Stories of pre-war, war and exile: Bosnian refugee children in Sweden.
While standardized questionnaires produce counts of isolated events, a semi-structured interview derives a story, a complex narrative in time and place. Ninety Bosnian refugee children and adolescents (ages 1-20), resettled in Sweden, were assessed in a semi-structured clinical interview designed to identify and offer support to children at risk. A family-child account of traumatic exposure was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Type-stories or clusters of experience were identified for three distinct periods: prior to war, during war, and after war in exile. The extent of trauma-stress exposure during each of these periods proved unrelated. Pre-war experience presented as preponderantly good and safe. Differences in child exposure during war and exile could be understood in relation to identifiable socio-demographic factors; particularly ethnic background, social class, child age and family size. Further, the stories derived cast light on the equity of Swedish refugee reception, exposing both egalitarian and discriminatory tendencies
On the virial coefficients of nonabelian anyons
We study a system of nonabelian anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong
magnetic field. Using diagrammatic techniques, we prove that the virial
coefficients do not depend on the statistics parameter. This is true for all
representations of all nonabelian groups for the statistics of the particles
and relies solely on the fact that the effective statistical interaction is a

Cognitive demands of face monitoring: Evidence for visuospatial overload
Young children perform difficult communication tasks better face to face than when they cannot see one another (e.g., Doherty-Sneddon & Kent, 1996). However, in recent studies, it was found that children aged 6 and 10 years, describing abstract shapes, showed evidence of face-to-face interference rather than facilitation. For some communication tasks, access to visual signals (such as facial expression and eye gaze) may hinder rather than help children’s communication. In new research we have pursued this interference effect. Five studies are described with adults and 10- and 6-year-old participants. It was found that looking at a face interfered with children’s abilities to listen to descriptions of abstract shapes. Children also performed visuospatial memory tasks worse when they looked at someone’s face prior to responding than when they looked at a visuospatial pattern or at the floor. It was concluded that performance on certain tasks was hindered by monitoring another person’s face. It is suggested that processing of visual communication signals shares certain processing resources with the processing of other visuospatial information
Disorder Induced Transitions in Layered Coulomb Gases and Superconductors
A 3D layered system of charges with logarithmic interaction parallel to the
layers and random dipoles is studied via a novel variational method and an
energy rationale which reproduce the known phase diagram for a single layer.
Increasing interlayer coupling leads to successive transitions in which charge
rods correlated in N>1 neighboring layers are nucleated by weaker disorder. For
layered superconductors in the limit of only magnetic interlayer coupling, the
method predicts and locates a disorder-induced defect-unbinding transition in
the flux lattice. While N=1 charges dominate there, N>1 disorder induced defect
rods are predicted for multi-layer superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, RevTe
New CMB Power Spectrum Constraints from MSAMI
We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the
combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy
Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10
square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2
icm to 20 icm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of
our analysis methods, compare the results from the three flights, derive new
constraints on the CMB power spectrum from the combined data and reduce the
data to total-power Wiener-filtered maps of the CMB. A key feature of this new

Classical phase space and statistical mechanics of identical particles
Starting from the quantum theory of identical particles, we show how to
define a classical mechanics that retains information about the quantum
statistics. We consider two examples of relevance for the quantum Hall effect:
identical particles in the lowest Landau level, and vortices in the
Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landau model. In both cases the resulting {\em classical}
statistical mechanics is shown to be a nontrivial classical limit of Haldane's

Structure of nonlinear gauge transformations
Nonlinear Doebner-Goldin [Phys. Rev. A 54, 3764 (1996)] gauge transformations
(NGT) defined in terms of a wave function do not form a group. To get
a group property one has to consider transformations that act differently on
different branches of the complex argument function and the knowledge of the
value of is not sufficient for a well defined NGT. NGT that are well
defined in terms of form a semigroup parametrized by a real number
and a nonzero which is either an integer or . An extension of NGT to projectors and general density matrices
leads to NGT with complex . Both linearity of evolution and Hermiticity
