3C 295, a cluster and its cooling flow at z=0.46
We present ROSAT HRI data of the distant and X-ray luminous (L_x(bol)=2.6^
{+0.4}_{-0.2} 10^{45}erg/sec) cluster of galaxies 3C 295. We fit both a
one-dimensional and a two-dimensional isothermal beta-model to the data, the
latter one taking into account the effects of the point spread function (PSF).
For the error analysis of the parameters of the two-dimensional model we
introduce a Monte-Carlo technique. Applying a substructure analysis, by
subtracting a cluster model from the data, we find no evidence for a merger,
but we see a decrement in emission South-East of the center of the cluster,
which might be due to absorption. We confirm previous results by Henry &
Henriksen(1986) that 3C 295 hosts a cooling flow. The equations for the simple
and idealized cooling flow analysis presented here are solely based on the
isothermal beta-model, which fits the data very well, including the center of
the cluster. We determine a cooling flow radius of 60-120kpc and mass accretion
rates of dot{M}=400-900 Msun/y, depending on the applied model and temperature
profile. We also investigate the effects of the ROSAT PSF on our estimate of
dot{M}, which tends to lead to a small overestimate of this quantity if not
taken into account. This increase of dot{M} (10-25%) can be explained by a
shallower gravitational potential inferred by the broader overall profile
caused by the PSF, which diminishes the efficiency of mass accretion. We also
determine the total mass of the cluster using the hydrostatic approach. At a
radius of 2.1 Mpc, we estimate the total mass of the cluster (M{tot}) to be
(9.2 +/- 2.7) 10^{14}Msun. For the gas to total mass ratio we get M{gas}/M{tot}
=0.17-0.31, in very good agreement with the results for other clusters of

Microwave saturation of the Rydberg states of electrons on helium
We present measurements of the resonant microwave excitation of the Rydberg
energy levels of surface state electrons on superfluid helium. The temperature
dependent linewidth agrees well with theoretical predictions and is very small
below 300 mK. Absorption saturation and power broadening were observed as the
fraction of electrons in the first excited state was increased to 0.49, close
to the thermal excitation limit of 0.5. The Rabi frequency was determined as a
function of microwave power. The high values of the ratio of the Rabi frequency
to linewidth confirm this system as an excellent candidate for creating qubits.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Towards the development of data governance standards for using clinical free-text data in health research: a position paper
Background: Free-text clinical data (such as outpatient letters or nursing notes) represent a vast, untapped source of rich information that, if more accessible for research, would clarify and supplement information coded in structured data fields. Data usually need to be de-identified or anonymised before they can be reused for research, but there is a lack of established guidelines to govern effective de-identification and use of free-text information and avoid damaging data utility as a by-product. /
Objective: We set out to work towards data governance standards to integrate with existing frameworks for personal data use, to enable free-text data to be used safely for research for patient/public benefit. /
Methods: We outlined (UK) data protection legislation and regulations for context, and conducted a rapid literature review and UK-based case studies to explore data governance models used in working with free-text data. We also engaged with stakeholders including text mining researchers and the general public to explore perceived barriers and solutions in working with clinical free-text. /
Results: We propose a set of recommendations, including the need: for authoritative guidance on data governance for the reuse of free-text data; to ensure public transparency in data flows and uses; to treat de-identified free-text as potentially identifiable with use limited to accredited data safe-havens; and, to commit to a culture of continuous improvement to understand the relationships between efficacy of de-identification and re-identification risks, so this can be communicated to all stakeholders. /
Conclusions: By drawing together the findings of a combination of activities, our unique study has added new knowledge towards the development of data governance standards for the reuse of clinical free-text data for secondary purposes. Whilst working in accord with existing data governance frameworks, there is a need for further work to take forward the recommendations we have proposed, with commitment and investment, to assure and expand the safe reuse of clinical free-text data for public benefit
Photorespiration: metabolic pathways and their role in stress protection
Photorespiration results from the oxygenase reaction catalysed by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/
oxygenase. In this reaction glycollate-2-phosphate is produced and subsequently metabolized in the
photorespiratory pathway to form the Calvin cycle intermediate glycerate-3-phosphate. During this metabolic
process, CO2 and NH3 are produced and ATP and reducing equivalents are consumed, thus
making photorespiration a wasteful process. However, precisely because of this ine¤ciency, photorespiration
could serve as an energy sink preventing the overreduction of the photosynthetic electron transport
chain and photoinhibition, especially under stress conditions that lead to reduced rates of photosynthetic
CO2 assimilation. Furthermore, photorespiration provides metabolites for other metabolic processes, e.g.
glycine for the synthesis of glutathione, which is also involved in stress protection. In this review, we
describe the use of photorespiratory mutants to study the control and regulation of photorespiratory pathways.
In addition, we discuss the possible role of photorespiration under stress conditions, such as
drought, high salt concentrations and high light intensities encountered by alpine plants
Reclaiming literacies: competing textual practices in a digital higher education
This essay examines the implications of the ubiquitous use of the term ‘digital literacies’ in higher education and its increasing alignment with institutional and organisational imperatives. It suggests that the term has been stripped of its provenance and association with disciplinary knowledge production and textual practice. Instead it is called into service rhetorically in order to promote competency based agendas both in and outside the academy. The piece also points to a tendency to position teachers in deficit with regard to their technological capabilities and pay scant attention to their own disciplinary and scholarly practices in a digital world. It concludes that there is a case for building on established theoretical and conceptual frameworks from literacy studies if we wish to integrate advantages of the digital landscape with thoughtful teaching practice
Magnetoresistance of nondegenerate quantum electron channels formed on the surface of superfluid helium
Transport properties of quasi-one-dimensional nondegenerate quantum wires
formed on the surface of liquid helium in the presence of a normal magnetic
field are studied using the momentum balance equation method and the memory
function formalism. The interaction with both kinds of scatterers available
(vapor atoms and capillary wave quanta) is considered. We show that unlike
classical wires, quantum nondegenerate channels exhibit strong
magnetoresistance which increases with lowering the temperature.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
INFN What Next: Ultra-relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
This document was prepared by the community that is active in Italy, within
INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), in the field of
ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The experimental study of the phase
diagram of strongly-interacting matter and of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP)
deconfined state will proceed, in the next 10-15 years, along two directions:
the high-energy regime at RHIC and at the LHC, and the low-energy regime at
FAIR, NICA, SPS and RHIC. The Italian community is strongly involved in the
present and future programme of the ALICE experiment, the upgrade of which will
open, in the 2020s, a new phase of high-precision characterisation of the QGP
properties at the LHC. As a complement of this main activity, there is a
growing interest in a possible future experiment at the SPS, which would target
the search for the onset of deconfinement using dimuon measurements. On a
longer timescale, the community looks with interest at the ongoing studies and
discussions on a possible fixed-target programme using the LHC ion beams and on

Glucose effects on long-term memory performance : duration and domain specificity.
Rational; Previous research has suggested that long term- verbal declarative memory is particularly sensitive to enhancement by glucose loading, however investigation of glucose effects on certain memory domains has hitherto been neglected. Therefore domain specificity of glucose effects merits further elucidation. Objectives; The aim of the present research was to provide a more comprehensive investigation of the possible effects of glucose administration on different aspects of memory by i) contrasting the effect of glucose administration on different memory domains (implicit/ explicit memory; verbal/ non-verbal memory, recognition/ familiarity processes), ii) investigating whether potential effects on memory domains differ depending on the dose of glucose administered (25g versus 60g), iii) exploring the duration of the glucose facilitation effect (assessment of memory performance 35 min and 1 week after encoding). Methods; a double blind, between- subjects design was used to test the effects of administration of 25 and 60g glucose on memory performance. Results; Implicit memory was improved following administration of 60g of glucose. Glucose supplementation failed to improve face recognition performance but significantly improved performance of word recall and recognition following administration of 60g of glucose. However, effects were not maintained one-week following encoding. Conclusions; Improved implicit memory performance following glucose administration has not been reported before. Furthermore the current data tentatively suggest that level of processing may determine the required glucose dosage to demonstrate memory improvement and that higher dosages may be able to exert effects on memory pertaining to both hippocampal and non-hippocampal brain regions
Searching for New Physics Through AMO Precision Measurements
We briefly review recent experiments in atomic, molecular, and optical
physics using precision measurements to search for physics beyond the Standard
Model. We consider three main categories of experiments: searches for changes
in fundamental constants, measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the
