    Biologically fixed N2 as a source for the N2O production in a grass clover mixture, measured by 15N2

    The contribution of biologically fixed dinitrogen (N2) to the nitrous oxide (N2O) production in grasslands is unknown. To assess the contribution of recently fixed N2 as a source of N2O and the transfer of fixed N from clover to companion grass, mixtures of white clover and perennial ryegrass were incubated for 14 days in a growth cabinet with a 15N2-enriched atmosphere (0.4 atom% excess). Immediately after labelling, half of the grass-clover pots were sampled for N2 fixation determination, whereas the remaining half were examined for emission of 15N labelled N2O for another eight days using a static chamber method. Biological N2 fixation measured in grass-clover shoots and roots as well as in soil constituted 342, 38 and 67 mg N m-2 d-1 at 16, 26 and 36 weeks after emergence, respectively. The drop in N2 fixation was most likely due to a severe aphid attack on the clover component. Transfer of recently fixed N from clover to companion grass was detected at 26 and 36 weeks after emergence and amounted to 0.7 ± 0.1 mg N m-2 d-1, which represented 1.7 ± 0.3 % of the N accumulated in grass shoots during the labelling period. Total N2O emission was 91, 416 and 259 μg N2O-N m-2 d-1 at 16, 26 and 36 weeks after emergence, respectively. Only 3.2 ± 0.5 ppm of the recently fixed N2 was emitted as N2O on a daily basis, which accounted for 2.1 ± 0.5 % of the total N2O-N emission. Thus, recently fixed N released via easily degradable clover residues appears to be a minor source of N2O

    Simple vertex correction improves GW band energies of bulk and two-dimensional crystals

    The GW self-energy method has long been recognized as the gold standard for quasiparticle (QP) calculations of solids in spite of the fact that the neglect of vertex corrections and the use of a DFT starting point lacks rigorous justification. In this work we remedy this situation by including a simple vertex correction that is consistent with an LDA starting point. We analyse the effect of the self-energy by splitting it into a short-range and long-range term which are shown to govern respectively the center and size of the band gap. The vertex mainly improves the short-range correlations and therefore has a small effect on the band gap, while it shifts the band gap center up in energy by around 0.5 eV in good agreement with experiments. Our analysis also explains how the relative importance of short- and long-range interactions in structures of different dimensionality is reflected in their QP energies. Inclusion of the vertex comes at practically no extra computational cost and even improves the basis set convergence compared to GW. The method thus provides an efficient and rigorous improvement over the GW approximation and sets a new standard for quasiparticle calculations of solids

    We analyse the effects of immigration quotas on growth and discounted welfare in a North-South version of the quality ladders growth model. Immigration quotas in the North increase the growth rate of utility for all consumers. However, they lower the static utility level and discounted welfare of Northern workers. Also the discounted welfare of asset owners drops. Hence, unlike in the static migration model where the representative agent in the host country benefits from immigration, in our dynamic migration model, the representative agent loses despite a positive growth effect of immigration.     Deep Imaging of the Double Quasar 0957+561: New Constraints on H_0

    We present new results from extremely deep, high-resolution images of the field around the double quasar QSO 0957+561. A possible gravitational arc system near the double quasar has recently been reported, which, if real, would set strong constraints on determinations of the Hubble constant from the time delay in the double quasar. We find that both the morphology and the colors of the claimed arc systems suggest that they are chance alignments of three and two different objects, and not gravitationally lensed arcs. Hence, the constraints on H0H_0-determinations from the arcs are not valid. Also, a small group of galaxies at z=0.5z=0.5 near the line-of-sight which was required to have a very large mass in the physically interesting arc models, is most likely insignificant. From our deep images we are able to use weak lensing of faint background galaxies in the field to map the gravitational potential in the main cluster. This sets new constraints on determinations of H0H_0. We find that the Hubble constant is constrained to be less than 70km/(s Mpc), if the time delay between the two images of the QSO is equal to or larger than 1.1 years.Comment: (uuencoded and compressed postscipt including 3 figures); 14 page

    Why are Buyouts Levered: The Financial Structure of Private Equity Funds

    This paper presents a model of the financial structure of private equity firms. In the model, the general partner of the firm encounters a sequence of deals over time where the exact quality of each deal cannot be credibly communicated to investors. We show that the optimal financing arrangement is consistent with a number of characteristics of the private equity industry. First, the firm should be financed by a combination of fund capital raised before deals are encountered, and capital that is raised to finance a specific deal. Second, the fund investors' claim on fund cash flow is a combination of debt and levered equity, while the general partner receives a claim similar to the carry contracts received by real-world practitioners. Third, the fund will be set up in a manner similar to that observed in practice, with investments pooled within a fund, decision rights over investments held by the general partner, and limits set in partnership agreements on the size of particular investments. Fourth, the model suggests that incentives will lead to overinvestment in good states of the world and underinvestment in bad states, so that the natural industry cycles will be multiplied. Fifth, investments made in recessions will on average outperform investments made in booms.
