Moments of Wigner function and Renyi entropies at freeze-out

Relation between Renyi entropies and moments of the Wigner function, representing the quantum mechanical description of the M-particle semi-inclusive distribution at freeze-out, is investigated. It is shown that in the limit of infinite volume of the system, the classical and quantum descriptions are equivalent. Finite volume corrections are derived and shown to be small for systems encountered in relativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 15 pages, one figur

Four-photon interference: a realizable experiment to demonstrate violation of EPR postulates for perfect correlations

Bell's theorem reveals contradictions between the predictions of quantum mechanics and the EPR postulates for a pair of particles only in situations involving imperfect statistical correlations. However, with three or more particles, contradictions emerge even for perfect correlations. We describe an experiment which can be realized in the laboratory, using four-photon entangled states generated by parametric down-conversion, to demonstrate this contradiction at the level of perfect correlations.Comment: publishe

Intracellular zinc depletion induces caspase activation and p21Waf1/Cip1 cleavage in human epithelial cell lines

To better understand the mechanisms by which zinc deficiency induces epithelial cell death, studies were done of the effects of intracellular zinc depletion induced by the zinc chelator TPEN on apoptosis-related events in human malignant epithelial cell lines LIM1215 (colonic), NCI-H292 (bronchial), and A549 (alveolar type II). In TPEN-treated cells, depletion of zinc was followed by activation of caspase-3 (as demonstrated by enzymatic assay and Western blotting), DNA fragmentation, and morphologic changes. Increase in caspase-3 activity began 1–2 h after addition of TPEN, suggesting that zinc may suppress a step just before the activation of this caspase. Caspase-6, a mediator of caspase-3 processing, also increased, but later than caspase-3. Effects of TPEN on apoptosis were completely prevented by exogenous ZnSO4 and partially prevented by peptide caspase inhibitors. A critical substrate of caspase-3 may be the cell cycle regulator p21Waf1/Cip1, which was rapidly cleaved in TPEN-treated cells to a 15-kDa fragment before further degradation.F. Chai, A. Q. BrowserAudit: Automated testing of browser security features

    No full text
The security of the client side of a web application relies on browser features such as cookies, the same-origin policy and HTTPS. As the client side grows increasingly powerful and sophisticated, browser vendors have stepped up their offering of security mechanisms which can be leveraged to protect it. These are often introduced experimentally and informally and, as adoption increases, gradually become standardised (e.g., CSP, CORS and HSTS). Considering the diverse landscape of browser vendors, releases, and customised versions for mobile and embedded devices, there is a compelling need for a systematic assessment of browser security. We present BrowserAudit, a tool for testing that a deployed browser enforces the guarantees implied by the main standardised and experimental security mechanisms. It includes more than 400 fully-automated tests that exercise a broad range of security features, helping web users, application developers and security researchers to make an informed security assessment of a deployed browser. We validate BrowserAudit by discovering both fresh and known security-related bugs in major browsers. Copyright is held by the owner/author(s)

Some forgotten features of the Bose Einstein Correlations

Notwithstanding the visible maturity of the subject of Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC), as witnessed nowadays, we would like to bring to ones attention two points, which apparently did not received attention they deserve: the problem of the choice of the form of C2(Q)C_2(Q) correlation function when effects of partial coherence of the hadronizing source are to be included and the feasibility to model effects of Bose-Einstein statistics, in particular the BEC, by direct numerical simulations.Comment: Talk delivered by G.Wilk at the International Workshop {\it Relativistic Nuclear Physics: from Nuclotron to LHC energies}, Kiev, June 18-22, 2007, Ukraine; misprints correcte

Upwelling events, coastal offshore exchange, links to biogeochemical processes - Highlights from the Baltic Sea Sciences Congress at Rostock University, Germany, 19-22 March 2007

The Baltic Sea Science Congress was held at Rostock University, Germany, from 19 to 22 March 2007. In the session entitled"Upwelling events, coastal offshore exchange, links to biogeochemical processes" 20 presentations were given, including 7 talks and 13 posters related to the theme of the session. This paper summarises new findings of the upwelling-related studies reported in the session. It deals with investigationsbased on the use of in situ and remote sensing measurements as well as numerical modelling tools. The biogeochemicalimplications of upwelling are also discussed. Our knowledge of the fine structure and dynamic considerations of upwelling has increased in recent decades with the advent ofhigh-resolution modern measurement techniques and modelling studies. The forcing and the overall structure, duration and intensity ofupwelling events are understood quite well. However, the quantification of related transports and the contribution to the overall mixingof upwelling requires further research. Furthermore, our knowledge of the links between upwelling and biogeochemical processes is stillincomplete. Numerical modelling has advanced to the extent that horizontal resolutions of c. 0.5 nautical miles can now be applied, which allows the complete spectrum of meso-scale features to be described. Even the development of filaments can be describedrealistically in comparison with high-resolution satellite data. But the effect of upwelling at a basin scale and possible changes under changing climatic conditions remain open questions

Semi-leptonic B decays into higher charmed resonances

We apply HQET to semi-leptonic BB meson decays into a variety of excited charm states. Using three realistic meson models with fermionic light degrees of freedom, we examine the extent that the sum of exclusive single charmed states account for the inclusive semi-leptonic BB decay rate. The consistency of form factors with the Bjorken and Voloshin sum rules is also investigated.Comment: Latex, 27 pages. A few references and errors corrected, to appear in Phys. Rev.
