities and Ownership Structure

    We develop a model in which multinational investors decide about the modes of organization, the locations of production, and the markets to be served. Foreign investments are driven by market-seeking and cost-reducing motives. We further assume that investors face costs of control that vary among sectors and increase in distance. The results show that (i) production intensive sectors are more likely to operate a foreign business independent of the investment motive, (ii) that distance may have a non-monotonous effect on the likelihood of horizontal investments, and (iii) that globalization, if understood as reducing distance, leads to more integration

    CP Violation in \tau ->\nu\pi K_S and D->\pi K_S: The Importance of K_S-K_L Interference

    The BB-factories have measured CP asymmetries in the τ→πKSν\tau\to\pi K_S\nu and D→KSπD\to K_S\pi modes. The KSK_S state is identified by its decay to two pions at a time that is close to the KSK_S lifetime. Within the Standard Model and many of its extensions, the asymmetries in these modes come from CP violation in K0−Kˉ0K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. We emphasize that the interference between the amplitudes of intermediate KSK_S and KLK_L is as important as the pure KSK_S amplitude. Consequently, the measured asymmetries depend on the times over which the relevant decay rates are integrated and on features of the experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Confined Harmonically Interacting Spin-Polarized Fermions in a Magnetic Field: Thermodynamics

    We investigate the combined influence of a magnetic field and a harmonic interparticle interaction on the thermodynamic properties of a finite number of spin polarized fermions in a confiment potential. This study is an extension using our path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles. The thermodynamical properties are calculated for a three dimensional model of N harmonically interacting spin polarized fermions in a parabolic potential well in the presence of a magnetic field. The free energy and the internal energy are obtained for a limited number of particles. Deviations from the thermodynamical limit become negligible for about 100 or more particles, but even for a smaller number of fermions present in the well, scaling relations similar to those of the continuum approximation to the density of states are already satisfied.Comment: 7 pages REVTEX and 8 postscript figures, accepted in Phys.
