Equation of state and transport processes in self--similar spheres
We study the effect of transport processes (diffusion and free--streaming) on
a collapsing spherically symmetric distribution of matter in a self--similar
space--time. A very simple solution shows interesting features when it is
matched with the Vaidya exterior solution. In the mixed case (diffusion and
free--streaming), we find a barotropic equation of state in the stationary
regime. In the diffusion approximation the gravitational potential at the
surface is always constant; if we perturb the stationary state, the system is
very stable, recovering the barotropic equation of state as time progresses. In
the free--streaming case the self--similar evolution is stationary but with a
non--barotropic equation of state.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Plasma Edge Kinetic-MHD Modeling in Tokamaks Using Kepler Workflow for Code Coupling, Data Management and Visualization
A new predictive computer simulation tool targeting the development of the H-mode pedestal at the plasma edge in tokamaks and the triggering and dynamics of edge localized modes (ELMs) is presented in this report. This tool brings together, in a coordinated and effective manner, several first-principles physics simulation codes, stability analysis packages, and data processing and visualization tools. A Kepler workflow is used in order to carry out an edge plasma simulation that loosely couples the kinetic code, XGC0, with an ideal MHD linear stability analysis code, ELITE, and an extended MHD initial value code such as M3D or NIMROD. XGC0 includes the neoclassical ion-electron-neutral dynamics needed to simulate pedestal growth near the separatrix. The Kepler workflow processes the XGC0 simulation results into simple images that can be selected and displayed via the Dashboard, a monitoring tool implemented in AJAX allowing the scientist to track computational resources, examine running and archived jobs, and view key physics data, all within a standard Web browser. The XGC0 simulation is monitored for the conditions needed to trigger an ELM crash by periodically assessing the edge plasma pressure and current density profiles using the ELITE code. If an ELM crash is triggered, the Kepler workflow launches the M3D code on a moderate-size Opteron cluster to simulate the nonlinear ELM crash and to compute the relaxation of plasma profiles after the crash. This process is monitored through periodic outputs of plasma fluid quantities that are automatically visualized with AVS/Express and may be displayed on the Dashboard. Finally, the Kepler workflow archives all data outputs and processed images using HPSS, as well as provenance information about the software and hardware used to create the simulation. The complete process of preparing, executing and monitoring a coupled-code simulation of the edge pressure pedestal buildup and the ELM cycle using the Kepler scientific workflow system is described in this paper
Electromagnetic radiation produces frame dragging
It is shown that for a generic electrovacuum spacetime, electromagnetic
radiation produces vorticity of worldlines of observers in a Bondi--Sachs
frame. Such an effect (and the ensuing gyroscope precession with respect to the
lattice) which is a reminiscence of generation of vorticity by gravitational
radiation, may be linked to the nonvanishing of components of the Poynting and
the super--Poynting vectors on the planes othogonal to the vorticity vector.
The possible observational relevance of such an effect is commented.Comment: 8 pages RevTex 4-1; updated version to appear in Physical Review
Is disclosing an autism spectrum disorder in school associated with reduced stigmatization?
This is the final version. Available on open access from SAGE Publications via the DOI in this recordDisclosing an autism diagnosis is associated with reduced stigmatization for autistic
adults. However, it is unknown whether this is true for autistic adolescents. We used a
vignette-and-questionnaire design to study stigmatizing attitudes with adolescents (aged 11-
12 and 14-16 years, total N=250) in a UK school. We investigated the effect of disclosing
that a fictional adolescent was autistic on stigmatizing attitudes of peers by testing the effect
of disclosure on the social and emotional distance pupils wanted to maintain from the autistic
adolescent and their assessment of the adolescent’s responsibility for their own behaviour.
Moderation of effects by gender and age-group were analysed. Disclosing autism made no
improvement to the social and emotional distance peers wanted to maintain from the autistic
adolescent, but was associated with significant reduction in personal responsibility attributed
to the adolescent’s behaviour. Boys attributed more personal responsibility to the autistic
adolescent than girls, but this gender effect was reduced when autism was disclosed. These
findings suggest that disclosing autism to other pupils may be of limited use in reducing
stigmatization by peers in UK schools.Wellcome Trus
HI aperture synthesis and optical observations of the pair of galaxies NGC 6907 and 6908
NGC 6908, a S0 galaxy situated in direction of NGC 6907, was only recently
recognized as a distinct galaxy, instead of only a part of NGC 6907. We present
21 cm radio synthesis observations obtained with the GMRT and optical images
and spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini North telescope of this pair of
interacting galaxies. From the radio observations we obtained the velocity
field and the HI column density map of the whole region containing the NGC
6907/8 pair, and by means of the Gemini multi-object spectroscopy we obtained
high quality photometric images and resolution spectra sampling the
two galaxies. By comparing the rotation curve of NGC 6907 obtained from the two
opposite sides around the main kinematic axis, we were able to distinguish the
normal rotational velocity field from the velocity components produced by the
interaction between the two galaxies. Taking into account the rotational
velocity of NGC 6907 and the velocity derived from the absorption lines for NGC
6908, we verified that the relative velocity between these systems is lower
than 60 km s. The emission lines observed in the direction of NGC 6908,
not typical of S0 galaxies, have the same velocity expected for the NGC 6907
rotation curve. Some of them, superimposed on the absorption profiles, which
reinforces the idea that they were not formed in NGC 6908. Finally, the HI
profile exhibits details of the interaction, showing three components: one for
NGC 6908, another for the excited gas in the NGC 6907 disk and a last one for
the gas with higher relative velocities left behind NGC 6908 by dynamical
friction, used to estimate the time when the interaction started in years ago.Comment: 11 pages, 5 tables, 13 figures. Corrected typos. Accepted for

Effect of drying temperature on the nutritional quality of the pinhão (araucária angustifolia) flour.
At present, there is quite limited market for pinhão products due to their low level of industrialization. This study aimed to evaluate the drying process of pinhão at 40 oC, 50 oC and 60 °C for essential amino acids preservation in the final product. Effective diffusivity (Deff) was 15.6x10-10m2.s-1at 60 oC and the correspondent activation energy was 31.13 kJ. mol-1. Compared to raw pinhão, it was observed greater retention of the amino acid content for the pinhão flour obtained at 50 oC.Autoria: MATTOS, L. da S. de [i.e. NASCIMENTO, L. da S. de M.]
Self-similar and charged spheres in the diffusion approximation
We study spherical, charged and self--similar distributions of matter in the
diffusion approximation. We propose a simple, dynamic but physically meaningful
solution. For such a solution we obtain a model in which the distribution
becomes static and changes to dust. The collapse is halted with damped mass
oscillations about the absolute value of the total charge.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
