We report the synthesis, and structural and physical properties of CaFe4As3 single crystals. Needle-like single crystals of CaFe4As3 were grown out of Sn flux and the compound adopts an orthorhombic structure as determined by X-ray diffraction measurements. Electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties indicate that the system undergoes two successive phase transitions occurring at TN1 ~ 90 K and TN2 ~ 26 K. At TN1, electrical resistivities (\rho(b) and \rho(ac)) are enhanced while magnetic susceptibilities (\chi(b) and \chi(ac)) are reduced in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis, consistent with the scenario of antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave formation. At TN2, specific heat reveals a slope change, and \chi(ac) decreases sharply but \chi(b) has a clear jump before it decreases again with decreasing temperature. Remarkably, both \rho(b) and \rho(ac) decrease sharply with thermal hysteresis, indicating the first-order nature of the phase transition at TN2. At low temperatures, \rho(b) and \rho(ac) can be described by {\rho} = {\rho}0 + AT^\alpha ({\rho}0, A, and {\alpha} are constants). Interestingly, these constants vary with applied magnetic field. The ground state of CaFe4As3 is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to Physical Review

A staged approach with vincristine, adriamycin, and dexamethasone followed by bortezomib, thalidomide, and dexamethasone before autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma

Bortezomib-based regimens have significant activities in multiple myeloma (MM). In this study, we tested the efficacy of a total therapy with a staged approach where newly diagnosed MM patients received vincristine/adriamycin/dexamethsone (VAD). VAD-sensitive patients (≥75% paraprotein reduction) received autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT), whereas less VAD-sensitive patients (<75% paraprotein reduction) received bortezomib/thalidomide/dexamethasone (VTD) for further cytoreduction prior to auto-HSCT. On an intention-to-treat analysis, a progressive increase of complete remission (CR) rates was observed, with cumulative CR rates of 48% after HSCT. Seven patients progressed leading to three fatalities, of which two had central nervous system disease. The 3-year overall survival and event-free survival were 75.1% and 48.3%, respectively. Six patients developed oligoclonal reconstitution with new paraproteins. In the absence of anticoagulant prophylaxis, no patients developed deep vein thrombosis. The staged application of VAD+/–VTD/auto-HSCT resulted in an appreciable response rate and promising survivals. Our approach reduced the use of bortezomib without compromising the ultimate CR rate and is of financial significance for less affluent communities

T-cell receptor gene expression in tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes and peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire expression of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) from 19 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) biopsies was compared with those of lymphocytes from 18 control nasopharyngeal biopsies. mRNA was extracted from these lymphocytes and the cDNA transcribed. A panel of 18 V alpha- and 21 V beta-specific primers was used to detect the TCR gene use from cDNA. The use of V alpha and V beta genes was restricted in TILs compared with lymphocytes from biopsies. The frequencies of V alpha 2, V alpha 3, V alpha 9, V alpha 10, V alpha 11, V alpha 13, V alpha 14, V alpha 15, V beta 11, V beta 15 and V beta 20 were decreased and the frequencies of V alpha 10 [Pc = 0.04; relative risk (RR) = 0.05], V alpha 11 (Pc = 0.02; RR = 0.07), V alpha 13 (Pc = 0.002; RR = 0), V alpha 14 (Pc = 0.04; RR = 0.05), V beta 14 (Pc = 0.001; RR = 0.03) and V beta 20 (Pc = 0.001; RR = 0.03) remained significantly reduced after correction for the number of families typed. The frequency of V alpha 17 was higher in NPC biopsies than in NPC PBLs (P = 0.05), and the frequency of V beta 15 was lower in NPC biopsies than in NPC PBLs (P = 0.02). The frequencies of V alpha 17 and V alpha 18 in HLA-B46+ patients were significantly lower (P = 0.009; P = 0.044) than in B46+ controls. The results suggest that the restriction of TCR gene use in NPC patients may be important in NPC pathogenesis

General analysis of self-dual solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in (1+2) dimensions

The solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory are studied in (1+2) dimensions with the self-duality condition imposed on the Maxwell field. We give a closed form of the general solution which is determined by a single function having the physical meaning of the quasilocal angular momentum of the solution. This function completely determines the geometry of spacetime, also providing the direct computation of the conserved total mass and angular momentum of the configurations.Comment: 3 pages, REVTEX file, no figure

    Collapse of Randomly Self-Interacting Polymers

We use complete enumeration and Monte Carlo techniques to study self--avoiding walks with random nearest--neighbor interactions described by v0qiqjv_0q_iq_j, where qi=±1q_i=\pm1 is a quenched sequence of ``charges'' on the chain. For equal numbers of positive and negative charges (N+=NN_+=N_-), the polymer with v0>0v_0>0 undergoes a transition from self--avoiding behavior to a compact state at a temperature θ1.2v0\theta\approx1.2v_0. The collapse temperature θ(x)\theta(x) decreases with the asymmetry x=N+N/(N++N)x=|N_+-N_-|/(N_++N_-)Comment: 8 pages, TeX, 4 uuencoded postscript figures, MIT-CMT-
