    Towards Distributed Convoy Pattern Mining

    Mining movement data to reveal interesting behavioral patterns has gained attention in recent years. One such pattern is the convoy pattern which consists of at least m objects moving together for at least k consecutive time instants where m and k are user-defined parameters. Existing algorithms for detecting convoy patterns, however do not scale to real-life dataset sizes. Therefore a distributed algorithm for convoy mining is inevitable. In this paper, we discuss the problem of convoy mining and analyze different data partitioning strategies to pave the way for a generic distributed convoy pattern mining algorithm.Comment: SIGSPATIAL'15 November 03-06, 2015, Bellevue, WA, US

    Pulsars in FIRST Observations

    We identified 16 pulsars from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) at 1.4 GHz. Their positions and total flux densities are extracted from the FIRST catalog. Comparing the source positions with those in the PSRcatalog, we obtained better determined positions of PSRs J1022+1001, J1518+4904, J1652+2651, and proper motion upper limits of another three pulsars PSRs J0751+1807, J1012+5307, J1640+2224. Proper motions of the other 10 pulsars are consistent with the values in the catalog.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, submited to CJA

    Exact solution of a model of qubit dephasing due to telegraph noise

    We present a general and exact formalism for finding the evolution of a quantum system subject to external telegraph noise. The various qubit decoherence rates are determined by the eigenvalues of a transfer matrix. The formalism can be applied to a qubit subject to an arbitrary combination of dephasing and relaxational telegraph noise, in contrast to existing non-perturbative methods that treat only one or the other of these limits. We present 3 applications: 1) We obtain the full qubit dynamics on time scales short compared with the enviromental correlation times. In the strong coupling cases this reveals unexpected oscillations and induced magnetization components; 2) We find in strong coupling case strong violations of the widely used relation 1/T2_2 = 1/2T1_1 + 1/TÏ•_{\phi}, which is a result of perturbation theory; 3) We discuss the effects of bang-bang and spin-echo controls of the qubit dynamics in general settings of the telegraph noises. %The result shows that these methods are not very effective in %reducing decoherence arising from a single telegraph noise. Finally, we discuss the extension of the method to the cases of many telegraph noise sources and multiple qubits.     Development of a finite element musculoskeletal model with the ability to predict contractions of three-dimensional muscles

    Representation of realistic muscle geometries is needed for systematic biomechanical simulation of musculoskeletal systems. Most of the previous musculoskeletal models are based on multibody dynamics simulation with muscles simplified as one-dimensional (1D) line-segments without accounting for the large muscle attachment areas, spatial fibre alignment within muscles and contact and wrapping between muscles and surrounding tissues. In previous musculoskeletal models with three-dimensional (3D) muscles, contractions of muscles were among the inputs rather than calculated, which hampers the predictive capability of these models. To address these issues, a finite element musculoskeletal model with the ability to predict contractions of 3D muscles was developed. Muscles with realistic 3D geometry, spatial muscle fibre alignment and muscle-muscle and muscle-bone interactions were accounted for. Active contractile stresses of the 3D muscles were determined through an efficient optimization approach based on the measured kinematics of the lower extremity and ground force during gait. This model also provided stresses and strains of muscles and contact mechanics of the muscle-muscle and muscle-bone interactions. The total contact force of the knee predicted by the model corresponded well to the in vivo measurement. Contact and wrapping between muscles and surrounding tissues were evident, demonstrating the need to consider 3D contact models of muscles. This modelling framework serves as the methodological basis for developing musculoskeletal modelling systems in finite element method incorporating 3D deformable contact models of muscles, joints, ligaments and bones

    Strong decays of heavy baryons in Bethe-Salpeter formalism

    In this paper we study the properties of diquarks (composed of uu and/or dd quarks) in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism under the covariant instantaneous approximation. We calculate their BS wave functions and study their effective interaction with the pion. Using the effective coupling constant among the diquarks and the pion, in the heavy quark limit mQ→∞m_Q\to\infty, we calculate the decay widths of ΣQ(∗)\Sigma_Q^{(*)} (Q=c,bQ=c,b) in the BS formalism under the covariant instantaneous approximation and then give predictions of the decay widths Γ(Σb(∗)→Λb+π)\Gamma(\Sigma_b^{(*)}\to\Lambda_b+\pi).Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure, LaTex2e, typos correcte

    Entangling two distant nanocavities via a waveguide

    In this paper, we investigate the generation of continuous variable entanglement between two spatially-separate nanocavities mediated by a coupled resonator optical waveguide in photonic crystals. By solving the exact dynamics of the cavity system coupled to the waveguide, the entanglement and purity of the two-mode cavity state are discussed in detail for the initially separated squeezing inputs. It is found that the stable and pure entangled state of the two distant nanocavities can be achieved with the requirement of only a weak cavity-waveguide coupling when the cavities are resonant with the band center of the waveguide. The strong couplings between the cavities and the waveguide lead to the entanglement sudden death and sudden birth. When the frequencies of the cavities lie outside the band of the waveguide, the waveguide-induced cross frequency shift between the cavities can optimize the achievable entanglement. It is also shown that the entanglement can be easily manipulated through the changes of the cavity frequencies within the waveguide band.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Modelo de cálculo del rendimiento a compresión y capacidad de carga de columnas con pequeñas excentricidades reforzadas con mortero reforzado con textiles (TRM)

    To study the compression performance of TRM-strengthened columns with small eccentricities, a total of 9 reinforced concrete (RC) columns with end corbels were subjected to compression testing. The test parameters are as follows: the number of textile layers, the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) short-cut fiber volume fraction. The experimental results indicated that, compared to the control, columns with three layers of textile exhibited an approximately 10.66% increase in the bearing capacity. However, the effect increased only slightly when the number of textile layers increased to 4. Besides, the effect was improved with the increase in the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and PVA fiber volume fraction. Finally, based on laboratory tests and related research results, a model for calculating normal section bearing capacity of TRM-strengthened columns with small eccentricities was presented. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental data demonstrated the applicability of the proposed model.En este trabajo se estudió el rendimiento a compresión de columnas reforzadas con TRM con pequeñas excentricidades, y para ello, se sometieron a pruebas de compresión a nueve columnas de hormigón armado (RC) con ménsulas finales. Los parámetros estudiados fueron: el número de capas textiles, la relación de refuerzo longitudinal y la fracción en volumen de fibras cortas de alcohol polivinílico (PVA). Los resultados experimentales indicaron que, en comparación con el control, las columnas con tres capas de textiles mostraron un aumento de aproximadamente el 10,66% en la capacidad de carga. Sin embargo, el aumento fue ligero cuando el número de capas textiles aumentó a cuatro. Además, el efecto mejoró con el aumento en la proporción de refuerzo longitudinal y la fracción en volumen de fibras de PVA. Finalmente, basándonos en las pruebas de laboratorio y resultados de investigación previos, se presentó un modelo para calcular la capacidad de carga de la sección normal de columnas reforzadas con TRM con pequeñas excentricidades. Una comparación de los datos teóricos y experimentales demostró la aplicabilidad del modelo propuesto

    Insights into pneumococcal pneumonia using lung aspirates and nasopharyngeal swabs collected from pneumonia patients in The Gambia.

    We investigated the pathogenesis of pneumococcal pneumonia using clinical specimens collected for pneumonia surveillance in The Gambia. Lung aspirates and nasopharyngeal swabs from 31 patients were examined by culture, qPCR, whole genome sequencing, serotyping, and reverse transcription qPCR. Five lung aspirates cultured pneumococci, with a matching strain identified in the nasopharynx. Three virulence genes including ply (pneumolysin) were upregulated >20-fold in the lung compared with the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal pneumococcal density was higher in pediatric pneumonia patients compared with controls (p <0.0001). Findings suggest that changes in pneumococcal gene expression occurring in the lung environment may be important in pathogenesis
