    Seafood processing and seafood quality assurance are complementary disciplines that eventually lead to value addition. If fish is preserved at the time of glut landings and distributed uniformly through space and time, both the producer and consumer benefit. Freezing and drying are some of the examples of value added fish processing. The process of preparing varieties of products to suit the tastes of a wide spectrum of consumers and thereby adding value to the product known as the value addition in seafood processing

    Pattern visual evoked potential in newly diagnosed hypertensive individuals

    Background: Neuronal dysfunction in hypertension with multifactorial aetiology involves white matter involvement and strongly associated with presence of retinal micro vascular lesions. Cortical lesions associated with optic nerve damage and retinopathy leads to visual disturbances. VEPs are the potential changes recorded from the scalp in response to visual stimuli. Since optic nerve is considered to be the part of brain, its subclinical involvement is likely hypertension. It is in this connection the present study involving visual evoked potential was done to see if there was any change in functional integrity of visual pathways in hypertension. The aim of the study was to evaluate the visual evoked potential in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients who have not taken any antihypertensive drugs before.Methods: 50 cases were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and compared with 50 age, sex matched controls. Study was conducted after getting informed consent, by using the Medicaid polyrite instrument and VEP readings had been taken by standard procedure.Results: Study shows significant P100 latency when analysed through Levene’s test for equality of variances having p100 latencies for right eye 4.19±0.4 with p value of 0.003 and left eye 5.30±0.02 with p value of 0.000 substantiating prechiasmal lesion.Conclusions: Statistically significant delay in p100 suggests that the development of hypertensive retinopathy sub clinically, occurs in very early stages of Hypertension, which is not detectable on routine clinical examination. VEP can be suggested for screening in high-risk individuals to evaluate the functional integrity of visual pathway in hypertension and as a key to unravel the mystery of hidden Hypertensive Morbidity and Mortality.

    Guillain barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disease in pregnancy. Incidence varies from 1.2 and 1.9 cases per 100,000 people annually. It carries high maternal risk and may complicate pregnancy. It usually presents as an acute ascending symmetrical polyneuropathy. It requires early diagnosis and multidisciplinary supportive care for its management.

    Characterization of ribonucleases and ribonuclease inhibitor in subcellular fractions from rat adrenals

The presence of two RNA-degrading enzymes, one with optimum activity at pH 5·6 (acid ribonuclease) and the other with optimum activity at pH 7·8 (alkaline ribonuclease), in rat adrenals has been demonstrated. The acid ribonuclease was localized in the mitochondrial fraction whereas the alkaline ribonuclease was present in mitochondria as well as in the supernatant fraction. Freezing and thawing of mitochondria and treatment with Triton X-100 gave a three- to four-fold increase in acid-ribonuclease activity, whereas the mitochondrial alkaline-ribonuclease activity was practically unaffected. 2. The amount of free ribonuclease in the adrenal supernatant was small. Treatment of the supernatant fraction with N-ethylmaleimide resulted in release of large amounts of ribonuclease activity, indicating the presence of a ribonuclease inhibitor having reactive thiol groups. 3. Considerable amounts of free ribonuclease inhibitor in excess over the bound alkaline ribonuclease are present in the rat-adrenal supernatant fraction. The inhibitor is heat-labile and non-diffusible. A 400-500-fold purification of the ribonuclease inhibitor was achieved by ammonium sulphate fractionation, treatment with calcium phosphate gel and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. It is concluded that the adrenal inhibitor is protein in nature, similar to the inhibitor present in rat liver

    DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF STABILITY INDICATING RP-HPLC METHOD FOR THE SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF ALISKIREN HEMIFUMARATE AND VALSARTAN IN BULK AND PHARMACEUTICAL DOSAGE FORM

    Objective: A new, simple, selective, and reproducible stability indicating reversed - phase high performance liquid chromatography method for thesimultaneous estimation of Aliskiren (ALN) Hemifumarate and Valsartan (VLN) in bulk drug, and tablet dosage form was developed and validated asper ICH guidelines.Methods: The chromatographic separation was performed using a nucleosil C - 18 column and the analytes were detected by a malondialdehyde - 2010photodiode array detector. The mobile phase composed of methanol: potassium dihydrogen ortho phosphate buffer (adjusted to pH 3 withorthophosphoric acid). The flow rate was set at 1 ml/minutes, and the detection was carried out at 225 nm.Results: ALN Hemifumarate and VLN showed a retention time of 3.84 and 5.96 minutes, respectively. The linear dynamic range was found to be5-50 mcg/ml and 5-30 mcg/ml with a co-relation co-efficient of 0.992 and 0.985 for ALN and VLN, respectively, with mean percentage recoveries of99.95% and 99.25%. The results were validated and were found to successfully obey the parameters as per ICH guidelines.Conclusion: Hence, the method can be successfully applied for routine quality control analysis and stability studies for both ALN Hemifumarate andVLN in bulk and tablet dosage form as per regulatory requirements.Keywords: Aliskiren Hemifumarate, Valsartan, Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography, Stress degradation study, ICH guidelines
