Convergence study and optimal weight functions of an explicit particle method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations
To increase the reliability of simulations by particle methods for
incompressible viscous flow problems, convergence studies and improvements of
accuracy are considered for a fully explicit particle method for incompressible
Navier--Stokes equations. The explicit particle method is based on a penalty
problem, which converges theoretically to the incompressible Navier--Stokes
equations, and is discretized in space by generalized approximate operators
defined as a wider class of approximate operators than those of the smoothed
particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) methods.
By considering an analytical derivation of the explicit particle method and
truncation error estimates of the generalized approximate operators, sufficient
conditions of convergence are conjectured.Under these conditions, the
convergence of the explicit particle method is confirmed by numerically
comparing errors between exact and approximate solutions. Moreover, by focusing
on the truncation errors of the generalized approximate operators, an optimal
weight function is derived by reducing the truncation errors over general
particle distributions. The effectiveness of the generalized approximate
operators with the optimal weight functions is confirmed using numerical
results of truncation errors and driven cavity flow. As an application for flow
problems with free surface effects, the explicit particle method is applied to
a dam break flow.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure
Studies on organic semiconductors. 15: Effects of the substituents on the photoconductivities of substituted anthracenes
The photocurrents of the substituted anthracenes, 1,5-diacetylanthracene (2), 1-acetylanthracene (3), 9-acetylanthracene (4), 1,5-dichloroanthracene (5), 1,5-diethylanthracene (6), 1,5-dimethoxyanthracene (7), 9-cyanoanthracene (8), and anthracene (1) were measured by using their surface type cells in nitrogen. The compounds of (1), (5), (6), (7), and (8) showed the photocurrent spectra which corresponded to the absorption spectra of their evaporated films. In the cases of (2) and (3), however, the anomalous photocurrent appeared in the threshold region of their absorption spectra. The appearance of the anomalous photocurrent was characteristic of anthracenes having the acetyl group at 1- and/or 5-position. The magnitude of the photocurrents of the 1,5-disubstituted anthracenes was similar to that of (1). The photocurrents of the monosubstituted anthracenes were smaller than that of (1). Among the monosubstituted anthracenes, the compound (4) showed no photocurrent under the same conditions. Contrary to the results obtained in the cases of phenazines, the photoconductivities of the anthracene derivatives became better in air
Substituent effects on the electrical conductivities of the phenazine derivatives
The and/or photoconductivities of 16 substituted phenazines having methoxy, hydroxy, chloro, nitro, amino or t-butyl group at 1-, 2-, 1, 6- or 2,7- positions of the phenazine ring measured by using the surface type cells. The energy gaps of the dark conductivities in the range 2.0 to 2.3 were independent of the kinds and the positions of the substituent groups, although the photo-absorption wavelength of the evaporated films changed with them. No correlation between photoconductivity and fluorescence was observed. The photocurrent was affected by the position of the substituents; namely, the photocurrents of the 1,6-di-substituted phenazines. When the substituent at 1,6-positions was hydroxy or amino group, however, the photocurrents decreased. The photocurrents decreased drastically in the presence of oxygen
Fidelity criterion for quantum-domain transmission and storage of coherent states beyond unit-gain constraint
We generalize the experimental success criterion for quantum
teleportation/memory in continuous-variable quantum systems to be suitable for
non-unit-gain condition by considering attenuation/amplification of the
coherent-state amplitude. The new criterion can be used for a non-ideal quantum
memory and long distance quantum communication as well as quantum devices with
amplification process. It is also shown that the framework to measure the
average fidelity is capable of detecting all Gaussian channels in quantum
domain.Comment: 4pages, No figures, Accepted for publication in PR
A filter based feature selection algorithm using null space of covariance matrix for DNA microarray gene expression data
We propose a new filter based feature selection algorithm for classification based on DNA microarray gene expression data. It utilizes null space of covariance matrix for feature selection. The algorithm can perform bulk reduction of features (genes) while maintaining the quality information in the reduced subset of features for discriminative purpose. Thus, it can be used as a pre-processing step for other feature selection algorithms. The algorithm does not assume statistical independency among the features. The algorithm shows promising classification accuracy when compared with other existing techniques on several DNA microarray gene expression datasets
O(N) and USp(N) QCD from String Theory
We propose a holographic dual of large N_c QCD with the gauge group O(N_c)
and USp(N_c) and N_f flavors of massless quarks. This is constructed by adding
O6-planes to an intersecting D4-D8 system in type IIA superstring theory. The
holographic dual description is formulated in the Witten's D4-brane background
with D8-branes and O6-planes embedded in it as probes. The D4-brane background
gives rise to a smooth interpolation of D8-anti-D8 pairs and an O6-anti-O6
pair. We show that the resultant brane configuration explains geometrically the
flavor symmetry breaking patterns in O(N_c) and USp(N_c) QCD that are caused by
quark bilinear condensates.
We next discuss that baryons can be realized as D4-anti-D4 pairs wrapped on
S^4 that intersect with the O6-plane. By analyzing the tachyons on it, we
reproduce the stability conditions of the baryons that are expected from the
gauge theory viewpoint. The stable baryon configurations are classified
systematically by using K-theory. We also give a similar analysis for the flux
tubes and again reproduce the results that are consistent with QCD.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, v2: discussions of flux tubes clarified,

Boosting up quantum key distribution by learning statistics of practical single photon sources
We propose a simple quantum-key-distribution (QKD) scheme for practical
single photon sources (SPSs), which works even with a moderate suppression of
the second-order correlation of the source. The scheme utilizes a
passive preparation of a decoy state by monitoring a fraction of the signal via
an additional beam splitter and a detector at the sender's side to monitor
photon number splitting attacks. We show that the achievable distance increases
with the precision with which the sub-Poissonian tendency is confirmed in
higher photon number distribution of the source, rather than with actual
suppression of the multi-photon emission events. We present an example of the
secure key generation rate in the case of a poor SPS with , in
which no secure key is produced with the conventional QKD scheme, and show that
learning the photon-number distribution up to several numbers is sufficient for
achieving almost the same achievable distance as that of an ideal SPS.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures; published version in New J. Phy
