Goldstone Gauginos
Models of supersymmetry with Dirac gauginos provide an attractive scenario
for physics beyond the standard model. The "supersoft" radiative corrections
and suppressed SUSY production at colliders provide for more natural theories
and an understanding of why no new states have been seen. Unfortunately, these
models are handicapped by a tachyon which is naturally present in existing
models of Dirac gauginos. We argue that this tachyon is absent, with the
phenomenological successes of the model preserved, if the right handed gaugino
is a (pseudo-)Goldstone field of a spontaneously broken anomalous flavor
symmetry.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. v2: minor changes to text, references added and

Models of Goldstone Gauginos
Models with Dirac gauginos provide appealing scenarios for physics beyond the
standard model. They have smaller radiative corrections to the Higgs mass, a
suppression of certain SUSY production processes, and ameliorated flavor
constraints. Unfortunately, they also generally have tachyons, the solutions to
which typically spoil these positive features. The recently proposed "Goldstone
Gaugino" mechanism provides a simple solution that eliminates these tachyonic
states. We provide details on this mechanism and explore models for its origin.
In particular, we find SUSY QCD models that realize this idea simply, and
discuss scenarios for unification.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure
Artificial neural network prediction of weld distortion rectification using a travelling induction coil
An experimental investigation has been carried out to determine the applicability of an induction heating process with a travelling induction coil for the rectification of angular welding distortion. The results obtained from experimentation have been used to create artificial neural network models with the ability to predict the welding induced distortion and the distortion rectification achieved using a travelling induction coil. The experimental results have shown the ability to reduce the angular distortion for 8 mm and 10 mm thick DH36 steel plate and effectively eliminate the distortion on 6 mm thick plate. Results for 6 mm plate also show the existence of a critical induction coil travel speed at which maximum corrective bending occurs. Artificial neural networks have demonstrated the ability to predict the final distortion of the plate after both welding and induction heating. The models have also been used as a tool to determine the optimum speed to minimise the resulting distortion of steel plate after being subjected to both welding and induction heating processes
Non-Existence of Black Holes in Certain Spacetimes
Assuming certain asymptotic conditions, we prove a general theorem on the
non-existence of static regular (i.e., nondegenerate) black holes in spacetimes
with a negative cosmological constant, given that the fundamental group of
space is infinite. We use this to rule out the existence of regular negative
mass AdS black holes with Ricci flat scri. For any mass, we also rule out a
class of conformally compactifiable static black holes whose conformal infinity
has positive scalar curvature and infinite fundamental group, subject to our
asymptotic conditions. In a limited, but important, special case our result
adds new support to the AdS/CFT inspired positive mass conjecture of Horowitz
and Myers.Comment: 17 pages, Latex. Typos corrected, minor changes to the text. Accepted

On the Gannon-Lee Singularity Theorem in Higher Dimensions
The Gannon-Lee singularity theorems give well-known restrictions on the
spatial topology of singularity-free (i.e., nonspacelike geodesically
complete), globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this paper, we revisit these
classic results in the light of recent developments, especially the failure in
higher dimensions of a celebrated theorem by Hawking on the topology of black
hole horizons. The global hyperbolicity requirement is weakened, and we expand
the scope of the main results to allow for the richer variety of spatial
topologies which are likely to occur in higher-dimensional spacetimes.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Uniqueness of de Sitter space
All inextendible null geodesics in four dimensional de Sitter space dS^4 are
complete and globally achronal. This achronality is related to the fact that
all observer horizons in dS^4 are eternal, i.e. extend from future infinity
scri^+ all the way back to past infinity scri^-. We show that the property of
having a null line (inextendible achronal null geodesic) that extends from
scri^- to scri^+ characterizes dS^4 among all globally hyperbolic and
asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations
with positive cosmological constant. This result is then further extended to
allow for a class of matter models that includes perfect fluids.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure
An X-Ray Jet from a White Dwarf - Detection of the Collimated Outflow from CH Cygni with Chandra
Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the
wind of a red giant. An increasing number of these objects have been found to
produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH
Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical
and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains
only the second known white dwarf with an X-ray jet, after R Aquarii. The
X-rays from symbiotic-star jets appear to be produced when jet material is
shock-heated following collision with surrounding gas, as with the outflows
from some protostellar objects and bipolar planetary nebulae.Comment: 4 & a bit pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJL; uses emulateapj.cls and

Techno-economic evaluation of reducing shielding gas consumption in GMAW whilst maintaining weld quality
A new method of supplying shielding gases in an alternating manner has been developed to enhance the efficiency of conventional gas metal arc welding (GMAW). However, the available literature on this advanced joining process is very sparse and no cost evaluation has been reported to date. In simple terms, the new method involves discretely supplying two different shielding gases to the weld pool at predetermined frequencies which creates a dynamic action within the liquid pool. In order to assess the potential benefits of this new method from a technical and cost perspective, a comparison has been drawn between the standard shielding gas composition of Ar/20%CO2, which is commonly used in UK and European shipbuilding industries for carbon steels, and a range of four different frequencies alternating between Ar/20%CO2 and helium. The beneficial effects of supplying the weld shielding gases in an alternating manner were found to provide attractive benefits for the manufacturing community. For example, the present study showed that compared with conventional GMAW, a 17 per cent reduction in total welding cost was achieved in the case of the alternating gas method and savings associated with a reduction in the extent of post-weld straightening following plate distortion were also identified. Also, the mechanical properties of the alternating case highlighted some marginal improvements in strength and Charpy impact toughness which were attributed to a more refined weld microstructure
Nonexistence of marginally trapped surfaces and geons in 2+1 gravity
We use existence results for Jang's equation and marginally outer trapped
surfaces (MOTSs) in 2+1 gravity to obtain nonexistence of geons in 2+1 gravity.
In particular, our results show that any 2+1 initial data set, which obeys the
dominant energy condition with cosmological constant \Lambda \geq 0 and which
satisfies a mild asymptotic condition, must have trivial topology. Moreover,
any data set obeying these conditions cannot contain a MOTS. The asymptotic
condition involves a cutoff at a finite boundary at which a null mean convexity
condition is assumed to hold; this null mean convexity condition is satisfied
by all the standard asymptotic boundary conditions. The results presented here
strengthen various aspects of previous related results in the literature. These
results not only have implications for classical 2+1 gravity but also apply to
quantum 2+1 gravity when formulated using Witten's solution space quantization.Comment: v3: Elements from the original two proofs of the main result have
been combined to give a single proof, thereby circumventing an issue with the
second proof associated with potential blow-ups of solutions to Jang's
equation. To appear in Commun. Math. Phy
