    Observational detection of meteor-produced VLF electromagnetic radiation

    In November 1998, Croatian Physical Society's expedition to Mongolia was undertaken. The goal was to make measurements of the puzzling electrophonic sounds and very low frequency (VLF) radio emission from meteors during the anticipated Leonid meteor storm. During the night of 16/17 November 1998, an extremely high fireball activity of the Leonid meteors occured. During this period, we performed measurements of the VLF radiation from meteors. Here we present a positive signal which consists of a sequence of sharp, short VLF bursts, coincident with the appearance of meteor that was recorded by the video camera. This is the first completely controlled instrumental recording of such an event

    Acoustic and thermal transport properties of hard carbon formed from C_60 fullerene

    We report on extended investigation of the thermal transport and acoustical properties on hard carbon samples obtained by pressurization of C60 fullerene. Structural investigations performed by different techniques on the same samples indicate a very inhomogeneous structure at different scales, based on fractal-like amorphous clusters on the micrometer to submillimeter scale, which act as strong acoustic scatterers, and scarce microcrystallites on the nanometer scale. Ultrasonic experiments show a rapid increase in the attenuation with frequency, corresponding to a decrease in the localization length for vibrations. The data give evidence for a crossover from extended phonon excitations to localized fracton excitations. The thermal conductivity is characterized by a monotonous increase versus temperature, power law T1.4, for T ranging from 0.1 to 10 K, without any well-defined plateau, and a strictly linear-in-T variation between 20 and 300 K. The latter has to be related to the linear-in-T decrease of the sound velocity between 4 and 100 K, both linear regimes being characteristic of disordered or generally aperiodic structures, which can be analyzed by the ā€œphonon-fracton hoppingā€ model developed for fractal and amorphous structures

    Elastic modulus of multi-walled carbon nanotubes produced by catalytic chemical vapour deposition

    Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ideal structures for use as reinforcement fibres in composite materials, due to their extraordinary mechanical properties, in particular high Young's modulus (Eāˆ¼1TPa). Usually the high value of E is taken as granted for all types of carbon CNTs. Here we demonstrate that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) produced by catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CCVD) have low moduli (E<100GPa) independently of their growth conditions. We attribute this to the presence of structural defects. Additional high-temperature annealing failed to improve the mechanical properties. This study urges a better control of the growth process in order to obtain high strength CCVD grown MWCNTs suitable for reinforcement in large-scale industrial application

    Supersaturating silicon with transition metals by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting

    We investigate the possibility of creating an intermediate band semiconductor by supersaturating Si with a range of transition metals (Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pd, Pt, W, and Zn) using ion implantation followed by pulsed laser melting (PLM). Structural characterization shows evidence of either surface segregation or cellular breakdown in all transition metals investigated, preventing the formation of high supersaturations. However, concentration-depth profiling reveals that regions of Si supersaturated with Au and Zn are formed below the regions of cellular breakdown. Fits to the concentration-depth profile are used to estimate the diffusive speeds, v [subscript D], of Au and Zn, and put lower bounds on v [subscript D] of the other metals ranging from 10[superscript 2] to 10[superscript 4]ā€‰m/s. Knowledge of v [subscript D] is used to tailor the irradiation conditions and synthesize single-crystal Si supersaturated with 10[superscript 19] Au/cm[superscript 3] without cellular breakdown. Values of v [subscript D] are compared to those for other elements in Si. Two independent thermophysical properties, the solute diffusivity at the melting temperature, D [subscript s](T [subscript m]), and the equilibrium partition coefficient, k [subscript e], are shown to simultaneously affect v [subscript D]. We demonstrate a correlation between v [subscript D] and the ratio D [subscript s](T [subscript m])/k [subscript e] [superscript 0.67], which is exhibited for Group III, IV, and V solutes but not for the transition metals investigated. Nevertheless, comparison with experimental results suggests that D [subscript s](T [subscript m])/k [subscript e] [superscript 0.67] might serve as a metric for evaluating the potential to supersaturate Si with transition metals by PLM.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Faculty Early Career Development Program ECCS-1150878)Chesonis Family FoundationUnited States.
