Artist Bio: Dan S. Wang is a writer, artist, organizer, and printer who was born in the American Midwest in 1968 to immigrant parents. Dan’s constant concerns are the relationships between art + politics, critical reflection + social action, place + history. His research includes inquiries into the postindustrial cultural politics of the Midwest, letterpress printing as an archaeology of obsolescence, race and difference in the theater of crisis capitalism, and the cultural landscape of postsocialist China. As a print media artist he primarily uses letterpress printing and hand set typography but avails himself of other media as words and letterforms hit their limits. Helen Wang

Born in 1903 as Peng Jianqing, Helen Wang was raised in a traditional scholarly family within a confined compound in Wuhu, Anhui Province. She was the only girl and her parents’ favorite. At thirteen, her father moved the entire family to Shanghai so she could attend St. Mary Girl’s School. While there, she learned English, read Western literature, enjoyed music, and adopted the English name of Helen (Shen 56). Before she graduated, both her parents passed away, leaving her in the care of her eldest brother, who soon married her off to a man working for a Sino-Japanese mine in Fengtian (now Shenyang) that was more than a thousand miles away from Shanghai. Sixteen-year-old Helen bore her husband’s debauchery and anti-Chinese deference to his Japanese employers for a brief time before returning to Shanghai to try to make her own life. Since her brother was unwilling to take her back in, she took up residence with her godmother and managed to secure a job as a typist in a company under British American Tobacco (S. Zhang 404)

Correcting Things as Correcting Feelings: A Phenomenological Study of Wang Yang-ming’s Doctrine of Ge-Wu

This article is designed to offer a phenomenological reading of Wang Yang-ming’s (王陽明) doctrine of ge-wu (格物), which, as a part of Wang radical reading of The Great Learning (Da-Xue 大學), distinguishes his doctrine from that of Zhu Xi (朱熹). Wang argues that ge-wu, as rectifying things, is the same process with the act of cheng-yi (誠意), in which yi (意) and wu (物) form a relation of intentionality in Edmund Husserl’s sense. Since for Wang, what can be made sincere are emotional yi such as liking and disliking, Husserl\u27s phenomenology on emotional intentionality will be used in this article. The emotional intentionality is the unity of emotional noeses and valued noemata. For Wang, ge-wu is to change a wu improperly valued into a proper one, which is the same process of rectifying an immoral yi into a moral one

MEN’S OPPRESSION IN PEARL S. BUCK’S THE GOOD EARTH

Abstract Oppression is the element of “press” that in any condition cannot be mentioned as the correct behavior. Wang Lung and other men characters in Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth proves the oppression that men sometimes do. The common thing in this novel is men oppress the women, it is because men is a privilege group and has “something” that more than women and the worst thing the society seems approves the norms and stereotype that encourages the oppression. This thesis is aimed to depict the men’s oppression in this novel and some ways of the female characters in surviving from the oppression. The study applies descriptive analysis method, the concept of oppression and the theory of patriarchy and radical feminism by several experts. The theories and concept are well applied to reveal the statement of the problems. Wang Lung, in oppressing some female characters in the novel applies the three forms of Young’s explanation about oppression. There are exploitation, marginalization and powerlessness. Those are makes O’lan has some changes in her life. However the Old Lord and the cousin of Wang lung also do the oppression but not too explained well. Then the female characters have some ways to face the oppression. O’lan chooses to be silent, depicts herself and other women as the slave and always being afraid of Wang Lung. Other women characters also proves the changes that they face to survive from the oppression. Keywords: oppression, patriarchy in China, privilege, men and women.     Abstrak Penindasan adalah bagian dari kata “tekan” yang bilamanapun tidak bisa dikatakan sebagai tindakan yang dibenarkan. Penindasan tersebut dibuktikan oleh Wang Lung dan karakter laki-laki lainnya dalam novel The Good Earth karya Pearl S. Buck bahwa laki-laki melakukan penindasan. Hal yang lumrah dalam novel ini adalah laki-laki menindas perempuan yang dikarenakan laki-laki merupakan sebuah kelompok yang diistimewakan dan memiliki “sesuatu” yang lebih dibandingkan dengan perempuan, dan buruknya lagi masyarakat seakan-akan sepakat terhadap norma-norma dan stereotipe yang mendukung penindasan tersebut. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan penindasan oleh kaum laki-laki dalam novel ini dan beberapa cara yang dilakukan oleh tokoh perempuan untuk bertahan dari penindasan tersebut. Skripsi ini mengaplikasikan metode analisis secara deskripsi, konsep dari penindasan itu sendiri dan teori patriarki serta feminis radikal dari beberapa ahli. Teori dan konsep tersebut digunakan untuk mengungkap masalah-masalah dalam skripsi ini. Wang Lung, ketika menindas beberapa tokoh perempuan dalam novel ini melakukan tiga macam bentuk dari penindasan itu sendiri seperti yang dijelaskan oleh Young tentang penindasan, yaitu eksploitasi, marginalisasi, dan memanfaatkan kelemahan. Hal-hal tersebut membuat O’lan menemui perubahan-perubahan dalam hidupnya. Selanjutnya Penguasa yang sudah lanjut usia dan sepupu dari Wang Lung juga melakukan penindasan tapi tidak terlalu dijelaskan sejeals Wang Lung. Kemudian tokoh-tokoh perempuannya mempunyai beberapa cara untuk menghadapi penindasan tersebut. O’lan memilih untuk diam saja, menganggap dirinya danp erempuan lainnya sebagai budak laki-laki serta selalu tkaut terhadap Wang Lung. On Endogenous Fissility of Argillites within Carbonous Deposits Of Donbass

Based on direct numerical simulations of forced turbulence, shear turbulence, decaying turbulence, a turbulent channel flow as well as a Kolmogorov flow with Taylor-based Reynolds numbers Reλ between 69 and 295, the normalized probability density function of the length distribution P(l) of dissipation elements, the conditional mean scalar difference Δkl at the extreme points as well as the scaling of the two-point velocity difference along gradient trajectories Δun are studied. Using the field of the instantaneous turbulent kinetic energy k as a scalar, we find good agreement between the model equation for P(l) as proposed by Wang and Peters (2008 J. Fluid Mech. 608 113–38) and the results obtained in the different direct numerical simulation cases. This confirms the independence of the model solution from both the Reynolds number and the type of turbulent flow, so that it can be considered universally valid. In addition, we show a 2/3 scaling for the mean conditional scalar difference. In the second part of the paper, we examine the scaling of the conditional two-point velocity difference along gradient trajectories. In particular, we compare the linear s/τ scaling, where τ denotes an integral time scale and s the separation arclength along a gradient trajectory in the inertial range as derived by Wang (2009 Phys. Rev. E 79 046325) with the sa∞ scaling, where a∞ denotes the asymptotic value of the conditional mean strain rate of large dissipation elements

Series coupled resonant tunneling diode oscillators for terahertz applications

A series of resonant tunneling diode oscillators with frequencies up to W-band and output power around one milliwatt are presented. To our knowledge, the 75.2 GHz RTD oscillator with -0.2 dBm output power is the highest power reported. The technique demonstrated here shows the great potential to scale up the design to terahertz frequencies.
