    No evidence of a significant role for CTLA-4 in multiple sclerosis

    Variation in the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) gene plays a significant role in determining susceptibility to autoimmune thyroid disease and type 1 diabetes. Its role in multiple sclerosis is more controversial. In order to explore this logical candidate more thoroughly, we genotyped 771 multiple sclerosis trio families from the United Kingdom for the 3? untranslated region variable number tandem repeat, the CT60 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and five haplotype-tagging SNPs. No individual marker or common haplotype showed evidence of association with disease. These data suggest that any effect of CTLA-4 on multiple sclerosis susceptibility is likely to be very small

    Based on the assumption that the receiver Bob can apply any unitary transformation, Horodecki {\it et al.} [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 222}, 21 (1996)] proved that any mixed two spin-1/2 state which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality is useful for teleportation. Here, we further show that any X state which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality can also be used for nonclassical teleportation even if Bob can only perform the identity or the Pauli rotation operations. Moreover, we showed that the maximal difference between the two average fidelities achievable via Bob's arbitrary transformations and via the sole identity or the Pauli rotation is 1/9.Comment: 5 pages, to be published in "Quantum Information Processing

    Surface acoustic wave solid-state rotational micromotor

    Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are used to drive a 1mm diameter rotor at speeds exceeding 9000 rpm and torque of nearly 5 nNm. Unlike recent high-speed SAW rotary motors, however, the present design does not require a fluid coupling layer but interestingly exploits adhesive stiction as an internal preload, a force usually undesirable at these scales; with additional preloads, smaller rotors can be propelled to 15 000 rpm. This solid-state motor has no moving parts except for the rotor and is sufficiently simple to allow integration into miniaturized drive systems for potential use in microfluidic diagnostics, optical switching and microrobotics

    Pattern formation of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells

    Using a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation including short-range two-body attraction and three-body repulsion, we investigate the spatial distribution of indirect excitons in semiconductor coupled quantum wells. The results obtained can interpret the experimental phenomenon that annular exciton cloud first contracts then expands when the number of confined excitons is increased in impurity potential well, as observed by Lai \emph{et al.} [Lai etal.et al., Science \textbf{303}, 503 (2004)]. In particular, the model reconciles the patterns of exciton rings reported by Butov \emph{et al.} [Butov etal.et al., Nature \textbf{418}, 751 (2002)].     The nature of solar brightness variations

    The solar brightness varies on timescales from minutes to decades. Determining the sources of such variations, often referred to as solar noise, is of importance for multiple reasons: a) it is the background that limits the detection of solar oscillations, b) variability in solar brightness is one of the drivers of the Earth's climate system, c) it is a prototype of stellar variability which is an important limiting factor for the detection of extra-solar planets. Here we show that recent progress in simulations and observations of the Sun makes it finally possible to pinpoint the source of the solar noise. We utilise high-cadence observations from the Solar Dynamic Observatory and the SATIRE model to calculate the magnetically-driven variations of solar brightness. The brightness variations caused by the constantly evolving cellular granulation pattern on the solar surface are computed with the MURAM code. We find that surface magnetic field and granulation can together precisely explain solar noise on timescales from minutes to decades, i.e. ranging over more than six orders of magnitude in the period. This accounts for all timescales that have so far been resolved or covered by irradiance measurements. We demonstrate that no other sources of variability are required to explain the data. Recent measurements of Sun-like stars by CoRoT and Kepler uncovered brightness variations similar to that of the Sun but with much wider variety of patterns. Our finding that solar brightness variations can be replicated in detail with just two well-known sources will greatly simplify future modelling of existing CoRoT and Kepler as well as anticipated TESS and PLATO data.Comment: This is the submitted version of the paper published in Nature Astronom

    Non-commutative field theory approach to two-dimensional vortex liquid system

    We investigate the non-commutative (NC) field theory approach to the vortex liquid system restricted to the lowest Landau level (LLL) approximation. NC field theory effectively takes care of the phase space reduction of the LLL physics in a ⋆\star-product form and introduces a new gauge invariant form of a quartic potential of the order parameter in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy. This new quartic interaction coupling term has a non-trivial equivalence relation with that obtained by Br\'ezin, Nelson and Thiaville in the usual GL framework.     4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione

    The title compound, 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (1), was synthesized by a hetero-cyclization reaction of 4-chlorophenyl isothiocyanate and formic hydrazide. Compound 1 was characterized by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination as well as 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy, and microelemental analysis. X-ray crystallography on 1 confirms the molecule exists as the thione tautomer and shows the five-membered ring to be planar and to form a dihedral angle of 82.70(5)° with the appended chlorophenyl ring, indicating an almost orthogonal relationship. In the molecular packing, supramolecular dimers are formed via thioamide-N–H⋯S(thione) hydrogen bonds and these are connected by C=Sâ‹ŻÏ€(triazolyl) and C-Clâ‹ŻÏ€(triazolyl) interactions, leading to a three-dimensional architectur
