Quantized spin excitations in a ferromagnetic microstrip from microwave photovoltage measurements
Quantized spin excitations in a single ferromagnetic microstrip have been
measured using the microwave photovoltage technique. Several kinds of spin wave
modes due to different contributions of the dipole-dipole and the exchange
interactions are observed. Among them are a series of distinct dipole-exchange
spin wave modes, which allow us to determine precisely the subtle spin boundary
condition. A comprehensive picture for quantized spin excitations in a
ferromagnet with finite size is thereby established. The dispersions of the
quantized spin wave modes have two different branches separated by the

Controlling chaos in spatially extended beam-plasma system by the continuous delayed feedback
In present paper we discuss the control of complex spatio-temporal dynamics
in a {spatially extended} non-linear system (fluid model of Pierce diode) based
on the concepts of controlling chaos in the systems with few degrees of
freedom. A presented method is connected with stabilization of unstable
homogeneous equilibrium state and the unstable spatio-temporal periodical
states analogous to unstable periodic orbits of chaotic dynamics of the systems
with few degrees of freedom. We show that this method is effective and allows
to achieve desired regular dynamics chosen from a number of possible in the

Chaotic synchronization of coupled electron-wave systems with backward waves
The chaotic synchronization of two electron-wave media with interacting
backward waves and cubic phase nonlinearity is investigated in the paper. To
detect the chaotic synchronization regime we use a new approach, the so-called
time scale synchronization [Chaos, 14 (3) 603-610 (2004)]. This approach is
based on the consideration of the infinite set of chaotic signals' phases
introduced by means of continuous wavelet transform. The complex space-time
dynamics of the active media and mechanisms of the time scale synchronization

Factors That Predict Short-term Complication Rates After Total Hip Arthroplasty
Background: There remains uncertainty regarding the relative importance of patient factors such as comorbidity and provider factors such as hospital volume in predicting complication rates after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Purpose: We therefore identified patient and provider factors predicting complications after THA. Methods: We reviewed discharge data from 138,399 patients undergoing primary THA in California from 1995 to 2005. The rate of complications during the first 90 days postoperatively (mortality, infection, dislocation, revision, perioperative fracture, neurologic injury, and thromboembolic disease) was regressed against a variety of independent variables, including patient factors (age, gender, race/ethnicity, income, Charlson comorbidity score) and provider variables (hospital volume, teaching status, rural location). Results: Compared with patients treated at high-volume hospitals (above the 20th percentile), patients treated at low-volume hospitals (below the 60th percentile) had a higher aggregate risk of having short-term complications (odds ratio, 2.00). A variety of patient factors also had associations with an increased risk of complications: increased Charlson comorbidity score, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, advanced age, male gender, and black race. Hispanic and Asian patients had lower risks of complications. Conclusions: Patient and provider characteristics affected the risk of a short-term complication after THA. These results may be useful for educating patients and anticipating perioperative risks of THA in different patient populations. Level of Evidence: Level II, prognostic study. Factors affecting the biology of Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), a parasitoid of spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii).
Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae is a wasp that parasitizes and host-feeds on pupae of the invasive spotted-wing drosophila (SWD, Drosophila suzukii). Few studies have addressed interactions between these two species and little is known about the potential of this parasitoid as a biocontrol agent of SWD and the different variables that may affect it. Here, we investigated the impact of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on life-history traits of P. vindemmiae. Both constant (entire adulthood) and limited (30 minutes) supplies of water + honey, honey, or host increased parasitoid survival compared to controls (water or fasting). Water + honey caused the highest parasitoid survivals (35?60 days), independent of supply period, sex, and host availability. Females were intrinsically more resistant to water- and honey-deprivation than males, and host-feeding elevated such resistance even higher. Constant honey supply (either with or without water) supported the highest host-killing capacities (= capacity to kill hosts) (ca. 600 SWD pupae/wasp). However, in young females (4?9 days old), the impact of honey availability (with or without water) was insignificant while water deprivation (either with or without honey) caused the highest host-killing potential. This indicates that although sugar becomes a critical nutritional resource as females age, young females depend more on water than sugar to reproduce. Neither water nor honey affected the sex ratio of young females, but when we considered the entire adulthood, the availability of honey caused the lowest proportion of females (0.50), independent of water availability. Neither water nor honey affected parasitoid emergence rate (0.97), independent of female age. Based on survival and host-killing capacity, we conclude that P. vindemmiae has a tremendous biocontrol potential against SWD. Both limited and constant supply of water, sugar, and host increase parasitoid survival, while constant supply of water and/or honey enhance its host-killing potential and decrease sex ratio depending on maternal age
Strong asymmetry of microwave absorption by bi-layer conducting ferromagnetic films in the microstrip-line based broadband ferromagnetic resonance
Peculiarities of ferromagnetic resonance response of conducting magnetic
bi-layer films of nanometric thicknesses excited by microstrip microwave
transducers have been studied theoretically. Strong asymmetry of the response
has been found. Depending on the order of layers with respect to the transducer
either the first higher-order standing spin wave mode, or the fundamental mode
shows the largest response.
Film conductivity and lowered symmetry of microwave fields of such
transducers are responsible for this behavior. Amplitude of which mode is
larger also depends on the driving frequency. This effect is explained as
shielding of the asymmetric transducer field by eddy currents in the films.
This shielding remains very efficient for films with thicknesses well below the
microwave skin depth. This effect may be useful for studying buried magnetic
interfaces and should be accounted for in future development of broadband
inductive ferromagnetic resonance methods.Comment: 21 Page, 4 figure
Excitation Theory for Space-Dispersive Active Media Waveguides
A unified electrodynamic approach to the guided-wave excitation theory is
generalized to the waveguiding structures containing a hypothetical
space-dispersive medium with drifting charge carriers possessing simultaneously
elastic, piezoelectric and magnetic properties. Substantial features of our
electrodynamic approach are: (i) the allowance for medium losses and (ii) the
separation of potential fields peculiar to the slow quasi-static waves. It is
shown that the orthogonal complementary fields appearing inside the external
source region are just associated with a contribution of the potential fields
inherent in exciting sources. Taking account of medium losses converts the
usual orthogonality relation into a novel form called the quasi-orthogonality
relation. It is found that the separation of potential fields reveals the fine
structure of interaction between the exciting sources and mode eigenfields: in
addition to the exciting currents interacting with the curl fields, the
exciting charges and the double charge (surface dipole) layers appear to
interact with the quasi-static potentials and the displacement currents,

Hypoglycemia-Related Hospitalizations and Mortality Among Patients With Diabetes Transitioning to Dialysis.
Rationale & objectiveDiabetic patients with declining kidney function are at heightened risk for hypoglycemia. We sought to determine whether hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations in the interval before dialysis therapy initiation are associated with post-end-stage renal disease (ESRD) mortality among incident patients with ESRD with diabetes.Study designObservational cohort study.Setting & participantsUS veterans from the national Veterans Affairs database with diabetes and chronic kidney disease transitioning to dialysis therapy from October 2007 to September 2011.ExposureHypoglycemia-related hospitalizations during the pre-ESRD period and antidiabetic medication regimens.OutcomeThe outcome of post-ESRD all-cause mortality was evaluated relative to pre-ESRD hypoglycemia. The outcome of pre-ESRD hypoglycemia-related hospitalization was evaluated relative to antidiabetic medication regimens.Analytic approachWe examined whether the occurrence and frequency of pre-ESRD hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations are associated with post-ESRD mortality using Cox regression models adjusted for case-mix covariates. In a subcohort of patients prescribed 0 to 2 oral antidiabetic drugs and/or insulin, we examined the 12 most commonly prescribed antidiabetic medication regimens and risk for pre-ESRD hypoglycemia-related hospitalization using logistic regression models adjusted for case-mix covariates.ResultsAmong 30,156 patients who met eligibility criteria, the occurrence of pre-ESRD hypoglycemia-related hospitalization(s) was associated with higher post-ESRD mortality risk: adjusted HR (aHR), 1.25; 95% CI, 1.17-1.34 (reference group: no hypoglycemia hospitalization). Increasing frequency of hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations was independently associated with incrementally higher mortality risk: aHRs of 1.21 (95% CI, 1.12-1.30), 1.47 (95% CI, 1.19-1.82), and 2.07 (95% CI, 1.46-2.95) for 1, 2, and 3 or more hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations, respectively (reference group: no hypoglycemia hospitalization). Compared with patients who were prescribed neither oral antidiabetic drugs nor insulin, medication regimens that included sulfonylureas and/or insulin were associated with higher risk for hypoglycemia.LimitationsResidual confounding cannot be excluded.ConclusionsAmong incident patients with ESRD with diabetes, a dose-dependent relationship between frequency of pre-ESRD hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations and post-ESRD mortality was observed. Further study of diabetic management strategies that prevent hypoglycemia as patients with chronic kidney disease transition to ESRD are warranted
1.3 mm Wavelength VLBI of Sagittarius A*: Detection of Time-Variable Emission on Event Horizon Scales
Sagittarius A*, the ~4 x 10^6 solar mass black hole candidate at the Galactic
Center, can be studied on Schwarzschild radius scales with (sub)millimeter
wavelength Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). We report on 1.3 mm
wavelength observations of Sgr A* using a VLBI array consisting of the JCMT on
Mauna Kea, the ARO/SMT on Mt. Graham in Arizona, and two telescopes of the
CARMA array at Cedar Flat in California. Both Sgr A* and the quasar calibrator
1924-292 were observed over three consecutive nights, and both sources were
clearly detected on all baselines. For the first time, we are able to extract
1.3 mm VLBI interferometer phase information on Sgr A* through measurement of
closure phase on the triangle of baselines. On the third night of observing,
the correlated flux density of Sgr A* on all VLBI baselines increased relative
to the first two nights, providing strong evidence for time-variable change on
scales of a few Schwarzschild radii. These results suggest that future VLBI
observations with greater sensitivity and additional baselines will play a
valuable role in determining the structure of emission near the event horizon
