Design for Low-Cost Country Sourcing: Motivation, Basic Principles and Design Guidelines
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityNot every product can be successfully sourced in low-cost countries. Disadvantageous cost structures or
extremely complex workpiece designs are the most frequent reasons for failures. A design that has been
tailored to low-cost country sourcing offers the possibility of increasing potentials while reducing risks and
costs at the same time. The wbk Institute of Production Science at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) developed
a new approach which ensures that the product design meets the requirements of the supplier. This paper
identifies the factors influencing the design, deduces basic principles and illustrates guidelines for an
adapted product design.Mori Seiki – The Machine Tool Compan
Triaxial Analytical Potential-Density Pairs for Galaxies
We present two triaxial analytical potential-density pairs that can be viewed
as generalized versions of the axisymmetric Miyamoto and Nagai and Satoh
galactic models. These potential-density pairs may be useful models for
galaxies with box-shaped bulges. The resulting mass density distributions are
everywhere non-negative and free from singularities. Also, a few numerically
calculated orbits for the Miyamoto and Nagai-like triaxial potential are
presented.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
A General Relativistic Model for the Gravitational Field of Active Galactic Nuclei Surrounded by a Disk
An exact but simple general relativistic model for the gravitational field of
active galactic nuclei is constructed, based on the superposition in Weyl
coordinates of a black hole, a Chazy-Curzon disk and two rods, which represent
matter jets. The influence of the rods on the matter properties of the disk and
on its stability is examined. We find that in general they contribute to
destabilize the disk. Also the oscillation frequencies for perturbed circular
geodesics on the disk are computed, and some geodesic orbits for the superposed
metric are numerically calculated.Comment: 24 pages, LATEX. Phys. Rev. D (in press
Inhomogeneous Shadowing Effects on J/\psi Production in dA Collisions
We study the effect of spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous shadowing on
production in deuterium-nucleus collisions. We discuss how the
shadowing and its spatial dependence may be measured by comparing central and
peripheral collisions. These event classes may be selected by using gray
protons from heavy ion breakup and events where the proton or neutron in the
deuterium does not interact. We find that inhomogenous shadowing has a
significant effect on central collisions, larger than is observed in
central collisions. The inhomogeneity may be measured by comparing the
rapidity dependence of production in central and peripheral
collisions. Results are presented for Au collisions at
GeV and Pb collisions at TeV.Comment: 10 pgs with 3 figure
Labor Rights in the Generalized System of Preferences: A 20-Year Review
[Excerpt]In the fall of 1982, a small group of labor, religious, and human rights activists began charting a new course for human rights and workers\u27 rights in American trade policy. The principles of these labor rights advocates were straightforward:
1. No country should attract investment or gain an edge in international trade by violating workers\u27 rights;
2. No company operating in global trade should gain a competitive edge by violating workers\u27 rights; and,
3. Workers have a right to demand protection for labor rights in the international trade system, and to have laws to accomplish it.
The coalition that took shape 20 years ago made a labor rights amendment to the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), the chief policy vehicle in U.S. law to promote these principles. This article reviews 20 years\u27 experience with the GSP labor rights clause
Comments Concerning Proposed United States-Andean Free Trade Agreement
Vogt presents two cases of US multinational corporations that benefit from violence against unionists in Colombia. He argues that a trade agreement with Colombia would normalize the violence instead of fight against it
