Comparison of a quasi-3D analysis and experimental performance for three compact radial turbines
An experimental aerodynamic evaluation of three compact radial turbine builds was performed. Two rotors which were 40 to 50 percent shorter in axial length than conventional state of the art radial rotors were tested. A single nozzle design was used. One rotor was tested with the nozzle at two stagger angle settings. A second rotor was tested with the nozzle in only the closed down setting. Experimental results were compared to predict results from a quasi-3D inviscid and boundary layer analysis, called Meridl/Tsonic/Blayer (MTSB). This analysis was used to predict turbine performance. It has previously been calibrated only for axial, not radial, turbomachinery. The predicted and measured efficiencies were compared at the design point for the three turbines. At the design points the analysis overpredicted the efficiency by less than 1.7 points. Comparisons were also made at off-design operating points. The results of these comparisons showed the importance of an accurate clearance model for efficiency predictions and also that there are deficiencies in the incidence loss model used
Effects of husbandry and low-dose lipopolysaccharide challenge on the acute phase response of young pigs
End of project reportIn recent years, concern has grown for the welfare of domesticated animals in different production systems (Appleby and Hughes, 1997). Poor welfare can result in poor performance and productivity. However, the consumers are also requesting more welfare-friendly systems, as reflected by the importance that ‘organic’ and ‘free-range’ products have gained in our markets. Furthermore, there are ethical reasons for safeguarding the welfare of animals in our care. Thus, it is scientists’ task to be able to develop methods and techniques that can help to assess the welfare objectively. Traditionally, welfare assessment relied on the study of behaviour and the measurement of endocrine parameters. Acute phase response mediators and products, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins, emerged recently as potential indicators of infection and herd health status (Eckersall, 2000; Petersen et al., 2004). Thus, investigating the effects of husbandry and low-dose lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge on the acute phase response of young pigs can give valuable information on the use of these immune parameters as health and welfare indicators in pigs.Teagasc acknowledges the support of National Development Programme Funds (NDP) in the financing of this research projec
Probing 3-D matter distribution at z~2 with QSO multiple lines of sight
We investigate the 3-D matter distribution at z~2 with high resolution (R ~
40000) spectra of QSO pairs and groups obtained with the UVES spectrograph at
ESO VLT. Our sample is unique for the number density of objects and the variety
of separations, between 0.5 and 7 proper Mpc. We compute the real space
cross-correlation function of the Lyman-alpha forest transmitted fluxes. There
is a significant clustering signal up to ~2 proper Mpc, which is still present
when absorption lines with high column density (log N > 13.8) are excluded.Comment: Poster paper presented at the IAU Colloquium #199 on "Probing

QSO clustering and the AAT 2dF redshift survey
We review previous results on the clustering and environments of QSOs. We
show that the correlation length for QSOs derived from existing surveys is
r~5/h Mpc, similar to the observed correlation length for field galaxies at the
present epoch. The galaxy environment for z<1 radio-quiet QSOs is also
consistent with field galaxies. The evolution of the QSO correlation length
with redshift is currently uncertain, largely due to the small numbers of QSOs
(~2000) in surveys suitable for clustering analysis. We report on intial
progress with the AAT 2dF QSO redshift survey, which, once completed will
comprise almost 30000 QSOs. With over 1000 QSOs already observed, it is already
the largest single homogeneous QSO survey. We discuss prospects for deriving
limits on cosmological parameters from this survey, and on the evolution of

Registration of retinal images from Public Health by minimising an error between vessels using an affine model with radial distortions
In order to estimate a registration model of eye fundus images made of an
affinity and two radial distortions, we introduce an estimation criterion based
on an error between the vessels. In [1], we estimated this model by minimising
the error between characteristics points. In this paper, the detected vessels
are selected using the circle and ellipse equations of the overlap area
boundaries deduced from our model. Our method successfully registers 96 % of
the 271 pairs in a Public Health dataset acquired mostly with different
cameras. This is better than our previous method [1] and better than three
other state-of-the-art methods. On a publicly available dataset, ours still
better register the images than the reference method
Hadronic contribution to the muon g-2: a theoretical determination
The leading order hadronic contribution to the muon g-2, , is
determined entirely from theory using an approach based on Cauchy's theorem in
the complex squared energy s-plane. This is possible after fitting the
integration kernel in with a simpler function of . The
integral determining in the light-quark region is then split
into a low energy and a high energy part, the latter given by perturbative QCD
(PQCD). The low energy integral involving the fit function to the integration
kernel is determined by derivatives of the vector correlator at the origin,
plus a contour integral around a circle calculable in PQCD. These derivatives
are calculated using hadronic models in the light-quark sector. A similar
procedure is used in the heavy-quark sector, except that now everything is
calculable in PQCD, thus becoming the first entirely theoretical calculation of
this contribution. Using the dual resonance model realization of Large
QCD to compute the derivatives of the correlator leads to agreement with the
experimental value of . Accuracy, though, is currently limited by the
model dependent calculation of derivatives of the vector correlator at the
origin. Future improvements should come from more accurate chiral perturbation
theory and/or lattice QCD information on these derivatives, allowing for this
method to be used to determine accurately entirely from theory,
independently of any hadronic model.Comment: Several additional clarifying paragraphs have been added. 1/N_c

Tomography of the intergalactic medium with Ly-alpha forests in close QSO pairs
We study the three-dimensional distribution of non virialised matter at z~2
using high resolution spectra of QSO pairs and simulated spectra drawn from
cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We have collected the largest sample
of QSO pairs ever observed with UVES at the ESO-VLT, with angular separations
between ~1 and 14 arcmin. The observed correlation functions of the transmitted
flux in the HI Lyman alpha forest along and transverse to the lines of sight
are in good agreement implying that the distortions in redshift space due to
peculiar velocities are small. The clustering signal is significant up to
velocity separations of ~200 km/s, or about 3 h^{-1} comoving Mpc. The regions
at lower overdensity (rho/ < 6.5) are still clustered but on smaller
scales (Delta v < 100 km/s). The observed and simulated correlation functions
are compatible at the 3 sigma level. A better concordance is obtained when only
the low overdensity regions are selected for the analysis or when the effective
optical depth of the simulated spectra is increased artificially, suggesting a
deficiency of strong lines in the simulated spectra. We found that also a lower
value of the power-law index of the temperature-density relation for the Lyman
alpha forest gas improves the agreement between observed and simulated results.
If confirmed, this would be consistent with other observations favouring a late
HeII reionization epoch (at z~3). We remark the detection of a significant
clustering signal in the cross correlation coefficient at a transverse velocity
separation Delta v_{\perp} ~500 km/s whose origin needs further investigation.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, revised version matching the

Clustering in the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey
We present clustering results from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) which
currently contains over 20,000 QSOs at z<3. The two-point correlation function
of QSOs averaged over the entire survey (~1.5) is found to be similar to
that of local galaxies. When sub-dividing the sample as a function of redshift,
we find that for an Einstein-de Sitter universe QSO clustering is constant (in
comoving coordinates) over the entire redshift range probed by the 2QZ, while
in a universe with Omega_0=0.3 and Lambda_0=0.7 there is a marginal increase in
clustering with redshift. Sub-dividing the 2QZ on the basis of apparent
magnitude we find only a slight difference between the clustering of QSOs of
different apparent brightness, with the brightest QSOs having marginally
stronger clustering. We have made a first measurement of the redshift space
distortion of QSO clustering, with the goal of determining the value of
cosmological parameters (in partcular Lambda_0) from geometric distortions. The
current data do not allow us to discriminate between models, however, in
combination with constraints from the evolution of mass clustering we find
Omega_0=1-Lambda_0=0.23 +0.44-0.13 and beta(z~1.4)=0.39 +0.18-0.17. The full
