Randomized Revenue Monotone Mechanisms for Online Advertising
Online advertising is the main source of revenue for many Internet firms. A
central component of online advertising is the underlying mechanism that
selects and prices the winning ads for a given ad slot. In this paper we study
designing a mechanism for the Combinatorial Auction with Identical Items (CAII)
in which we are interested in selling identical items to a group of bidders
each demanding a certain number of items between and . CAII generalizes
important online advertising scenarios such as image-text and video-pod
auctions [GK14]. In image-text auction we want to fill an advertising slot on a
publisher's web page with either text-ads or a single image-ad and in
video-pod auction we want to fill an advertising break of seconds with
video-ads of possibly different durations.
Our goal is to design truthful mechanisms that satisfy Revenue Monotonicity
(RM). RM is a natural constraint which states that the revenue of a mechanism
should not decrease if the number of participants increases or if a participant
increases her bid.
[GK14] showed that no deterministic RM mechanism can attain PoRM of less than
for CAII, i.e., no deterministic mechanism can attain more than
fraction of the maximum social welfare. [GK14] also design a
mechanism with PoRM of for CAII.
In this paper, we seek to overcome the impossibility result of [GK14] for
deterministic mechanisms by using the power of randomization. We show that by
using randomization, one can attain a constant PoRM. In particular, we design a
randomized RM mechanism with PoRM of for CAII
Changes in speech and breathing rate while speaking and biking
International audienceSpeech communication is embedded in many daily activities. In this paper we investigate the effect of biking on respiratory and speech parameters. Breathing and speech production were recorded in eleven subjects while speaking alone and while speaking and biking with different rates. Breathing frequency, speaking rate, speech and pause intervals, overall intensity and f0 were analyzed for the different tasks. It was hypothesized that cyclical motion increases breathing frequency, which leads to a restructuring of speech and pause intervals or an increase in speech rate. Our results generally confirm these predictions and are of relevance for applied sciences
Luminescence quenching of the triplet excimer state by air traces in gaseous argon
While developing a liquid argon detector for dark matter searches we
investigate the influence of air contamination on the VUV scintillation yield
in gaseous argon at atmospheric pressure. We determine with a radioactive
alpha-source the photon yield for various partial air pressures and different
reflectors and wavelength shifters. We find for the fast scintillation
component a time constant tau1= 11.3 +- 2.8 ns, independent of gas purity.
However, the decay time of the slow component depends on gas purity and is a
good indicator for the total VUV light yield. This dependence is attributed to
impurities destroying the long-lived argon excimer states. The population ratio
between the slowly and the fast decaying excimer states is determined for
alpha-particles to be 5.5 +-0.6 in argon gas at 1100 mbar and room temperature.
The measured mean life of the slow component is tau2 = 3.140 +- 0.067 microsec
at a partial air pressure of 2 x 10-6 mbar.Comment: 7 pages submitted to NIM
Proximal ulna comminuted fractures: Fixation using a double-plating technique
SummaryIntroductionComminuted fractures of the proximal ulna are severe injuries often associated with bone and ligament injuries of the elbow joint (Monteggia lesion, radial head fractures, dislocation of the elbow). The treatment of these fractures is very demanding and the functional results often fairly mediocre due to associated injuries. Based on a single-center retrospective study, we report the results of the treatment of these fractures fixed using a double-plate technique. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of this fixation mode and to compare it with other fractures series using a single plate fixation (in terms of bone union, elbow joint function, and complications stemming from the plates).Patients and methodsEighteen patients sustained a comminuted proximal ulna fracture between 2002 and 2006. The fractures were associated in five cases with a Monteggia type lesion, in two cases with elbow dislocation, and in four cases with a Mason 3 radial head fracture. Four patients had an open fracture. These comminuted ulna fractures included nine Mayo Clinic IIIB fractures. Bone fixation was performed with two third-cylinder tubular plates, one plate on each side of the proximal ulna. This allows more versatile solutions for screw insertion. Functional assessment (according to Broberg and Morrey) and radiological evaluation (bone healing) were provided at 6 months and at the longest follow-up by an independent surgeon.ResultsSixteen of 18 patients achieved bone union. No septic complications occurred and no hardware removal was required on patient request. In 67% of the cases, the Morrey score indicated excellent or good results with a mean score of 82.DiscussionThere are no reports in the literature on the technical point of fixation concerning complex fractures of the ulna. Two plates mean the possibility of twice the number of screw insertions for epiphyseal reconstruction . This fixation remains easy to perform and provides stable anatomic reconstruction of the ulna.Level of evidenceLevel IV. Retrospective study

Consolidation whole abdomen irradiation following adjuvant carboplatin-paclitaxel based chemotherapy for advanced uterine epithelial cancer: feasibility, toxicity and outcomes
Background: To evaluate feasibility and preliminary outcomes associated with sequential whole abdomen irradiation (WAI) as consolidative treatment following comprehensive surgery and systemic chemotherapy for advanced endometrial cancer. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients treated at our institution from 2000 to 2011. Inclusion criteria were stage III-IV endometrial cancer patients with histological proof of one or more sites of extra-uterine abdomen-confined disease, treated with WAI as part of multimodal therapy. Endpoints were feasibility, acute toxicity, late effects, recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). Twenty patients were identified. Chemotherapy consisted of 3 to 6 cycles of a platinum-paclitaxel regimen in 18 patients. WAI was delivered using conventional technique to a median total dose of 27.5 Gy. Results: No grade 4 toxicities occurred during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. No radiation dose reduction was necessary. Three patients developed small bowel obstruction, all in the context of recurrent intraperitoneal disease. Kaplan-Meier estimates and 95% confidence intervals for RFS and OS at one year were 63% (38–80%) and 83% (56-94%) and at 3 years 57% (33-76%) and 62% (34-81%), respectively. On univariate Cox analysis, stage IVB and serous papillary (SP) histology were found to be statistically significantly (at the p = 0.05 level) associated with worse RFS and OS. The peritoneal cavity was the most frequent site of initial failure. Conclusions: Consolidative WAI following chemotherapy is feasible and can be performed without interruption with manageable acute and late toxicity. Patients with endometrioid adenocarcinoma, especially stage FIGO III, had favorable outcomes possibly meriting prospective evaluation of the addition of WAI following chemotherapy in selected patients. Patients with SP do poorly and do not routinely benefit from this approach
Effect of Ions on the Organization of Phosphatidylcholine/Phosphatidic Acid Bilayers
AbstractLipid bilayers are two-dimensional fluids. Here, the effect of monovalent ion concentration on the mixing, and consequently the organization, of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC)/1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate (DOPA) bilayers has been examined. Epifluorescence microscopy was used to visualize the organization. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to assess the fluidity of the lipids. At high ionic strength the DOPC and DOPA lipids appear uniformly mixed. Upon lowering the ionic strength, rapid separation is observed. The DOPA-rich regions appear fractal-like and exhibit hysteresis in their properties. The lipids freely exchange between the two regions. These experiments clearly demonstrate the significant effect that electrostatics can have on membrane organization
Phase II study evaluating consolidation whole abdominal intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with advanced ovarian cancer stage FIGO III - The OVAR-IMRT-02 Study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prognosis for patients with advanced FIGO stage III epithelial ovarian cancer remains poor despite the aggressive standard treatment, consisting of maximal cytoreductive surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy. The median time to recurrence is less than 2 years, with a 5-years survival rate of -20-25%. Recurrences of the disease occur mostly intraperitoneally.</p> <p>Ovarian cancer is a radiosensitive tumor, so that the use of whole abdominal radiotherapy (WAR) as a consolidation therapy would appear to be a logical strategy. WAR used to be the standard treatment after surgery before the chemotherapy era; however, it has been almost totally excluded from the treatment of ovarian cancer during the past decade because of its high toxicity. Modern intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has the potential of sparing organs at risk like kidneys, liver, and bone marrow while still adequately covering the peritoneal cavity with a homogenous dose.</p> <p>Our previous phase I study showed for the first time the clinical feasibility of intensity-modulated WAR and pointed out promising results concerning treatment tolerance. The current phase-II study succeeds to the phase-I study to further evaluate the toxicity of this new treatment.</p> <p>Methods/design</p> <p>The OVAR-IMRT-02 study is a single-center one arm phase-II trial. Thirty seven patients with optimally debulked ovarian cancer stage FIGO III having a complete remission after chemotherapy will be treated with intensity-modulated WAR as a consolidation therapy.</p> <p>A total dose of 30 Gy in 20 fractions of 1.5 Gy will be applied to the entire peritoneal cavity including the liver surface and the pelvic and para-aortic node regions. Organ at risk are kidneys, liver (except the 1 cm-outer border), heart, vertebral bodies and pelvic bones.</p> <p>Primary endpoint is tolerability; secondary objectives are toxicity, quality of life, progression-free and overall survival.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Intensity-modulated WAR provides a new promising option in the consolidation treatment of ovarian carcinoma in patients with a complete pathologic remission after adjuvant chemotherapy.
