    Phenomenological model of nonequilibrium solidification

The maximum entropy production principle is used as a foundation for the nonequilibrium solidification theory. Based on this principle, a new simple model of dendrite solidification is proposed. The model predicts the explicit dependency of a dendrite's rate and tip size on supercooling. The obtained results are devoid of the contradictions of the previous models and show quantitative agreement with the recent experimental data for the SCN dendrite. Β© 2013 Elsevier B.V. Migration and Settlement: Soviet Union

Interest in human settlement systems and policies has been a central part of urban-related work at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) from the outset. From 1975 through 1978 this interest was manifested in the work of the Migration and Settlement Task, which was formally concluded in November 1978. Since then, attention has turned to dissemination of the Task's results and to the conclusion of its comparative study, which, under the leadership of Dr. Frans Willekens, is focusing on a comparative quantitative assessment of recent migration patterns and spatial population dynamics in all of IIASA's 17 National Member Organization countries. The comparative analysis of national patterns of interregional migration and spatial population growth is being carried out by an international network of scholars who are using methodology and computer programs developed at IIASA. In this paper, the author examines the spatial population dynamics of the Soviet Union, relating them to historical events and national population policies. Of particular interest is the urban-rural disaggregation, and the use of heretofore unavailable Soviet multiregional age-specific data. Reports summarizing previous work on migration and settlement at IIASA are listed at the end of this paper

Electron heating and acceleration for the nonlinear kinetic equation

    Get PDF
Time evolution of the isotropic electron distribution function while heating for the nonlinear kinetic equation with the Landau-Fokker-Planck collisional integral is studied. The considered heating sources are mono kinetic distribution, hot ions, and a quasi-linear diffusion operator. The investigation is mainly concentrated on the formation of the distribution function and tail acceleration. The time-dependent solutions allowing the solutions in self-similar variables are examined. Also presented are analytical asymptotic solutions and comparison them with numerical results
