A Combinatorial Interpretation of the Free Fermion Condition of the Six-Vertex Model
The free fermion condition of the six-vertex model provides a 5 parameter
sub-manifold on which the Bethe Ansatz equations for the wavenumbers that enter
into the eigenfunctions of the transfer matrices of the model decouple, hence
allowing explicit solutions. Such conditions arose originally in early
field-theoretic S-matrix approaches. Here we provide a combinatorial
explanation for the condition in terms of a generalised Gessel-Viennot
involution. By doing so we extend the use of the Gessel-Viennot theorem,
originally devised for non-intersecting walks only, to a special weighted type
of \emph{intersecting} walk, and hence express the partition function of
such walks starting and finishing at fixed endpoints in terms of the single
walk partition functions
A refined Razumov-Stroganov conjecture
We extend the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture relating the groundstate of the
O(1) spin chain to alternating sign matrices, by relating the groundstate of
the monodromy matrix of the O(1) model to the so-called refined alternating
sign matrices, i.e. with prescribed configuration of their first row, as well
as to refined fully-packed loop configurations on a square grid, keeping track
both of the loop connectivity and of the configuration of their top row. We
also conjecture a direct relation between this groundstate and refined totally
symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, namely, in their formulation as
sets of non-intersecting lattice paths, with prescribed last steps of all
paths.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, uses epsf and harvmac macros a few typos

Discrete integrable systems, positivity, and continued fraction rearrangements
In this review article, we present a unified approach to solving discrete,
integrable, possibly non-commutative, dynamical systems, including the - and
-systems based on . The initial data of the systems are seen as cluster
variables in a suitable cluster algebra, and may evolve by local mutations. We
show that the solutions are always expressed as Laurent polynomials of the
initial data with non-negative integer coefficients. This is done by
reformulating the mutations of initial data as local rearrangements of
continued fractions generating some particular solutions, that preserve
manifest positivity. We also show how these techniques apply as well to
non-commutative settings.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure
Q-systems, Heaps, Paths and Cluster Positivity
We consider the cluster algebra associated to the -system for as a
tool for relating -system solutions to all possible sets of initial data. We
show that the conserved quantities of the -system are partition functions
for hard particles on particular target graphs with weights, which are
determined by the choice of initial data. This allows us to interpret the
simplest solutions of the Q-system as generating functions for Viennot's heaps
on these target graphs, and equivalently as generating functions of weighted
paths on suitable dual target graphs. The generating functions take the form of
finite continued fractions. In this setting, the cluster mutations correspond
to local rearrangements of the fractions which leave their final value
unchanged. Finally, the general solutions of the -system are interpreted as
partition functions for strongly non-intersecting families of lattice paths on
target lattices. This expresses all cluster variables as manifestly positive
Laurent polynomials of any initial data, thus proving the cluster positivity
conjecture for the -system. We also give an alternative formulation in
terms of domino tilings of deformed Aztec diamonds with defects.Comment: 106 pages, 38 figure

Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers
We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang–Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u^(n)k -WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov’s toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov–Witten invariants. We reveal an underlying quantum group structure in terms of Yang–Baxter algebras and use it to give a generating formula for toric Schur functions in terms of divided difference operators which appear in known representations of the nil-Hecke algebra
Central factorials under the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform of polynomials
We show that slight modifications of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform lead
to an automorphism of the vector space of polynomials. This circumstance along
with the Mellin transformation property of the modified Bessel functions
perform the passage of monomials to central factorial polynomials. A special
attention is driven to the polynomial sequences whose KL-transform is the
canonical sequence, which will be fully characterized. Finally, new identities
between the central factorials and the Euler polynomials are found.Comment: also available at http://cmup.fc.up.pt/cmup/ since the 2nd August

Scaling limit of vicious walks and two-matrix model
We consider the diffusion scaling limit of the one-dimensional vicious walker
model of Fisher and derive a system of nonintersecting Brownian motions. The
spatial distribution of particles is studied and it is described by use of
the probability density function of eigenvalues of Gaussian random
matrices. The particle distribution depends on the ratio of the observation
time and the time interval in which the nonintersecting condition is
imposed. As is going on from 0 to 1, there occurs a transition of
distribution, which is identified with the transition observed in the
two-matrix model of Pandey and Mehta. Despite of the absence of matrix
structure in the original vicious walker model, in the diffusion scaling limit,
accumulation of contact repulsive interactions realizes the correlated
distribution of eigenvalues in the multimatrix model as the particle
distribution.Comment: REVTeX4, 12 pages, no figure, minor corrections made for publicatio
Enumeration of simple random walks and tridiagonal matrices
We present some old and new results in the enumeration of random walks in one
dimension, mostly developed in works of enumerative combinatorics. The relation
between the trace of the -th power of a tridiagonal matrix and the
enumeration of weighted paths of steps allows an easier combinatorial
enumeration of the paths. It also seems promising for the theory of tridiagonal
random matrices .Comment: several ref.and comments added, misprints correcte
