Depinning and dynamics of AC driven vortex lattices in random media
We study the different dynamical regimes of a vortex lattice driven by AC
forces in the presence of random pinning via numerical simulations. The
behaviour of the different observables is charaterized as a function of the
applied force amplitude for different frequencies. We discuss the
inconveniences of using the mean velocity to identify the depinnig transition
and we show that instead, the mean quadratic displacement of the lattice is the
relevant magnitude to characterize different AC regimes. We discuss how the
results depend on the initial configuration and we identify new hysteretic
effects which are absent in the DC driven systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Temporal Correlations and Persistence in the Kinetic Ising Model: the Role of Temperature
We study the statistical properties of the sum , that is the difference of time spent positive or negative by the
spin , located at a given site of a -dimensional Ising model
evolving under Glauber dynamics from a random initial configuration. We
investigate the distribution of and the first-passage statistics
(persistence) of this quantity. We discuss successively the three regimes of
high temperature (), criticality (), and low temperature
(). We discuss in particular the question of the temperature
dependence of the persistence exponent , as well as that of the
spectrum of exponents , in the low temperature phase. The
probability that the temporal mean was always larger than the
equilibrium magnetization is found to decay as . This
yields a numerical determination of the persistence exponent in the
whole low temperature phase, in two dimensions, and above the roughening
transition, in the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional Ising model.Comment: 21 pages, 11 PostScript figures included (1 color figure
3D APIs in Interactive Real-Time Systems: Comparison of OpenGL, Direct3D and Java3D.
Since the first display of a few computer-generated lines on a Cathode-ray tube (CRT) over 40 years ago, graphics has progressed rapidly towards the computer generation of detailed images and interactive environments in real time (Angel, 1997). In the last twenty years a number of Application Programmer's Interfaces (APIs) have been developed to provide access to three-dimensional graphics systems. Currently, there are numerous APIs used for many different types of applications. This paper will look at three of these: OpenGL, Direct3D, and one of the newest entrants, Java3D. They will be discussed in relation to their level of versatility, programability, and how innovative they are in introducing new features and furthering the development of 3D-interactive programming
Crystal Structure of the ZrO Phase at Zirconium/Zirconium Oxide Interfaces
Zirconium-based alloys are used in water-cooled nuclear reactors for both nuclear fuel cladding and structural components. Under this harsh environment, the main factor limiting the service life of zirconium cladding, and hence fuel burn-up efficiency, is water corrosion. This oxidation process has recently been linked to the presence of a sub-oxide phase with well-defined composition but unknown structure at the metal–oxide interface. In this paper, the combination of first-principles materials modeling and high-resolution electron microscopy is used to identify the structure of this sub-oxide phase, bringing us a step closer to developing strategies to mitigate aqueous oxidation in Zr alloys and prolong the operational lifetime of commercial fuel cladding alloys
Individual grain boundary properties and overall performance of metal-organic deposition coated conductors
have investigated single grain boundaries (GBs) isolated in coated
conductors produced by metal-organic deposition. When a magnetic field is swept in the film plane, an angle-dependent crossover from boundary to grain limited critical current density J(c) is found. In the
force-free orientation, even at fields as high as 8 T, the GBs still limit Jc. We deduce that this effect is a direct consequence of GB meandering. We have employed these single GB results to explain the dependence of Jc of polycrystalline tracks on their width: in-plane measurements become flatter as the tracks are narrowed down. This result is consistent with the stronger GB limitation at field configurations close to force-free found from the isolated boundaries. Our study shows that for certain geometries even at high fields the effect of GBs cannot be neglected. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council [grant numbers EP/C011546/1 and EP/C011554/1
A semantic interoperability approach to support integration of gene expression and clinical data in breast cancer
[Abstract] Introduction. The introduction of omics data and advances in technologies involved in clinical treatment has led to a broad range of approaches to represent clinical information. Within this context, patient stratification across health institutions due to omic profiling presents a complex scenario to carry out multi-center clinical trials.
Methods. This paper presents a standards-based approach to ensure semantic integration required to facilitate the analysis of clinico-genomic clinical trials. To ensure interoperability across different institutions, we have developed a Semantic Interoperability Layer (SIL) to facilitate homogeneous access to clinical and genetic information, based on different well-established biomedical standards and following International Health (IHE) recommendations.
Results. The SIL has shown suitability for integrating biomedical knowledge and technologies to match the latest clinical advances in healthcare and the use of genomic information. This genomic data integration in the SIL has been tested with a diagnostic classifier tool that takes advantage of harmonized multi-center clinico-genomic data for training statistical predictive models.
Conclusions. The SIL has been adopted in national and international research initiatives, such as the EURECA-EU research project and the CIMED collaborative Spanish project, where the proposed solution has been applied and evaluated by clinical experts focused on clinico-genomic studies.Instituto de Salud Carlos III, PI13/02020Instituto de Salud Carlos III, PI13/0028
