Photospheric Abundances of Volatile and Refractory Elements in Planet-Harboring Stars
By using the high-dispersion spectra of 14 bright planet-harboring stars
(along with 4 reference stars) observed with the new coude echelle spectrograph
at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, we investigated the abundances of
volatile elements (C, N, O, S, Zn; low condensation temperature Tc) in order to
examine whether these show any significant difference compared to the
abundances of other refractory elements (Si, Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ni; high Tc) which
are known to be generally overabundant in those stars with planets, since a
Tc-dependence is expected if the cause of such a metal-richness is due to the
accretion of solid planetesimals onto the host star. We found, however, that
all elements we studied behave themselves quite similarly to Fe (i.e.,
[X/Fe]~0) even for the case of volatile elements, which may suggest that the
enhanced metallicity in those planet-bearing stars is not so much an acquired
character (by accretion of rocky material) as rather primordial.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in PAS
KINEMATICS ANALYSIS OF TWO STYLES OF BOW FOR MARTIAL ARTISTS AND AVARAGE STUDENTS
The aim of this study was to conduct operating analysis of two styles of bow (RITSUREI and ZAREI) for martial artists and average students, and to compare their kinematics characteristic of. Subjects of this study were healthy men (n=33) who were martial artist group (MA, n=18) and average student group (AS, n=15). Subjects conducted RITSUREI and ZAREI three times each. Results of paired t-test, on angular degree parameter of RITSUREI, MA made smaller angular degree of the upper limbs and angular degree of the neck than that of AS. regarding time parameter components, the total time of ZAREI, from beginning of it to stopping, from stopping of it to end, and from beginning of RITSUREI to stopping were significantly shorter than that of AS. Pump Built-in Hamiltonian Method for Pump-Probe Spectroscopy
We propose a new method of calculating nonlinear optical responses of
interacting electronic systems. In this method, the total Hamiltonian (system +
system-pump interaction) is transformed into a different form that (apparently)
does not have a system-pump interaction. The transformed Hamiltonian, which we
call the pump built-in Hamiltonian, has parameters that depend on the strength
of the pump beam. Using the pump built-in Hamiltonian, we can calculate
nonlinear responses (responses to probe beams as a function of the pump beam)
by applying the {\em linear} response theory. We demonstrate the basic idea of
this new method by applying it to a one-dimensional, two-band model, in the
case the pump excitation is virtual (coherent excitation). We find that the
exponent of the Fermi edge singularity varies with the pump intensity.Comment: 6 page
Water activity in liquid food systems : A molecular scale interpretation
Water activity has historically been and continues to be recognised as a key concept in the area of food science. Despite its ubiquitous utilisation, it still appears as though there is confusion concerning its molecular basis, even within simple, single component solutions. Here, by close examination of the well-known Norrish equation and subsequent application of a rigorous statistical theory, we are able to shed light on such an origin. Our findings highlight the importance of solute-solute interactions thus questioning traditional, empirically based “free water” and “water structure” hypotheses. Conversely, they support the theory of “solute hydration and clustering” which advocates the interplay of solute-solute and solute-water interactions but crucially, they do so in a manner which is free of any estimations and approximations
Dynamics of the Singlet-Triplet System Coupled with Conduction Spins -- Application to Pr Skutterudites
Dynamics of the singlet-triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) system at
finite temperatures is discussed by use of the non-crossing approximation. Even
though the Kondo temperature is smaller than excitation energy to the CEF
triplet, the Kondo effect appears at temperatures higher than the CEF
splitting, and accordingly only quasi-elastic peak is found in the magnetic
spectra. On the other hand, at lower temperatures the CEF splitting suppresses
the Kondo effect and inelastic peak develops. The broad quasi-elastic neutron
scattering spectra observed in PrFe_4P_{12} at temperatures higher than the
quadrupole order correspond to the parameter range where the CEF splittings are
