Stack-run adaptive wavelet image compression

We report on the development of an adaptive wavelet image coder based on stack-run representation of the quantized coefficients. The coder works by selecting an optimal wavelet packet basis for the given image and encoding the quantization indices for significant coefficients and zero runs between coefficients using a 4-ary arithmetic coder. Due to the fact that our coder exploits the redundancies present within individual subbands, its addressing complexity is much lower than that of the wavelet zerotree coding algorithms. Experimental results show coding gains of up to 1:4dB over the benchmark wavelet coding algorithm

A study of lipid profile in patients of subclinical hypothyroidism in rural area of Western Uttar Pradesh, India

Background: Dyslipidemia is thought to confer risk of cardiovascular disease development. Overt hypothyroidism is associated with lipid abnormalities. However, the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and pattern of lipid abnormalities is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess lipid abnormalities in patients of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and investigate relationship between lipid level and TSH.Methods: Serum lipid levels of 87 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and 101 age and sex matched euthyroid controls were evaluated in this cross sectional case control study.Results: In this study total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly elevated (p value<0.05) in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) as compared to control group. Triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) were also high in these patients as compared to control but the difference was not statistically significant. High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was marginally lower in these patients than control.Conclusions: Total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) are higher in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) as compared to euthyroid individuals. Other lipid like Triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) may be marginally elevated whereas high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) may be slightly reduced in these patients as compared to euthyroid individuals. There is also a positive correlation of LDL-C and TC with TSH level. As abnormal lipids are associated with development of cardiovascular diseases, lipid profile in these patients needs careful monitoring.

Emotional and psychological impact of interpreting for clients with traumatic histories on interpreters : a review of qualitative articles

Interpreters play an important role in the health and social care system. The aim of this review is to synthesize available qualitative studies exploring experiences of interpreters when working with individuals and groups who have experienced domestic violence and abuse or other traumatic situations. A comprehensive literature search of databases helped identify 18 studies including 3 quantitative and 15 qualitative studies published between 2003-2017. The studies were conducted in various countries and data analysis resulted in the development of 5 themes which included: ‘role and impact of interpreter’; ‘psychological and emotional impact of interpreting’; ‘workplace challenges faced by interpreters’; ‘coping strategies used by interpreters’; and ‘interpreters’ support needs’. Themes are discussed in relation to the available literature and gaps in the literature are identified
