    Meeting the Expectations of Your Heritage Culture: Links between Attachment Style, Intragroup Marginalisation, and Psychological Adjustment

Few studies have examined the antecedents and outcomes of this perceived rejection – termed intragroup marginalisation – in spite of its implications for the adjustment of cultural migrants to the mainstream culture. The present study investigated whether anxious and avoidant attachment orientations among cultural migrants were associated with greater intragroup marginalisation and, in turn, with lower subjective well-being and flourishing, and higher acculturative stress. Anxious attachment was associated with heightened intragroup marginalisation from friends and, in turn, with increased acculturative stress; anxious attachment was also associated with increased intragroup marginalisation from family. Avoidant attachment was linked with increased intragroup marginalisation from family and, in turn, with decreased subjective well-being

    Radiokemi stĂ„r inför en vĂ€ldokumenterad utbildning och rekryteringskris. Äldre radiokemister gĂ„r i pension och fĂ€rre unga studerar radiokemi. I sin tur leder detta till brist pĂ„ nyutbildade radiokemister, sĂ„vĂ€l som förlust av historisk kunskap (eftersom kunskap ofta inte förmedlas). HĂ€r analyserade vi relevansen av studien av radiokemi i högre utbildning genom framtida radiokemists uppfattningar. VĂ„rt mĂ„l var att ge inblick i framtida radiokemisternas tĂ€nkande och ge nĂ„gra tydliga exempel pĂ„ hur man stöder relevans. En kvalitativ studie genomfördes genom en forskningsfrĂ„ga: Vilka uppfattningar om relevans upplever framtida radiokemister om radiokemistudier och radiokemi som fĂ€lt? Vi anvĂ€nde relevansmodellen av Stuckey et al. (2013) som ram för relevans. Detta valdes eftersom det erbjuder en omfattande definition av relevans inklusive individuella, samhĂ€lleliga och yrkesmĂ€ssiga dimensioner. Uppgifterna samlades in frĂ„n forskarstudenter i radiokemi (magister- och doktorsexamen) genom anvĂ€ndning av ett kvalitativt frĂ„geformulĂ€r som utformades med den valda relevansramen. Totalt deltog 15 framtida radiokemister i studien. Uppgifterna analyserades genom teoribaserad innehĂ„llsanalys med anvĂ€ndning av det valda relevansramverket. Enligt vĂ„ra uppgifter upplever framtida radiokemister att deras universitetsstudier och kemifĂ€ltet Ă€r mycket relevanta. De upplevde att Ă€mnen för radiokemi Ă€r intressanta (individuell relevans), fĂ€ltet har stor samhĂ€llseffekt genom radiofarmaceutika, energilösningar och miljöproblemlösning (samhĂ€llsrelevans) och att deras professionella framtid var tydlig, till exempel ett jobb inom kĂ€rnkraftsomrĂ„det industri (yrkesrelevans). Dessa resultat kan anvĂ€ndas för studentrekrytering och för att utveckla radiokemiundervisning mot en mer relevant inriktning.Radiokemialla on koulutus- ja rekrytointikriisi. Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan laadullinen tutkimus. Aineisto kerĂ€ttiin sĂ€hköpostikyselyillĂ€ sisĂ€ltĂ€en kaksi aineistonkeruusykliĂ€. Ainesot analysoitiin teoriapohjaisella sisĂ€llnöanalyysillĂ€ tunnetun Stuckeyn et al. (2013) relevanssia hyödyntĂ€en. Tutkimuksen mukaan tulevat radiokemistit kokivat alan erittĂ€in relevanssiksi. He kokivat, ettĂ€ radiokemian olevan mielenkiintoista (henkilökohtainen relevanssi), radiokemian yhteiskunnallisen merkityksen olevan suuri esim. lÀÀke- ja energiateollisuuden kautta (yhteiskunnallinen relevanssi) ja heillĂ€ oli selkeĂ€ kuva tulevaisuuden työllistymisestĂ€ (ammatillinen relevanssi). Tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan kĂ€yttÀÀ opiskelijoiden rekrytointiin ja radiokemian opetuksen relevanssin vahvistamiseen.Radiochemistry faces a well-documented training and recruitment crisis. Older radiochemists are retiring, and fewer young people are studying radiochemistry. In turn, this is leading to a shortage in newly qualified radiochemists, as well as a loss of historical knowledge (as know-how is often not passed-on). Here, we analyzed the relevance of the study of radiochemistry in higher education through future radiochemists’ perceptions. Our objective was to provide insights into future radiochemists’ thinking and provide some clear examples on how to support relevance. A qualitative study was conducted through a research question: What perceptions of relevance do future radiochemists experience about radiochemistry studies and radiochemistry as a field? We used the relevance model of Stuckey et al. (2013) as the relevance framework. This was selected because it offers a comprehensive definition of relevance including individual, societal, and vocational dimensions. The data were gathered from postgraduate radiochemistry students (masters and Ph.D. level) through use of a qualitative questionnaire that was designed using the selected relevance framework. In total, 15 future radiochemists participated in the study. The data were analyzed through theory-based content analysis using the selected relevance framework. According to our data, future radiochemists experience their university study and the chemistry field as being highly relevant. They experienced that radiochemistry topics are interesting (individual relevance), the field has great societal impact through radiopharmaceuticals, energy solutions, and environmental problem-solving (societal relevance), and that their professional future was clear, for example, a job in the nuclear industry (vocational relevance). These results can be used in student recruitment and in developing radiochemistry teaching toward a more relevance-oriented direction.Peer reviewe

    DNA repair capacity as a possible biomarker of breast cancer risk in female BRCA1 mutation carriers

    The BRCA1 gene product helps to maintain genomic integrity through its participation in the cellular response to DNA damage: specifically, the repair of double-stranded DNA breaks. An impaired cellular response to DNA damage is a plausible mechanism whereby BRCA1 mutation carriers are at increased risk of breast cancer. Hence, an individual's capacity to repair DNA may serve as a useful biomarker of breast cancer risk. The overall aim of the current study was to identify a biomarker of DNA repair capacity that could distinguish between BRCA1 mutation carriers and non-carriers. DNA repair capacity was assessed using three validated assays: the single-cell alkaline gel electrophoresis (comet) assay, the micronucleus test, and the enumeration of γ-H2AX nuclear foci. DNA repair capacity of peripheral blood lymphocytes from 25 cancer-free female heterozygous BRCA1 mutation carriers and 25 non-carrier controls was assessed at baseline and following cell exposure to γ – irradiation (2 Gy). We found no significant differences in the mean tail moment, in the number of micronuclei or in the number of γ-H2AX nuclear foci between the carriers and non-carriers at baseline, and following γ-irradiation. These data suggest that these assays are not likely to be useful in the identification of women at a high risk for breast cancer

    One-dimensional collision carts computer model and its design ideas for productive experiential learning

    We develop an Easy Java Simulation (EJS) model for students to experience the physics of idealized one-dimensional collision carts. The physics model is described and simulated by both continuous dynamics and discrete transition during collision. In the field of designing computer simulations, we discuss briefly three pedagogical considerations such as 1) consistent simulation world view with pen paper representation, 2) data table, scientific graphs and symbolic mathematical representations for ease of data collection and multiple representational visualizations and 3) game for simple concept testing that can further support learning. We also suggest using physical world setup to be augmented complimentary with simulation while highlighting three advantages of real collision carts equipment like tacit 3D experience, random errors in measurement and conceptual significance of conservation of momentum applied to just before and after collision.     Electro-kinetic technology as a low-cost method for dewatering food by-product

    Increasing volumes of food waste, intense environmental awareness, and stringent legislation have imposed increased demands upon conventional food waste management. Food byproducts that were once considered to be without value are now being utilized as reusable materials, fuels, and energy in order to reduce waste. One major barrier to the valorization of food by-products is their high moisture content. This has brought about the necessity of dewatering food waste for any potential re-use for certain disposal options. A laboratory system for experimentally characterizing electro-kinetic dewatering of food by-products was evaluated. The bench scale system, which is an augmented filter press, was used to investigate the dewatering at constant voltage. Five food by-products (brewer’s spent grain, cauliflower trimmings, mango peel, orange peel, and melon peel) were studied. The results indicated that electro-kinetic dewatering combined with mechanical dewatering can reduce the percentage of moisture from 78% to 71% for brewer’s spent grain, from 77% to 68% for orange peel, from 80% to 73% for mango peel, from 91% to 74% for melon peel, and from 92% to 80% for cauliflower trimmings. The total moisture reduction showed a correlation with electrical conductivity (R2ÂŒ0.89). The energy consumption of every sample was evaluated and was found to be up to 60 times more economical compared to thermal processing

    Morphological Criteria for Comparing Effects of X-Rays and Neon Ions on Mouse Small Intestine

    Several techniques have been used to assess changes in different parts of mouse small intestine three days after a single dose of either 16.5 Gy X-rays or 11 Gy neon beam. The doses were chosen to be approximately equivalent in terms of their effect on the number of microcolonies present. In qualitative terms, villous damage was seen after both types of radiation exposure: collared crypts, similar to those seen in biopsies taken from patients suffering from coeliac disease, were conspicuous after neon irradiation. In semi quantitative terms the doses used, although estimated from previous work to give biologically equivalent damage, produced a greater drop in microcolony numbers after X-irradiation, This makes all the more important the fact that significantly greater changes were seen after neon irradiation - a greater drop was seen in the number of villous profiles and the number of goblet cells per villus. There was also greater breakdown in the integrity of the villous basement membrane. Different responses after the two types of irradiation are therefore seen in the cryptal and villous compartment. Progress is being made towards identifying and quantitating radiation induced changes in different populations of cells or tissues in the small intestine

    Impact of highly basic solutions on sorption of Cs+ to subsurface sediments from the Hanford site, USA

    The effect of caustic NaNO3 solutions on the sorption of 137Cs to a Hanford site micaceous subsurface sediment was investigated as a function of base exposure time (up to 168 d), temperature (10°C or 50°C), and NaOH concentration (0.1 mol/L to 3 mol/L). At 10°C and 0.1 M NaOH, the slow evolution of [Al]aq was in stark contrast to the rapid increase and subsequent loss of [Al]aq observed at 50°C (regardless of base concentration). Exposure to 0.1 M NaOH at 10°C for up to 168 d exhibited little if any measurable effect on sediment mineralogy, Cs+ sorption, or Cs+ selectivity; sorption was well described with a two-site ion exchange model modified to include enthalpy effects. At 50°C, dissolution of phyllosilicate minerals increased with [OH]. A zeolite (tetranatrolite; Na2Al2Si3O10·2H2O) precipitated in 0.1 M NaOH after about 7 days, while an unnamed mineral phase (Na14Al12Si13O51·6H2O) precipitated after 4 and 2 days of exposure to 1 M and 3 M NaOH solutions, respectively. Short-term (16 h) Cs+ sorption isotherms (10−9–10−2 mol/L) were measured on sediment after exposure to 0.1 M NaOH for 56, 112, and 168 days at 50°C. There was a trend toward slightly lower conditional equilibrium exchange constants (∆log NaCsKc ~ 0.25) over the entire range of surface coverage, and a slight loss of high affinity sites (15%) after 168 days of pretreatment with 0.1 M base solution. Cs+ sorption to sediment over longer times was also measured at 50°C in the presence of NaOH (0.1 M, 1 M, and 3MNaOH) at Cs+ concentrations selected to probe a range of adsorption densities. Model simulations of Cs+ sorption to the sediment in the presence of 0.1 M NaOH for 112 days slightly under-predicted sorption at the lower Cs+ adsorption densities. At the higher adsorption densities, model simulations under-predicted sorption by 57%. This under-prediction was surmised to be the result of tetranatrolite precipitation, and subsequent slow Na → Cs exchange. At higher OH concentrations, Cs+ sorption in the presence of base for 112 days was unexpectedly equal to, or greater than that expected for pristine sediment. The precipitation of secondary phases, coupled with the fairly unique mica distribution and quantity across all size-fractions in the Hanford sediment, appears to mitigate the impact of base dissolution on Cs+ sorption
