    SGR J1550–5418 Bursts Detected with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor during its Most Prolific Activity

    We have performed detailed temporal and time-integrated spectral analysis of 286 bursts from SGR J1550–5418 detected with the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) in 2009 January, resulting in the largest uniform sample of temporal and spectral properties of SGR J1550–5418 bursts. We have used the combination of broadband and high time-resolution data provided with GBM to perform statistical studies for the source properties. We determine the durations, emission times, duty cycles, and rise times for all bursts, and find that they are typical of SGR bursts. We explore various models in our spectral analysis, and conclude that the spectra of SGR J1550–5418 bursts in the 8-200 keV band are equally well described by optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung (OTTB), a power law (PL) with an exponential cutoff (Comptonized model), and two blackbody (BB) functions (BB+BB). In the spectral fits with the Comptonized model, we find a mean PL index of –0.92, close to the OTTB index of –1. We show that there is an anti-correlation between the Comptonized E_(peak) and the burst fluence and average flux. For the BB+BB fits, we find that the fluences and emission areas of the two BB functions are correlated. The low-temperature BB has an emission area comparable to the neutron star surface area, independent of the temperature, while the high-temperature BB has a much smaller area and shows an anti-correlation between emission area and temperature. We compare the properties of these bursts with bursts observed from other SGR sources during extreme activations, and discuss the implications of our results in the context of magnetar burst models

    Exploring the temporally resolved electron density evolution in EUV induced plasmas

    We measured for the first time the electron density in an Extreme Ultra-Violet induced plasma. This is achieved in a low-pressure argon plasma by using a method called microwave cavity resonance spectroscopy. The measured electron density just after the EUV pulse is 2.6⋅10162.6\cdot10^{16} m−3^{-3}. This is in good agreement with a theoretical prediction from photo ionization, which yields a density of 4.5⋅10164.5\cdot10^{16} m−3^{-3}. After the EUV pulse the density slightly increase due to electron impact ionization. The plasma (i.e. electron density) decays in tens of microseconds.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    New economic geography, empirics, and regional policy

    There are doubts about the effectiveness of regional policy. Well known are the fruitless attempts of Italy to bridge the gap between the Mezzogiorno and the North, of Germany to bridge the gap between the Neue Länder and the West, and of the European Commission to reduce regional disparities in general. We validate one explanation: agglomeration advantages lock business activity in relatively prosperous core regions, even though wages – and thus production costs – tend to be higher there. We set off from the ‘New Economic Geography’, a set of general equilibrium models that focus on location choice. Theory, descriptive statistics, and econometric analysis support the conclusion that the European economic geography is characterized by a network of local and stable core periphery systems. This implies that disparities between core regions and their peripheries at a (sub) provincial level of regional aggregation are with us to stay, as regional policy targeted on peripheries tends to be insufficient to counter centripetal market forces. Moreover, even if such policy has an impact, it may be adverse, as core regions may benefit disproportionately in the long run. A focus of regional policy on local agglomerations, which have a realistic chance to hold on to economic activity, is therefore desirable.

    Measuring the electron density in an Extreme Ultra-Violet generated plasma

    In order to meet the demand of increasing computer speed and memory capacity, industries are striving to reduce the size of computer chips. This miniaturization of computer chips can be achieved by reducing the wavelength in lithography machines to Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV, 92 eV). The low-pressure (around 1 Pa) transparent background gas (e.g. HÂŹ2 and He) in the lithography machine is partially ionized by the absorption of EUV photons. The study of these low-density (1015 m-3) pulsed plasmas is interesting and experimentally challenging. Two different diagnostics are investigated to determine the electron density in these EUV-generated plasmas: coherent microwave scattering (CMS) and microwave cavity resonance spectroscopy (MCRS). CMS is based on the scattering of microwaves off the plasma, the scattered power has a resonance at the plasma frequency. In MCRS measurements the resonance frequency in a cavity is determined, this frequency depends on the electron density in the cavity. These two diagnostics are tested on a simulation plasma with similar dimensions and density as the EUV plasma. The results of MCRS on the simulation plasma show a detection limit of 1014 m-3 and a time-resolution of 16 ns. Currently a new setup is built to measure the electron density in the EUV plasma

    Corporate tax harmonization in the EU

    This paper explores the economic consequences of proposed EU reforms for a common consolidated corporate tax base. The reforms replace separate accounting with formula apportionment as a way to allocate corporate tax bases across countries. To assess the economic implications, we use a numerical CGE model for Europe. It encompasses several decision margins of firms,such as marginal investment, FDI decisions, and multinational profit shifting. The simulations suggest that consolidation does not yield substantial welfare gains for Europe. The variation of effects across countries is large and depends on the choice of the apportionment formula. Consolidation with formula apportionment does not weaken incentives for tax competition. Tax competition instead offers a rationale for rate harmonisation, in addition to base harmonisation.

In this research the plasma accumulation is studied in an EUV-generated plasma in argon. The EUV source generates EUV pulses with a repetition frequency between 500 Hz and 10 kHz. The accumulation of plasma is clearly observed at frequencies above 1 kHz

    Voltammetric Analysis of Platinum Group Metals Using a Bismuth-Silver Bimetallic Nanoparticles Sensor

    This study dealt with the development of a bismuth-silver bimetallic nanosensor for differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry of platinum group metals (PGMs) in environmental samples. The nanosensor was fabricated by drop coating a thin bismuth-silver bimetallic film onto the active area of the screen-printed carbon electrodes. Optimization parameters such as pH, dimethylglyoxime (DMG) concentration, deposition potential and deposition time, stability test and interferences were also studied. In 0.2 M acetate buffer (pH = 4.7) solution and DMG as the chelating agent, the reduction signal for PGMs ranged from 0.2 to 1.0 ng L−1. In the study of possible interferences, the results have shown that Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Na+, SO42−, and PO43− do not interfere with Pd(II), Pt(II), and Rh(III) in the presence of DMG with sodium acetate buffer as the supporting electrolyte solution. The limit of detection for Pd(II), Pt(II), and Rh(III) was found to be 0.07, 0.06 and 0.2 ng L−1, respectively. Good precision for the sensor application was obtained with a reproducibility of 7.58% for Pd(II), 6.31% for Pt(II), and 5.37% for Rh(III) (n = 10)

    The prognostic value of the hamstring outcome score to predict the risk of hamstring injuries

    OBJECTIVES: Hamstring injuries are common among soccer players. The hamstring outcome score (HaOS) might be useful to identify amateur players at risk of hamstring injury. Therefore the aims of this study were: To determine the association between the HaOS and prior and new hamstring injuries in amateur soccer players, and to determine the prognostic value of the HaOS for identifying players with or without previous hamstring injuries at risk of future injury. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: HaOS scores and information about previous injuries were collected at baseline and new injuries were prospectively registered during a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 400 amateur soccer players. Analysis of variance and t-tests were used to determine the association between the HaOS and previous and new hamstring injury, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated the prognostic value of the HaOS for predicting new hamstring injuries. RESULTS: Analysis of data of 356 players indicated that lower HaOS scores were associated with more previous hamstring injuries (F=17.4; p=0.000) and that players with lower HaOS scores sustained more new hamstring injuries (T=3.59, df=67.23, p=0.001). With a conventional HaOS score cut-off of 80%, logistic regression models yielded a probability of hamstring injuries of 11%, 18%, and 28% for players with 0,1, or 2 hamstring injuries in the previous season, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The HaOS is associated with previous and future hamstring injury and might be a useful tool to provide players with insight into their risk of sustaining a new hamstring injury risk when used in combination with previous injuries
