Dysregulation of Iron Metabolism in Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Dysregulation of iron metabolism has been observed in patients with neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). Utilization of several importers and exporters for iron transport in brain cells helps maintain iron homeostasis. Dysregulation of iron homeostasis leads to the production of neurotoxic substances and reactive oxygen species, resulting in iron-induced oxidative stress. In Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), circumstantial evidence has shown that dysregulation of brain iron homeostasis leads to abnormal iron accumulation. Several genetic studies have revealed mutations in genes associated with increased iron uptake, increased oxidative stress, and an altered inflammatory response in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here, we review the recent findings on brain iron metabolism in common NDs, such as AD, PD, and ALS. We also summarize the conventional and novel types of iron chelators, which can successfully decrease excess iron accumulation in brain lesions. For example, iron-chelating drugs have neuroprotective effects, preventing neural apoptosis, and activate cellular protective pathways against oxidative stress. Glial cells also protect neurons by secreting antioxidants and antiapoptotic substances. These new findings of experimental and clinical studies may provide a scientific foundation for advances in drug development for NDs

Business models and supply chains for the circular economy
The Circular Economy is increasingly seen as a possible solution to address sustainable development. An economic system that minimises resource input into and waste, emission, and energy leakage out of the system is hoped to mitigate negative impacts without jeopardising growth and prosperity. This paper discusses the sustainability performance of the circular business models (CBM) and circular supply chains necessary to implement the concept on an organisational level and proposes a framework to integrate circular business models and circular supply chain management towards sustainable development. It was developed based on literature analysis and four case studies. The proposed framework shows how different circular business models are driving circular supply chain in different loops: closing loops, slowing loops, intensifying loops, narrowing loops, and dematerialising loops. The identified circular business models vary in complexity of the circular supply chain and in the value proposition. Our research indicates circular business and circular supply chain help in realising sustainability ambitions. This work was supported by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Industrial Sustainability [grant number EP/I033351/1
On the Brightness and Waiting-time Distributions of a Type III Radio Storm observed by STEREO/WAVES
Type III solar radio storms, observed at frequencies below approximately 16
MHz by space borne radio experiments, correspond to the quasi-continuous,
bursty emission of electron beams onto open field lines above active regions.
The mechanisms by which a storm can persist in some cases for more than a solar
rotation whilst exhibiting considerable radio activity are poorly understood.
To address this issue, the statistical properties of a type III storm observed
by the STEREO/WAVES radio experiment are presented, examining both the
brightness distribution and (for the first time) the waiting-time distribution.
Single power law behavior is observed in the number distribution as a function
of brightness; the power law index is approximately 2.1 and is largely
independent of frequency. The waiting-time distribution is found to be
consistent with a piecewise-constant Poisson process. This indicates that
during the storm individual type III bursts occur independently and suggests
that the storm dynamics are consistent with avalanche type behavior in the
underlying active region.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in

Geometrical and band-structure effects on phonon-limited hole mobility in rectangular cross-sectional germanium nanowires
We calculated the phonon-limited hole mobility in rectangular cross-sectional [001], [110], [111], and [112]-oriented germanium nanowires, and the hole transport characteristics were investigated. A tight-binding approximation was used for holes, and phonons were described by a valence force field model. Then, scattering probability of holes by phonons was calculated taking account of hole-phonon interaction atomistically, and the linearized Boltzmann's transport equation was solved to calculate the hole mobility at low longitudinal field. The dependence of the hole mobility on nanowire geometry was analyzed in terms of the valence band structure of germanium nanowires, and it was found that the dependence was qualitatively reproduced by considering an average effective mass and the density of states of holes. The calculation revealed that [110] germanium nanowires with large height along the [001] direction show high hole mobility. Germanium nanowires with this geometry are also expected to exhibit high electron mobility in our previous work, and thus they are promising for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) applications
New Supporting Evidence for the Overdensity of Galaxies around the Radio-Loud Quasar SDSS J0836+0054 at z =5.8
Recently, Zheng et al. (2005) found evidence for an overdensity of galaxies
around a radio-loud quasar, SDSS J0836+0054, at z=5.8 (a five arcmin
region). We have examined our deep optical imaging data (B, V, r', i', z', and
NB816) taken with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. The NB816
narrow-band filter (lambda_c = 815 nm and nm) is suitable
for searching for Ly emitters at . We have found a new
strong Ly emitter at close to object B identified by
Zheng et al. Further, the non detection of the nine objects selected by Zheng
et al. (2005) in our B, V, and r' images provides supporting evidence that they
are high-z objects.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for PAS
Strong Emission-Line Galaxies at Low Redshift in the Field around the Quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2
We discuss observational properties of strong emission-line galaxies at low
redshift found by our deep imaging survey for high-redshift Ly alpha emitters.
In our surveys, we used the narrowband filter, NB816 (lambda_center=8150A with
FWHM = 120A), and the intermediate-band filter, IA827 (lambda_center = 8270A
with FWHM = 340A). In this survey, 62 NB816-excess (> 0.9 mag) and 21
IA827-excess (> 0.8 mag) objects were found. Among them, we found 20
NB816-excess and 4 IA827-excess Ly alpha emitter candidates. Therefore, it
turns out that 42 NB816-excess and 17 IA827-excess objects are strong
emission-line objects at lower redshift. Since 4 objects in the two low-z
samples are common, the total number of strong low-z emitters is 55. Applying
our photometric redshift technique, we identify 7 H alpha emitters at z~0.24,
20 H beta-[OIII] ones at z~0.65, and 11 [OII] ones at z~1.19. However, we
cannot determine reliable photometric redshifts of the remaining 17 emitters.
The distributions of their rest frame equivalent widths are consistently
understood with recent studies of galaxy evolution from z~1 to z~0.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, PASJ, Vol. 58, No. 1, in pres
Parity nonconserving observables in thermal neutron capture on a proton
We calculate parity nonconserving observables in the processes where a
neutron is captured on a proton at the threshold energy radiating a photon.
Various potential models such as Paris, Bonn and Argonne are used for the
strong interactions, and the meson-exchange description is employed for the
weak interactions between hadrons. The photon polarization in the
unpolarized neutron capture process and photon asymmetry in the
polarized neutron capture process are obtained in terms of the weak
meson-nucleon coupling constants. turns out to be basically
insensitive to the employed strong interaction models and thus can be uniquely
determined in terms of the weak coupling constants, but depends
significantly on the strong interaction models.Comment: 13 pages, 11 eps figure
