Breaking Kelvin: Circulation conservation and vortex breakup in MHD at low Magnetic Prandtl Number
In this paper we examine the role of weak magnetic fields in breaking
Kelvin's circulation theorem and in vortex breakup in two-dimensional
magnetohydrodynamics for the physically important case of a low magnetic
Prandtl number (low ) fluid. We consider three canonical inviscid solutions
for the purely hydrodynamical problem, namely a Gaussian vortex, a circular
vortex patch and an elliptical vortex patch. We examine how magnetic fields
lead to an initial loss of circulation and attempt to derive scaling
laws for the loss of circulation as a function of field strength and diffusion
as measured by two non-dimensional parameters. We show that for all cases the
loss of circulation depends on the integrated effects of the Lorentz force,
with the patch cases leading to significantly greater circulation loss. For the
case of the elliptical vortex the loss of circulation depends on the total area
swept out by the rotating vortex and so this leads to more efficient
circulation loss than for a circular vortex.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figure
On certain finiteness questions in the arithmetic of modular forms
We investigate certain finiteness questions that arise naturally when
studying approximations modulo prime powers of p-adic Galois representations
coming from modular forms. We link these finiteness statements with a question
by K. Buzzard concerning p-adic coefficient fields of Hecke eigenforms.
Specifically, we conjecture that for fixed N, m, and prime p with p not
dividing N, there is only a finite number of reductions modulo p^m of
normalized eigenforms on \Gamma_1(N). We consider various variants of our basic
finiteness conjecture, prove a weak version of it, and give some numerical

The opposites task: Using general rules to test cognitive flexibility in preschoolers
A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. Executive functions play an important role in cognitive development, and during the preschool years especially, children's performance is limited in tasks that demand flexibility in their behavior. We asked whether preschoolers would exhibit limitations when they are required to apply a general rule in the context of novel stimuli on every trial (the "opposites" task). Two types of inhibitory processing were measured: response interference (resistance to interference from a competing response) and proactive interference (resistance to interference from a previously relevant rule). Group data show 3-year-olds have difficulty inhibiting prepotent tendencies under these conditions, whereas 5-year-olds' accuracy is near ceiling in the task. (Contains 4 footnotes and 1 table.
Analisis Strategi Promosi dan Harga Pengaruhnya terhadap Keputusan Pembelian Mobil Suzuki Ertiga pada PT. Sinar Galesong Pratama Manado
Keputusan pembelian konsumen merupakan penilaian seseorang tentang kinerja produk dalam kaitannya dengan ekspektasi konsumen. Jika konsumen merasa puas akan pelayanan yang diberikan maka konsumen memberikan keputusan untuk membeli produk tersebut. Jika sebaliknya, layanan itu tidak sesuai harapan, maka konsumen cenderung tidak tertarik lagi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh Strategi Promosi dan Harga secara simultan dan parsial terhadap Keputusan Pembelian Mobil Suzuki Ertiga Pada PT. Sinar Galesong Pratama Manado. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian asosiatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pembagian angket pada setiap sampel yang ditetapkan (responden). Sampel penelitian menggunakan rumus Slovin sebanyak 100 responden terpilih. Teknik analisa data menggunakan Analisis regresi berganda dan uji hipotesis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara simultan dan parsial Strategi Promosi dan Harga berpengaruh signifikan terhadap Keputusan Pembelian konsumen. Manajemen sinar galengsong sebaiknya lebih memperhatikan strategi-strategi yang dipakai guna peningkatan Keputusan Pembelian konsumen untuk produknya agar dapat memenuhi tujuannnya, yaitu meningkatkan volume penjualan mempertahankan kelangsungan hidup Perusahaan tersebut. A human antibody against Zika virus crosslinks the E protein to prevent infection
The recent Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic has been linked to unusual and severe clinical manifestations including microcephaly in fetuses of infected pregnant women and Guillian-Barré syndrome in adults. Neutralizing antibodies present a possible therapeutic approach to prevent and control ZIKV infection. Here we present a 6.2 Å resolution three-dimensional cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) structure of an infectious ZIKV (strain H/PF/2013, French Polynesia) in complex with the Fab fragment of a highly therapeutic and neutralizing human monoclonal antibody, ZIKV-117. The antibody had been shown to prevent fetal infection and demise in mice. The structure shows that ZIKV-117 Fabs cross-link the monomers within the surface E glycoprotein dimers as well as between neighbouring dimers, thus preventing the reorganization of E protein monomers into fusogenic trimers in the acidic environment of endosomes
Dynamic Energy Management
We present a unified method, based on convex optimization, for managing the
power produced and consumed by a network of devices over time. We start with
the simple setting of optimizing power flows in a static network, and then
proceed to the case of optimizing dynamic power flows, i.e., power flows that
change with time over a horizon. We leverage this to develop a real-time
control strategy, model predictive control, which at each time step solves a
dynamic power flow optimization problem, using forecasts of future quantities
such as demands, capacities, or prices, to choose the current power flow
values. Finally, we consider a useful extension of model predictive control
that explicitly accounts for uncertainty in the forecasts. We mirror our
framework with an object-oriented software implementation, an open-source
Python library for planning and controlling power flows at any scale. We
demonstrate our method with various examples. Appendices give more detail about
the package, and describe some basic but very effective methods for

The Structure of Stellar Coronae in Active Binary Systems
A survey of 28 stars using EUV spectra has been conducted to establish the
structure of stellar coronae in active binary systems from the EMD, electron
densities, and scale sizes. Observations obtained by the EUVE during 9 years of
operation are included for the stars in the sample. EUVE data allow a
continuous EMD to be constructed in the range log T~5.6-7.4, using iron
emission lines. These data are complemented with IUE observations to model the
lower temperature range. Inspection of the EMD shows an outstanding narrow
enhancement, or ``bump'' peaking around log T~6.9 in 25 of the stars, defining
a fundamental coronal structure. The emission measure per unit stellar area
decreases with increasing orbital (or photometric) periods of the target stars;
stars in binaries generally have more material at coronal temperatures than
slowly rotating single stars. High electron densities (Ne>10^12 cm^-3) are
derived at ~10 MK for some targets, implying small emitting volumes. The
observations suggest the magnetic stellar coronae of these stars are consistent
with two basic classes of magnetic loops: solar-like loops with maximum
temperature around log T~6.3 and lower electron densities (Ne>10^9-10.5), and
hotter loops peaking around log T~6.9 with higher electron densities
(Ne>10^12). For the most active stars, material exists at much higher
temperatures (log T>6.9) as well. However, current ab initio stellar loop
models cannot reproduce such a configuration. Analysis of the light curves of
these systems reveals signatures of rotation of coronal material, as well as

On the Structure and Scale of Cosmic Ray Modified Shocks
Strong astrophysical shocks, diffusively accelerating cosmic rays (CR) ought
to develop CR precursors. The length of such precursor is believed to
be set by the ratio of the CR mean free path to the shock speed,
i.e., , which is formally
independent of the CR pressure . However, the X-ray observations of
supernova remnant shocks suggest that the precursor scale may be significantly
shorter than which would question the above estimate unless the
magnetic field is strongly amplified and the gyroradius is strongly
reduced over a short (unresolved) spatial scale. We argue that while the CR
pressure builds up ahead of the shock, the acceleration enters into a strongly
nonlinear phase in which an acoustic instability, driven by the CR pressure
gradient, dominates other instabilities (at least in the case of low
plasma). In this regime the precursor steepens into a strongly nonlinear front
whose size scales with \emph{the CR pressure}as , where is the scale of
the developed acoustic turbulence, and is the ratio of CR to gas
pressure. Since , the precursor scale reduction may be strong
in the case of even a moderate gas heating by the CRs through the acoustic and
