    Effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density in older men : a randomised controlled trial

    Summary We examined the independent and combined effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium&ndash;vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density (BMD) in older men. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in femoral neck BMD, but additional calcium&ndash;vitamin D3 did not enhance the response in this group of older well-nourished men.Introduction This 12-month randomised controlled trial assessed whether calcium&ndash;vitamin-D3-fortified milk could enhance the effects of a multi-component exercise program on BMD in older men.Methods Men (n&thinsp; =&thinsp;180) aged 50&ndash;79 years were randomised into: (1) exercise + fortified milk; (2) exercise; (3) fortified milk; or (4) controls. Exercise consisted of high intensity progressive resistance training with weight-bearing impact exercise. Men assigned to fortified milk consumed 400 mL/day of low fat milk providing an additional 1,000 mg/day calcium and 800 IU/day vitamin D3. Femoral neck (FN), total hip, lumbar spine and trochanter BMD and body composition (DXA), muscle strength 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were assessed.Results There were no exercise-by-fortified milk interactions at any skeletal site. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in FN BMD relative to no-exercise (p&thinsp;&lt;&thinsp;0.001); lean mass (0.6 kg, p&thinsp;&lt;&thinsp;0.05) and muscle strength (20&ndash;52%, p&thinsp;&lt;&thinsp;0.001) also increased in response to exercise. For lumbar spine BMD, there was a net 1.4&ndash;1.5% increase in all treatment groups relative to controls (all p&thinsp;&lt;&thinsp;0.01). There were no main effects of fortified milk at any skeletal site.Conclusion A multi-component community-based exercise program was effective for increasing FN BMD in older men, but additional calcium&ndash;vitamin D3 did not enhance the osteogenic response.<br /

    Potential ring of Dirac nodes in a new polymorph of Ca3_3P2_2

    We report the crystal structure of a new polymorph of Ca3_3P2_2, and an analysis of its electronic structure. The crystal structure was determined through Rietveld refinements of powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction data. Ca3_3P2_2 is found to be a variant of the Mn5_5Si3_3 structure type, with a Ca ion deficiency compared to the ideal 5:3 stoichiometry to yield a charge-balanced compound. We also report the observation of a secondary phase, Ca5_5P3_3H, in which the Ca and P sites are fully occupied and the presence of interstitial hydride ions creates a closed-shell electron-precise compound. We show via electronic structure calculations of Ca3_3P2_2 that the compound is stabilized by a gap in the density of states compared to the hypothetical compound Ca5_5P3_3. Moreover, the calculated band structure of Ca3_3P2_2 indicates that it should be a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with a highly unusual ring of Dirac nodes at the Fermi level. The Dirac states are protected against gap opening by a mirror plane in a manner analogous to graphene. The results suggest that further study of the electronic properties of Ca3_3P2_2 will be of interest

    Amazon entry on Amazon Marketplace

    There is an active policy debate seeking to understand whether Amazon first-party entry in competition with third-party merchants harms these merchants, and ultimately consumers, on Amazon Marketplace. Some argue that the exploitation of third-party data permits seller expropriation and reduces innovation while others claim that such entry permits the internalization of important externalities, benefiting consumers and merchants alike. We seek to inform this debate by measuring the predictors and effects of Amazon first-party retail entry on consumer and third-party merchant outcomes in the Home & Kitchen department of Germany’s Marketplace between 2016 and 2021. We find Amazon entry both within and across products is associated with modest positive effects on both consumer and third-party merchant outcomes more consistent with mild market expansion than with appropriating third-party sales. We find that both Amazon and large third-party merchants’ entry is associated with fewer subsequent new product introductions, but that these are consistent with regression to the mean rather than causal effects on innovation. Finally, we find that the predictors of Amazon’s within-product entry decisions are more consistent with a strategy that makes Marketplace more attractive to consumers than of third-party seller expropriation, including consideration of predictors based on aggregated Marketplace data. While the empirical setting presented challenges for estimating causal effects, our results are broadly inconsistent with systematic adverse effects of Amazon entry on Amazon Marketplace

    Caracterização sensorial e rendimento de extrato hidrossolúvel em cultivares de soja especiais para a alimentação humana.

    Estudos realizados a partir dos anos 90, evidenciando a funcionalidade da soja, vêm despertando o interesse aumentar o consumo, tanto do grão in natura como de seus derivados. O extrato hidrossolúvel de soja (EHS) ou leite de soja é um dos derivados da soja mais conhecidos pelos brasileiros. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo diferenciar sensorialmente os EHS das cultivares de sojas especiais para a alimentação humana: Embrapa 48, BRS 213, BRS 216, BRS 257, BRS 258, BRS 267 e BRS 282; e da cultivar convencional BRS 232, todas desenvolvidas pela Embrapa Soja e cultivadas na safra 2009/10, comparando seus rendimentos durante o processamento. Com os extratos padronizados a 3,4% de proteína, os maiores rendimentos foram obtidos pelas cultivares BRS 232, BRS 257 e BRS 282, diferenciando-se das demais cultivares testadas em relação ao potencial para a produção de extrato de soja. Todos os EHS foram muito semelhantes em relação à análise sensorial, entretanto a BRS 213 se destacou por apresentar o menor gosto residual. Amostras com características sensoriais mais próximas às características habituais de consumo (extrato com adição de açúcar e de aromatizante), possivelmente teriam resultado em maior discriminação sensorial entre as cultivares

    A Comparison of the Ovulation Method With the CUE Ovulation Predictor in Determining the Fertile Period

    The purpose of this study was to compare the CUE Ovulation Predictor with the ovulation method in determining the fertile period. Eleven regularly ovulating women measured their salivary and vaginal electrical resistance (ER) with the CUE, observed their cervical-vaginal mucus, and measured their urine for a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge on a daily basis. Data from 21 menstrual cycles showed no statistical difference (T= 0.33, p= 0.63) between the CUE fertile period, which ranged from 5 to 10 days (mean = 6.7 days, SD = 1.6), and the fertile period of the ovulation method, which ranged from 4 to 9 days (mean = 6.5 days, SD = 2.0). The CUE has potential as an adjunctive device in the learning and use of natural family planning methods
