Risks of Sharing Cyber Incident Information
Incident information sharing is being encouraged and mandated as a way of improving overall cyber intelligence and defense, but its take up is slow. Organisations may well be justified in perceiving risks in sharing and disclosing cyber incident information, but they tend to express such worries in broad and vague terms. This paper presents a specific and granular analysis of the risks in cyber incident information sharing, looking in detail at what information may be contained in incident reports and which specific risks are associated with its disclosure. We use the STIX incident model as indicative of the types of information that might be reported. For each data field included, we identify and evaluate the threats associated with its disclosure, including the extent to which it identifies organisations and individuals. The main outcome of this analysis is a detailed understanding of which information in cyber incident reports requires protection, against specific threats with assessed severity. A secondary outcome of the analysis is a set of guidelines for disciplined use of the STIX incident model in order to reduce information security risk
Hepatitis C virus quasispecies in cancerous and noncancerous hepatic lesions: the core protein-encoding region.
We have shown that highly proofreading DNA polymerase is required for the polymerase chain reaction in the genetic analysis of hepatitis C virus (HCV). To clarify the status of HCV quasispecies in hepatic tissue using proofreading DNA polymerase, we performed a genetic analysis of the HCV core protein-encoding region in cancerous and noncancerous lesions derived from 4 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. In contrast to the previously published data, we observed neither deletions nor stop codons in the analyzed region and no significant difference in the complexity of HCV quasispecies between cancerous and noncancerous lesions. This result suggests that the HCV core gene is never structurally defective in hepatic tissues, including cancerous lesions. However, in 3 of the patients, the consensus HCV species differed between cancerous and noncancerous lesions, suggesting that the predominant replicating HCV species differs between these 2 types of lesions. Moreover, during the course of the study, we obtained several interesting variants possessing a substitution at codon 9 of the core gene, whose substitution has been shown to induce the production of the F protein synthesized by a - 2/+1 ribosomal frameshift.</p
Quantitative characterization of the Antarctic ozone hole
The long-term evolution of the Antarctic ozone hole is studied based on the TOMS data and the JMA data-set of stratospheric temperature in relation with the possible role of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC's). The effective mass of depleted ozone in the ozone hole at its annual mature stage reached a historical maximum of 55 Mt in 1991, 4.3 times larger than in 1981. The ozone depletion rate during 30 days before the mature ozone hole does not show any appreciable long-term trend but the interannual fluctuations do, ranging from 0.169 to 0.689 Mt/day with the average of 0.419 Mt/day for the period of 1979 - 1991. The depleted ozone mass has the highest correlation with the region below 195 K on the 30 mb surface in June, whereas the ozone depletion rate correlates most strongly with that in August. The present result strongly suggests that the long-term evolution of the mature ozone hole is caused both by the interannual change of the latitudinal coverage of the early PSC's, which may control the latitude and date of initiation of ozone decrease, and by that of the spatial coverage of the mature PSC's which may control the ozone depletion rate in the Antarctic spring
Homodyne detection for measuring internal quantum correlations of optical pulses
A new method is described for determining the quantum correlations at
different times in optical pulses by using balanced homodyne detection. The
signal pulse and sequences of ultrashort test pulses are superimposed, where
for chosen distances between the test pulses their relative phases and
intensities are varied from measurement to measurement. The correlation
statistics of the signal pulse is obtained from the time-integrated difference

Domain Wall Junction in N=2 Supersymmetric QED in four dimensions
An exact solution of domain wall junction is obtained in N=2 supersymmetric
(SUSY) QED with three massive hypermultiplets. The junction preserves two out
of eight SUSY. Both a (magnetic) Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term and complex masses
for hypermultiplets are needed to obtain the junction solution. There are zero
modes corresponding to spontaneously broken translation, SUSY, and U(1). All
broken and unbroken SUSY charges are explicitly worked out in the Wess-Zumino
gauge in N=1 superfields as well as in components. The relation to models in

Spin torque resonant vortex core expulsion for an efficient radio-frequency detection scheme
Spin-polarised radio-frequency currents, whose frequency is equal to that of
the gyrotropic mode, will cause an excitation of the core of a magnetic vortex
confined in a magnetic tunnel junction. When the excitation radius of the
vortex core is greater than that of the junction radius, vortex core expulsion
is observed, leading to a large change in resistance, as the layer enters a
predominantly uniform magnetisation state. Unlike the conventional spin-torque
diode effect, this highly tunable resonant effect will generate a voltage which
does not decrease as a function of rf power, and has the potential to form the
basis of a new generation of tunable nanoscale radio-frequency detectors
An Index Theorem for Domain Walls in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
The supersymmetric abelian Higgs model with N scalar fields admits multiple
domain wall solutions. We perform a Callias-type index calculation to determine
the number of zero modes of this soliton. We confirm that the most general
domain wall has 2(N-1) zero modes, which can be interpreted as the positions
and phases of (N-1) constituent domain walls. This implies the existence of

Molecular characterization of microbial communities in fault-bordered aquifers in the Miocene formation of northernmost Japan
We investigated the diversity and distribution of archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences in deep aquifers of mid- to late Miocene hard shale located in the northernmost region of the Japanese archipelago. A major fault in the north-west-south-east (NW-SE) direction runs across the studied area. We collected three groundwater samples from boreholes on the south-west (SW) side of the fault at depths of 296, 374 and 625 m below ground level (m.b.g.l.) and one sample from the north-east (NE) side of the fault at a depth of 458 m.b.g.l. The groundwater samples were observed to be neutral and weakly saline. The total microbial counts after staining with acridine orange were in the order 105-106 cells mL-1 and 103 cells mL-1 in the aquifers to the SW and to the NE of the fault, respectively. A total of 407 archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences (204 and 203 sequences, respectively) were determined for clone libraries constructed from all groundwater samples. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the libraries constructed from the SW aquifers were generally coherent but considerably different from those constructed from the NE aquifer. All of the archaeal clone libraries from the SW aquifers were predominated by a single sequence closely related to the archaeon Methanoculleus chikugoensis, and the corresponding bacterial libraries were mostly predominated by the sequences related to Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and δ-Proteobacteria. In contrast, the libraries from the NE aquifer were dominated by uncultured environmental archaeal clones with no methanogen sequences and by β-proteobacterial clones with no sequences related to Bacteroidetes and δ-Proteobacteria. Hence, the possible coexistence of methanogens and sulphate reducers in Horonobe deep borehole (HDB) on the SW side is suggested, particularly in HDB-6 (374 m.b.g.l.). Moreover, these organisms might play an important geochemical role in the groundwater obtained from the aquifers
Super-long Anabiosis of Ancient Microorganisms in Ice and Terrestrial Models for Development of Methods to Search for Life on Mars, Europa and other Planetary Bodies
Successful missions to Mars, Europe and other bodies of the Solar system have created a prerequisite to search for extraterrestrial life. The first attempts of microbial life detection on the Martian surface by the Viking landed missions gave no biological results. Microbiological investigations of the Martian subsurface ground ice layers seem to be more promising. It is well substantiated to consider the Antarctic ice sheet and the Antarctic and Arctic permafrost as terrestrial analogues of Martian habitats. The results of our long-standing microbiological studies of the Antarctic ice would provide the basis for detection of viable microbial cells on Mars. Our microbiological investigations of the deepest and thus most ancient strata of the Antarctic ice sheet for the first time gave evidence for the natural phenomenon of long-term anabiosis (preservation of viability and vitality for millennia years). A combination of classical microbiological methods, epifluorescence microscopy, SEM, TEM, molecular diagnostics, radioisotope labeling and other techniques made it possible for us to obtain convincing proof of the presence of pro- and eukaryotes in the Antarctic ice sheet. In this communication, we will review and discuss some critical issues related to the detection of viable microorganisms in cold terrestrial environments with regard to future searches for microbial life and/or its biological signatures on extraterrestrial objects
