Pulse-code technique of controlling process variable of frequency converter in induction heating device
The technique of pulse-code control of frequency converter process variable to install induction heating is suggested. The basic analytical relationships for calculation of control characteristics of the technique suggested at constant resistance of converter load are presented. Using the given method both loss power at switching power interconnecting device and mass-size parameters are shown to decrease significantly, whereas frequency converter efficiency increases
Compressing Random Microstructures via Stochastic Wang Tilings
This paper presents a stochastic Wang tiling based technique to compress or
reconstruct disordered microstructures on the basis of given spatial
statistics. Unlike the existing approaches based on a single unit cell, it
utilizes a finite set of tiles assembled by a stochastic tiling algorithm,
thereby allowing to accurately reproduce long-range orientation orders in a
computationally efficient manner. Although the basic features of the method are
demonstrated for a two-dimensional particulate suspension, the present

Microstructural enrichment functions based on stochastic Wang tilings
This paper presents an approach to constructing microstructural enrichment
functions to local fields in non-periodic heterogeneous materials with
applications in Partition of Unity and Hybrid Finite Element schemes. It is
based on a concept of aperiodic tilings by the Wang tiles, designed to produce
microstructures morphologically similar to original media and enrichment
functions that satisfy the underlying governing equations. An appealing feature
of this approach is that the enrichment functions are defined only on a small
set of square tiles and extended to larger domains by an inexpensive stochastic
tiling algorithm in a non-periodic manner. Feasibility of the proposed
methodology is demonstrated on constructions of stress enrichment functions for

Mitochondrial encephalocardio-myopathy with early neonatal onset due to TMEM70 mutation
Objective Mitochondrial disturbances of energy-generating systems in childhood are a heterogeneous group of disorders. The aim of this multi-site survey was to characterise the natural course of a novel mitochondrial disease with ATP synthase deficiency and mutation in the TMEM70 gene.
Methods Retrospective clinical data and metabolic profiles were collected and evaluated in 25 patients (14 boys, 11 girls) from seven European countries with a c. 317-2A -> G mutation in the TMEM70 gene.
Results Severe muscular hypotonia (in 92% of newborns), apnoic spells (92%), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCMP; 76%) and profound lactic acidosis (lactate 5-36 mmol/l; 92%) with hyperammonaemia (100-520 mu mol/l; 86%) were present from birth. Ten patients died within the first 6 weeks of life. Most patients surviving the neonatal period had persisting muscular hypotonia and developed psychomotor delay. HCMP was non-progressive and even disappeared in some children. Hypospadia was present in 54% of the boys and cryptorchidism in 67%. Increased excretion of lactate and 3-methylglutaconic acid (3-MGC) was observed in all patients. In four surviving patients, life-threatening hyperammonaemia occurred during childhood, triggered by acute gastroenteritis and prolonged fasting.
Conclusions ATP synthase deficiency with mutation in TMEM70 should be considered in the diagnosis and management of critically ill neonates with early neonatal onset of muscular hypotonia, HCMP and hypospadias in boys accompanied by lactic acidosis, hyperammonaemia and 3-MGC-uria. However, phenotype severity may vary significantly. The disease occurs frequently in the Roma population and molecular-genetic analysis of the TMEM70 gene is sufficient for diagnosis without need of muscle biopsy in affected children
Minimal Model for Sand Dunes
We propose a minimal model for aeolian sand dunes. It combines an analytical
description of the turbulent wind velocity field above the dune with a
continuum saltation model that allows for saturation transients in the sand
flux. The model provides a qualitative understanding of important features of
real dunes, such as their longitudinal shape and aspect ratio, the formation of
a slip face, the breaking of scale invariance, and the existence of a minimum

Clinical significance of left atrial anatomic abnormalities identified by cardiac computed tomography
Purpose: The clinical significance of newly identified left atrial anatomic abnormalities (LAAA)— accessory appendages, diverticula, septal pouches—by multidetector CT (MDCT) remains unclear. Similar anatomical outpouchings, i.e., the left atrial appendage, have been associated with cardioembolisms and arrhythmia. To test the hypothesis that LAAA are also associated with increased risk of these events, we performed a retrospective analysis to examine the association of LAAA in patients undergoing CT with embolic events and arrhythmia.
Methods: 242 patients (mean age 56 SD 12 years, 41% female) were selected who had CT coronary angiography performed with 64-row MDCT between 2007 and 2012 if complete clinical history records were available. CT images were independently reviewed for the presence of LAAA. Association of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or transient ischemic attack (TIA), atrial fibrillation, and palpitations to LAAA was calculated using odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) and Fisher’s exact test.
Results: After adjusting for age, sex, hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes via multiple logistic regression, patients with accessory appendages are more likely to have reported palpitations (OR: 1.80; CI: 1.03 - 3.16). Patients with diverticula and septal pouches are significantly older than those without these abnormalities (p = 0.01 and p = 0.02, respectively). Septal pouches are associated with diabetes (OR: 2.29; 95%CI: 1.15 - 4.54).
Conclusions: Accessory left atrial appendages are associated with palpitations. Patients with septal pouches and diverticula are significantly older than those patients without these anatomic abnormalities, suggesting age dependency of these findings. None of these anatomic abnormalities were associated with thromboembolic events after adjustment for potentially confounding comorbidities
Entanglement and Timing-Based Mechanisms in the Coherent Control of Scattering Processes
The coherent control of scattering processes is considered, with electron
impact dissociation of H used as an example. The physical mechanism
underlying coherently controlled stationary state scattering is exposed by
analyzing a control scenario that relies on previously established entanglement
requirements between the scattering partners. Specifically, initial state
entanglement assures that all collisions in the scattering volume yield the
desirable scattering configuration. Scattering is controlled by preparing the
particular internal state wave function that leads to the favored collisional
configuration in the collision volume. This insight allows coherent control to
be extended to the case of time-dependent scattering. Specifically, we identify
reactive scattering scenarios using incident wave packets of translational
motion where coherent control is operational and initial state entanglement is
unnecessary. Both the stationary and time-dependent scenarios incorporate
extended coherence features, making them physically distinct. From a
theoretical point of view, this work represents a large step forward in the
qualitative understanding of coherently controlled reactive scattering. From an
experimental viewpoint, it offers an alternative to entanglement-based control
schemes. However, both methods present significant challenges to existing
experimental technologies
Magnetophonon resonance in photoluminescence excitation spectra of magnetoexcitons in GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattice
Strong increase in the intensity of the peaks of excited magneto-exciton (ME)
states in the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra recorded for the
ground heavy-hole magneto-excitons (of the 1sHH type) has been found in a
GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice in strong magnetic field B applied normal to the
sample layers. While varying B the intensities of the PLE peaks have been
measured as functions of energy separation between excited ME peaks
and the ground state of the system. The resonance profiles have been found to
have maxima at close to the energy of the GaAs LO-phonon.
However, the value of depends on quantum numbers of the
excited ME state. The revealed very low quantum efficiency of the investigated
sample allows us to ascribe the observed resonance to the enhancement of the
non-radiative magneto-exciton relaxation rate arising due to LO-phonon
emission. The presented theoretical model, being in a good agreement with
experimental observations, provides a method to extract 1sHH magneto-exciton
``in-plane" dispersion from the dependence of on the
