On the Orbital Period of the Intermediate Polar 1WGA J1958.2+3232
Recently, Norton et al. 2002, on the basis of multiwavelength photometry of
1WGA J1958.2+3232, argued that the -1 day alias of the strongest peak in the
power spectrum is the true orbital period of the system, casting doubts on the
period estimated by Zharikov et al. 2001. We re-analyzed this system using our
photometric and spectroscopic data along with the data kindly provided by Andy
Norton and confirm our previous finding. After refining our analysis we find
that the true orbital period of this binary system is 4.35h.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
Resolved stellar population of distant galaxies in the ELT era
The expected imaging capabilities of future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs)
will offer the unique possibility to investigate the stellar population of
distant galaxies from the photometry of the stars in very crowded fields. Using
simulated images and photometric analysis we explore here two representative
science cases aimed at recovering the characteristics of the stellar
populations in the inner regions of distant galaxies. Specifically: case A) at
the center of the disk of a giant spiral in the Centaurus Group, (mu B~21,
distance of 4.6 Mpc); and, case B) at half of the effective radius of a giant
elliptical in the Virgo Cluster (mu~19.5, distance of 18 Mpc). We generate
synthetic frames by distributing model stellar populations and adopting a
representative instrumental set up, i.e. a 42 m Telescope operating close to
the diffraction limit. The effect of crowding is discussed in detail showing
how stars are measured preferentially brighter than they are as the confusion
limit is approached. We find that (i) accurate photometry (sigma~0.1,
completeness >90%) can be obtained for case B) down to I~28.5, J~27.5 allowing
us to recover the stellar metallicity distribution in the inner regions of
ellipticals in Virgo to within ~0.1 dex; (ii) the same photometric accuracy
holds for the science case A) down to J~28.0, K~27.0, enabling to reconstruct
of the star formation history up to the Hubble time via simple star counts in
diagnostic boxes. For this latter case we discuss the possibility of deriving
more detailed information on the star formation history from the analysis of
their Horizontal Branch stars. We show that the combined features of high
sensitivity and angular resolution of ELTs may open a new era for our knowledge
of the stellar content of galaxies of different morphological type up to the
distance of the Virgo cluster.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, PASP accepted in pubblicatio
The nuclear to host galaxy relation of high redshift quasars
We present near-infrared imaging with ESO VLT+ISAAC of the host galaxies of
low luminosity quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2, aimed at investigating
the relationship between the nuclear and host galaxy luminosities at high
redshift. This work complements our previous study to trace the cosmological
evolution of the host galaxies of high luminosity quasars (Falomo et al. 2004).
The new sample includes 15 low luminosity quasars, nine radio-loud (RLQ) and
six radio-quiet (RQQ). They have similar distribution of redshift and optical
luminosity, and together with the high luminosity quasars they cover a large
range (~4 mag) of the quasar luminosity function. The host galaxies of both
types of quasars are in the range of massive inactive ellipticals between L*
and 10 L*. RLQ hosts are systematically more luminous than RQQ hosts by a
factor of ~2. This difference is similar to that found for the high luminosity
quasars. This luminosity gap appears to be independent of the rest-frame U-band
luminosity but clearly correlated with the rest-frame R-band luminosity. The
color difference between the RQQs and the RLQs is likely a combination of an
intrinsic difference in the strength of the thermal and nonthermal components
in the SEDs of RLQs and RQQs, and a selection effect due to internal dust
extinction. For the combined set of quasars, we find a reasonable correlation
between the nuclear and the host luminosities. This correlation is less
apparent for RQQs than for RLQs. If the R-band luminosity is representative of
the bolometric luminosity, and assuming that the host luminosity is
proportional to the black hole mass, as observed in nearby massive spheroids,
quasars emit with a relatively narrow range of power with respect to their
Eddington luminosity and with the same distribution for RLQs and RQQs.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 24 pages, 4 figure
MAD Adaptive Optics Imaging of High Luminosity Quasars: A Pilot Project
We present near-IR images of five luminous quasars at z~2 and one at z~4
obtained with an experimental adaptive optics instrument at the ESO Very Large
Telescope. The observations are part of a program aimed at demonstrating the
capabilities of multi-conjugated adaptive optics imaging combined with the use
of natural guide stars for high spatial resolution studies on large telescopes.
The observations were mostly obtained under poor seeing conditions but in two
cases. In spite of these non optimal conditions, the resulting images of point
sources have cores of FWHM ~0.2 arcsec. We are able to characterize the host
galaxy properties for 2 sources and set stringent upper limits to the galaxy
luminosity for the others. We also report on the expected capabilities for
investigating the host galaxies of distant quasars with adaptive optics systems
coupled with future Extremely Large Telescopes. Detailed simulations show that
it will be possible to characterize compact (2-3 kpc) quasar host galaxies for
QSOs at z = 2 with nucleus K-magnitude spanning from 15 to 20 (corresponding to
absolute magnitude -31 to -26) and host galaxies that are 4 mag fainter than
their nuclei.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for pubblication in The Astronomical

On the radio and NIR jet of PKS 2155-304 and its close environment
PKS 2155-304 is one of the brightest BL Lac object in the sky and a very well
studied target from radio to TeV bands. We report on high-resolution (~ 0.12
arcsec) direct imaging of the field of PKS 2155-304 using adaptive optics
near-IR observations in J and Ks bands obtained with the ESO multi-conjugate
adaptive optic demonstrator (MAD) at the Very Large Telescope. These data are
complemented with archival VLA images at various frequencies to investigate the
properties of the close environment of the source. We characterized the faint
galaxies that form the poor group associated to the target. No radio emission
is present for these galaxies, while an old radio jet at ~ 20 kpc from the
nucleus of PKS 2155-304 and a jet-like structure of ~ 2 kpc (~ 1 arcsec) in the
eastern direction are revealed. No counterparts of these radio jets are found
in the NIR or in archival Chandra observations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical
