    Building a 3.5 m prototype interferometer for the Q & A vacuum birefringence experiment and high precision ellipsometry

    We have built and tested a 3.5 m high-finesse Fabry-Perot prototype inteferometer with a precision ellipsometer for the QED test and axion search (Q & A) experiment. We use X-pendulum-double-pendulum suspension designs and automatic control schemes developed by the gravitational-wave detection community. Verdet constant and Cotton-Mouton constant of the air are measured as a test. Double modulation with polarization modulation 100 Hz and magnetic-field modulation 0.05 Hz gives 10^{-7} rad phase noise for a 44-minute integration.Comment: This draft has been presented in the 5th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Wave

    Ultrafast Resonant Polarization Interferometry: Towards the First Direct Detection of Vacuum Polarization

    Vacuum polarization, an effect predicted nearly 70 years ago, is still yet to be directly detected despite significant experimental effort. Previous attempts have made use of large liquid-helium cooled electromagnets which inadvertently generate spurious signals that mask the desired signal. We present a novel approach for the ultra-sensitive detection of optical birefringence that can be usefully applied to a laboratory detection of vacuum polarization. The new technique has a predicted birefringence measurement sensitivity of Δn1020\Delta n \sim 10^{20} in a 1 second measurement. When combined with the extreme polarizing fields achievable in this design we predict that a vacuum polarization signal will be seen in a measurement of just a few days in duration.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. submitted to PR

    Quantization of the Hall conductivity well beyond the adiabatic limit in pulsed magnetic fields

    We measure the Hall conductivity, σxy\sigma_{xy}, on a Corbino geometry sample of a high-mobility AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure in a pulsed magnetic field. At a bath temperature about 80 mK, we observe well expressed plateaux in σxy\sigma_{xy} at integer filling factors. In the pulsed magnetic field, the Laughlin condition of the phase coherence of the electron wave functions is strongly violated and, hence, is not crucial for σxy\sigma_{xy} quantization.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

    Conservation laws for invariant functionals containing compositions

    The study of problems of the calculus of variations with compositions is a quite recent subject with origin in dynamical systems governed by chaotic maps. Available results are reduced to a generalized Euler-Lagrange equation that contains a new term involving inverse images of the minimizing trajectories. In this work we prove a generalization of the necessary optimality condition of DuBois-Reymond for variational problems with compositions. With the help of the new obtained condition, a Noether-type theorem is proved.     The BMV experiment : a novel apparatus to study the propagation of light in a transverse magnetic field

    In this paper, we describe in detail the BMV (Bir\'efringence Magn\'etique du Vide) experiment, a novel apparatus to study the propagation of light in a transverse magnetic field. It is based on a very high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity and on pulsed magnets specially designed for this purpose.     Reassessing the Impact of High Performance Workplaces

    High performance workplace practices were extolled as an efficient means to increase firm productivity. The empirical evidence is disputed, however. To assess the productivity effects of a broad variety of measures, we simultaneously account for both unobserved heterogeneity and endogeneity using establishment panel data for Germany. We show that increasing employee participation enhances firm productivity in Germany, whereas incentive systems do not foster productivity. Our results further indicate that firms with structural productivity problems tend to introduce organisational changes that increase employee participation whereas well performing firms are more likely to offer incentives

    Recommendations for the Use of Serious Games in Neurodegenerative Disorders: 2016 Delphi Panel

    The use of Serious Games (SG) in the health domain is expanding. In the field of neurodegenerative disorders (ND) such as Alzheimer’s disease, SG are currently employed both to support and improve the assessment of different functional and cognitive abilities, and to provide alternative solutions for patients’ treatment, stimulation, and rehabilitation. As the field is quite young, recommendations on the use of SG in people with ND are still rare. In 2014 we proposed some initial recommendations (Robert et al., 2014). The aim of the present work was to update them, thanks to opinions gathered by experts in the field during an expert Delphi panel. Results confirmed that SG are adapted to elderly people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, and can be employed for several purposes, including assessment, stimulation, and improving wellbeing, with some differences depending on the population (e.g., physical stimulation may be better suited for people with MCI). SG are more adapted for use with trained caregivers (both at home and in clinical settings), with a frequency ranging from 2 to 4 times a week. Importantly, the target of SG, their frequency of use and the context in which they are played depend on the SG typology (e.g., Exergame, cognitive game), and should be personalized with the help of a clinician

    Na sociedade contemporânea, a intensificação do trabalho representa, cada vez mais, um mal-estar, manifesto em problemas de saúde dos trabalhadores. Como problemática da Saúde Coletiva/Saúde do Trabalhador, o objeto "intensificação do trabalho e saúde" pode ser estudado nas práticas específicas de exploração e expropriação do conhecimento técnico e social do trabalhador tendentes a confrontar sua capacidade coletiva, visto que o enfraquecimento da dimensão coletiva está a desencadear múltiplas manifestações de sofrimento e penosidade no trabalho. Neste estudo, analisamos o processo de intensificação do trabalho e saúde a partir da percepção dos trabalhadores da Mercedes Benz do Brasil, em São Bernardo do Campo. Realizamos sete visitas à fábrica e vinte e nove entrevistas: vinte e duas com trabalhadores diretos e sete com representantes sindicais. Os resultados e a discussão são apresentados em três categorias: ritmo de trabalho, prolongamento do trabalho, e administração por estresse. O estudo contribui para o avanço do entendimento da intensificação do trabalho e saúde e, ao mesmo tempo, traz indicações sobre os limites e as possibilidades postos à ação coletiva dos trabalhadores nas atuais condições históricas
