High-Resolution Projectile Velocity And Acceleration Measurement Using Photonic Doppler Velocimetry
This paper describes the new photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) technique for measuring time-resolved projectile velocity and acceleration profiles for full flight of the launch package in a two-stage light-gas gun (LGG). This technique is shown to provide excellent temporal and spatial resolution in measurement. Two non-linear acceleration stages were observed for the first time on the LGG. When the gun bore was at atmospheric pressure, a strong opacity was observed during hypervelocity projectile motion >2200 km/s.Mechanical Engineerin

Improved Bar Impact Tests Using A Photonic Doppler Velocimeter
Bar impact tests, using the techniques described elsewhere in this symposium, were used to measure compressive and tensile strengths of borosilicate glass, soda lime glass, and a glass ceramic. The glass ceramic was 25% crystalline spinel, furnished by Corning Inc. There are two measures of compressive strength: the peak stress that can be transmitted in unconfined compression, and the >steady state> strength. For borosilicate glass and soda lime glass, these values were similar, being about 1.8 and 1.5 GPa, respectively. The glass ceramic (25% spinel) was almost 50% stronger. Tensile failure in the glass and glass ceramic takes places via surface flaws, and thus tensile strength is an extrinsic, as opposed to intrinsic property.Mechanical Engineerin
Laser space rendezvous and docking tradeoff
A spaceborne laser radar (LADAR) was configured to meet the requirements for rendezvous and docking with a cooperative object in synchronous orbit. The LADAR, configurated using existing pulsed CO2 laser technology and a 1980 system technology baseline, is well suited for the envisioned space tug missions. The performance of a family of candidate LADARS was analyzed. Tradeoff studies as a function of size, weight, and power consumption were carried out for maximum ranges of 50, 100, 200, and 300 nautical miles. The investigation supports the original contention that a rendezvous and docking LADAR can be constructed to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to the envisioned space missions. In fact, the CO2 ladar system offers distinct advantages over other candidate systems
Laser space rendezvous and docking system study continuation
Investigations were made of a configuration for a spaceborne laser radar (ladar) to meet the requirements for rendezvous and docking with a cooperative object in synchronous orbit. An analysis was completed of laser phase locking techniques, while experimental verification was made of pulse repetition frequency and resonant scanning control loops. Data measurements on a satellite mock-up were also made. The investigation supports the original contention that a rendezvous and docking ladar can be configured to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to envisioned space missions
Integrating Theory and Practice Into the Professional Responsibility Curriculum at the University of Texas
Teaching ethics to large classes has always proved to be a great challenge for those who teach professional responsibility at the University of Texas. A new program at the University of Texas to improve the professional responsibility curriculum is discussed
X-Ray Tomography To Measure Size Of Fragments From Penetration Of High-Velocity Tungsten Rods
Behind-armor debris that results from tungsten rods penetrating armor steel at 2 km/s was studied by analysis of recovered fragments. Fragment recovery was by means of particle board. Individual fragments were analyzed by x-ray tomography, which provides information for fragment identification, mass, shape, and penetration down to masses of a few milligrams. The experiments were complemented by AUTODYN and EPIC calculations. Fragments were steel or tungsten generated from the channel or from the breakout through the target rear surface. Channel fragment motions were well described by Tate theory. Breakout fragments had velocities from the projectile remnant to the channel velocity, apparently depending on where in the projectile a fragment originated. The fragment size distribution was extremely broad and did not correlate well with simple uniform-fragment-size models.Mechanical Engineerin
The Interaction Engine: Cuteness selection and the evolution of the interactional base for language
The deep structural diversity of languages suggests that our language capacities are not based on any single template but rather on an underlying ability and motivation for infants to acquire a culturally transmitted system. The hypothesis is that this ability has an interactional base that has discernable precursors in other primates. In this paper I explore a specific evolutionary route for the most puzzling aspect of this interactional base in humans, namely the development of an empathetic intentional stance. The route involves a generalization of mother-infant interaction patterns to all adults via a process (‘ cuteness selection’ ) analogous to, but distinct from, RA Fisher’s runaway sexual selection. This provides a cornerstone for the carrying capacity for language
