On the unlikelihood of specific long range forces in immunologic and enzymatic reactions
In the past few years, a great many experiments have been performed by Rothen (24, 25) which he has interpreted as suggesting that antigen and antibody, and enzyme and substrate proteins, can react specifically, although separated by distances of hundreds of angstroms. This hypothesis seems to conflict with evidence accumulated from many other investigations indicating that short range interactions, involving distances usually associated with electrostatic and van der Waals’ forces, and hydrogen bonds, of the order of 5 A, operate in these reactions. We have therefore engaged in a critical analysis of the experimental techniques used by Rothen to determine whether some interpretation other than that invoking the existence of specific long range forces could be found to explain his experimental results
Starting characteristics of direct current motors powered by solar cells
Direct current motors are used in photovoltaic systems. Important characteristics of electric motors are the starting to rated current and torque ratios. These ratios are dictated by the size of the solar cell array and are different for the various dc motor types. Discussed here is the calculation of the starting to rated current ratio and starting to rated torque ratio of the permanent magnet, and series and shunt excited motors when powered by solar cells for two cases: with and without a maximum-power-point-tracker (MPPT) included in the system. Comparing these two cases, one gets a torque magnification of about 3 for the permanent magnet motor and about 7 for other motor types. The calculation of the torques may assist the PV system designer to determine whether or not to include an MPPT in the system
The interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons
We prove that the asymptotic field of a Skyrme soliton of any degree has a
non-trivial multipole expansion. It follows that every Skyrme soliton has a
well-defined leading multipole moment. We derive an expression for the linear
interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons in terms of their leading
multipole moments. This expression can always be made negative by suitable
rotations of one of the Skyrme solitons in space and iso-space.We show that the
linear interaction energy dominates for large separation if the orders of the
Skyrme solitons' multipole moments differ by at most two. In that case there
are therefore always attractive forces between the Skyrme solitons.Comment: 27 pages amslate
Note on an Equation of State for Linear Macromolecules in Monolayers
An equation of state for monolayers of large threadlike molecules based on the highly idealized quasi-lattice model is presented, and applied with fair success to the small number of experimental data available. Although protein molecules in monolayers may be highly organized structures, the theory can be applied to them at moderate film pressures without requiring unreasonable values for their molecular parameters. By analogy with the three dimensional
case, the theory requires improvement in order to apply to the low pressure regions, where experimental differences between protein and polymer films should become more

The significant capital outlay required to replicate such infrastructures constitutes a major obstacle to practical implementation and evaluation of research in this domain. Currently, most research into Cloud computing relies on either limited software simulation, or the use of a testbed environments

Raspberry Pi, a low-cost, low-power single-board computer, has made the construction of a miniature Cloud DCs more affordable.

(PiCloud), a scale model of a DC composed of clusters of
Raspberry Pi devices. The PiCloud emulates every layer of a
Cloud stack, ranging from resource virtualisation to network

Similar Microbial Communities Found on Two Distant Seafloor Basalts.
The oceanic crust forms two thirds of the Earth's surface and hosts a large phylogenetic and functional diversity of microorganisms. While advances have been made in the sedimentary realm, our understanding of the igneous rock portion as a microbial habitat has remained limited. We present the first comparative metagenomic microbial community analysis from ocean floor basalt environments at the Lō'ihi Seamount, Hawai'i, and the East Pacific Rise (EPR; 9°N). Phylogenetic analysis indicates the presence of a total of 43 bacterial and archaeal mono-phyletic groups, dominated by Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria, as well as Thaumarchaeota. Functional gene analysis suggests that these Thaumarchaeota play an important role in ammonium oxidation on seafloor basalts. In addition to ammonium oxidation, the seafloor basalt habitat reveals a wide spectrum of other metabolic potentials, including CO2 fixation, denitrification, dissimilatory sulfate reduction, and sulfur oxidation. Basalt communities from Lō'ihi and the EPR show considerable metabolic and phylogenetic overlap down to the genus level despite geographic distance and slightly different seafloor basalt mineralogy
Determination of lunar ilmentite abundances from remotely sensed data
The mapping of ilmenite on the surface of the moon is a necessary precursor to the investigation of prospective lunar base sites. Telescopic observations of the moon using a variety of narrow bandpass optical interference filters are being performed as a preliminary means of achieving this goal. Specifically, ratios of images obtained using filters centered at 0.40 and 0.56 microns provide quantitative estimates of TiO2 abundances. Analysis of preliminary distribution maps of TiO2 concentrations allows identification of specific high-Ti areas. Investigations of these areas using slit spectra in the range 0.03 to 0.85 microns are underway to search for discrete spectral signatures attributable to ilmenite
