A novel fluorescent "turn-on" chemosensor for nanomolar detection of Fe(III) from aqueous solution and its application in living cells imaging
An electronically active and spectral sensitive fluorescent “turn-on” chemosensor (BTP-1) based on the benzo-thiazolo-pyrimidine unit was designed and synthesized for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe³⁺ from aqueous medium. With Fe³⁺, the sensor BTP-1 showed a remarkable fluorescence enhancement at 554 nm (λex=314 nm) due to the inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer. The sensor formed a host-guest complex in 1:1 stoichiometry with the detection limit down to 0.74 nM. Further, the sensor was successfully utilized for the qualitative and quantitative intracellular detection of Fe³⁺ in two liver cell lines i.e., HepG2 cells (human hepatocellular liver carcinoma cell line) and HL-7701 cells (human normal liver cell line) by a confocal imaging technique

Variable - temperature scanning optical and force microscope
The implementation of a scanning microscope capable of working in confocal,
atomic force and apertureless near field configurations is presented. The
microscope is designed to operate in the temperature range 4 - 300 K, using
conventional helium flow cryostats. In AFM mode, the distance between the
sample and an etched tungsten tip is controlled by a self - sensing
piezoelectric tuning fork. The vertical position of both the AFM head and
microscope objective can be accurately controlled using piezoelectric coarse
approach motors. The scanning is performed using a compact XYZ stage, while the
AFM and optical head are kept fixed, allowing scanning probe and optical
measurements to be acquired simultaneously and in concert. The free optical
axis of the microscope enables both reflection and transmission experiments to
be performed.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, submitted to the journal "Review of Scientific

Processing of Sorghum From Different Varieties and Hybrids for Semolina and Their Products
The present study was undertaken with the objective to standardise procedures for preparation of semolina (rava) from sorghum, to identify the best genotype for preparation of semolina and to study the nutritional quality parameters of semolina. For processing of sorghum, ten varieties and five hybrids were used for preparation of semolina and their products. A process has been standardized for semolina preparation using ultra grinding mill from sorghum grain. The semolina yield ranged from 46.51% to 54.29%. Hybrid CSH-15R gave the highest yield of semolina (54.29%). Starch content in semolina ranged from 59.93% to 66.43%. The new genotypes Phule Vasudha, Phule Yashoda and M 35-1 showed higher levels of starch content as compared to the other genotypes. The Phule Vasudha and Selection-3 showed higher levels of total soluble sugars in grains, as well as in semolina than the other genotypes. Phule Maulee gave higher level of crude fibre content (3.12%). The amino acid profile of sorghum grain and semolina showed very minor differences in the content due to the processing of sorghum grains into various products like semolina. The new genotypes of rabi sorghum showed comparable results for the mineral with that of hybrids. The organoleptic properties of the sweet (shira), upama and idali prepared from semolina were judged on the basis of colour, texture and appearance, flavour, taste and overall acceptability of the products using semi-trained judges and 1 to 9 hedonic scales. All products prepared from semolina were like very much and gave highest rating of more than 8 hedonic scales. While considering the yield of semolina from sorghum grains as well as their nutritional composition and organoleptic properties of the niche products (shira, upama, idali) prepared from them, the varieties Phule Vasudha and Phule Yashoda were the best one as compared to the other varieties and hybrids and overall varieties were better than the hybrids
The Cosmology of Massless String Modes
We consider the spacetime dynamics of a gas of closed strings in the context
of General Relativity in a background of arbitrary spatial dimensions. Our
motivation is primarily late time String Gas Cosmology, where such a spacetime
picture has to emerge after the dilaton has stabilized. We find that after
accounting for the thermodynamics of a gas of strings, only string modes which
are massless at the self-dual radius are relevant, and that they lead to a
dynamics which is qualitatively different from that induced by the modes
usually considered in the literature. In the context of an ansatz with three
large spatial dimensions and an arbitrary number of small extra dimensions, we
obtain isotropic stabilization of these extra dimensions at the self-dual
radius. This stabilization occurs for fixed dilaton, and is induced by the
special string states we focus on. The three large dimensions undergo a regular
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker expansion. We also show that this framework for
late-time cosmology is consistent with observational bounds.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, references added (again
Radion Stabilization by Stringy Effects in General Relativity
We consider the effects of a gas of closed strings (treated quantum
mechanically) on a background where one dimension is compactified on a circle.
After we address the effects of a time dependent background on aspects of the
string spectrum that concern us, we derive the energy-momentum tensor for a
string gas and investigate the resulting space-time dynamics. We show that a
variety of trajectories are possible for the radius of the compactified
dimension, depending on the nature of the string gas, including a demonstration
within the context of General Relativity (i.e. without a dilaton) of a solution
where the radius of the extra dimension oscillates about the self-dual radius,
without invoking matter that violates the various energy conditions. In
particular, we find that in the case where the string gas is in thermal
equilibrium, the radius of the compactified dimension dynamically stabilizes at
the self-dual radius, after which a period of usual Friedmann-Robertson-Walker
cosmology of the three uncompactified dimensions can set in. We show that our
radion stabilization mechanism requires a stringy realization of inflation as
scalar field driven inflation invalidates our mechanism. We also show that our
stabilization mechanism is consistent with observational bounds.Comment: New section on the phenomonological implications of and bound on the

Direct to consumer advertising via the Internet, a study of hip resurfacing
With increased use of the internet for health information and direct to consumer advertising from medical companies, there is a concern about the quality of the information available for patients. The aim of this study was to examine the quality of health information on the internet for hip resurfacing. An assessment tool was designed to measure quality of information. Websites were measured on credibility of source; usability; currentness of the information; content relevance; content accuracy/completeness and disclosure/bias. Each website assessed was given a total score, based on number of scores achieved from the above categories websites were further analysed on author, geographical origin and possession of an independent credibility check. There was positive correlation between the overall score for the website and the score of each website in each assessment category. Websites by implant companies, doctors and hospitals scored poorly. Websites with an independent credibility check such as Health on the Net (HoN) scored twice the total scores of websites without. Like other internet health websites, the quality of information on hip resurfacing websites is variable. This study highlights methods by which to assess the quality of health information on the internet and advocates that patients should look for a statement of an "independent credibility check" when searching for information on hip resurfacing
