Computer aided learning knowledge among medical students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia
Computer proficiency has become necessary in many areas of medicine, administration,
clinical practices, research, as well as education. The need for greater competence in
information and communication technologies (ICT) by doctors and medical students is
increasingly recognised. Objectives: This study was undertaken to determine the knowledge,
attitude and practices on ICT in the medical students of a local university. Methods: A
cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among medical students (Years 1-5) from
December 2005 to May 2006 in Universiti Putra Malaysia. A self-administered questionnaire
was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were used to obtain frequencies for all
variables studied. Results: There were 343 respondents aged 18-29 years old. The results
showed 82.2% of the respondents (82.2%) were comfortable using computers after entering
medical school and 89.2% believed that ICT and computers skills are important for doctors.
About 81.3% of the respondents were aware of the role of ICT and computers in learning
medicine, 90.4% had used presentation packages, and 83.4% used word processing and
search engines as software tools. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that
medical students are knowledgeable and do have skills in information technology (IT) and
computers. They are also aware of the role of information technology (IT) and computers
in medicin
Granite Exploration by using Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI): A Case Study in Johor
Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) is a tool used in near surface geophysical surveys by flowing an electric current through electrodes that were injected into the ground. The usage of electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) method dominated by geophysicist has increased tremendously in geotechnical engineering application owing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the method in term of time, cost and also data coverage. The survey performed with respect to the particular reference to ERI in determining the granite rock underneath the ground. There were seven (7) lines of ERI performed at the study area by using ABEM Terrameter LS 2 set of equipment based on Schlumberger protocol. Six (6) boreholes were also drilled to obtain engineering properties of rock at the study area. In order to develop the relationship between resistivity and engineering properties, a comparison between borehole field test result and the resistivity value were made. Results from the ERT indicated the presence of zones with high resistivity values identified as overburden soil, fractured granite and solid granite. The findings of this study also showed that the electrical resistivity imaging coupled with borehole drillings were applicable tools for the determination of the granite rock underneath the ground via subsurface profiles and such as depth of overburden soil and engineering properties of soil
Growth performance of Malaysian's spoongrass, Halophila ovalis (R.Br.) Hooker f. under different substrate, salinity and light regime.
Halophila ovalis plants collected from the native environment (Lat. 04°54.473 N, Long. 115°22.299’E-Pantai Bangat, Lawas, Sarawak, Malaysia) were grown in aquarium culture system to assess: (i) the feasibility of using planting materials e.g. rhizomes with and devoid of leaves, (ii) the growth and development of the plants under non-native substrates, fine beach sand and coarse river sand, (iii) the sustain growth and development of the population, and (iv) the tolerance range of plants under the tested salinity and depth. These assessment were achieved by planting rhizomes with or devoid of leaves in the tested sub-strates in containers, maintained in artificial seawater of various salinity, with minimum aeration and exposed in shaded out- door natural condition. The artificial seawater permitted a standardization of the medium. By manipulating the placement of substrates in the container (and planting of rhizomes into individual container) then submerged at different depths into the aquarium facilitated observation, recording of data and transferring of plants from one test condition to another. The morpho- logical changes of the vegetative parts e.g. leaf, petiole dimensions and paired cross-veins numbers of H. ovalisin the created conditions were compared to those of H. ovalis from native environment
Antibacterial activities of selected seaweed and seagrass from Port Dickson coastal water against different aquaculture pathogens
Eight seaweed species in Teluk Kemang and three seagrass species in Teluk Pelanduk, Port Dickson, respectively, were screened for antibacterial activities. The antibacterial activities were screened using disc diffusion test, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against six aquacultural pathogens strains Aeromonas hydrophila ATCC35654, Vibrio harveyi BB120, Vibrio harveyi ATCC14126, Vibrio alginolyticus ATCC17749, Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC17803 and Vibrio anguillarum ATCC43313. The results showed that among all the pathogens, seaweed Padina minor and seagrass Thalassia hemprichii had the strongest antibacterial activity against Vibrio harveyi BB120 and Vibrio harveyi ATCC14126, respectively. The lowest values for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were obtained from Padina minor against V. harveyi BB120 and Thalassia hemprichii against V. harveyi ATCC14126, respectively. The findings suggested that seaweed and seagrass in Port Dickson coastal water have the potential to prevent bacterial diseases particularly in aquaculture
Risk factors of home injury among elderly people in Malaysia
Background: Home injuries among elderly people are a public health concern. This study aimed to determine the frequency and risk factors of home injuries among elderly people in Malaysia. Methods: The Third National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2006 was carried out from April to July 2006. The sample was proportional to population size and selected in 2 stages. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a validated questionnaire. Only injuries occurring within the previous year were included to avoid recall bias. The types of home injury, places where the injuries occurred, ability to work after the injury, and hospital admission were recorded, as were demographic variables such as sex, age, marital status, ethnicity, and residential area. Results: Of 4842 respondents aged ≥60 years, 279 (5.8%) had experienced some kind of home injury within the previous year. The most common types of injury were fall (n=205), cuts (n=43), and being struck by objects (n=14). The most common injury locations were the kitchen (n=81), garden (n=65), bathroom/toilet (n=45), living room (n=26), bedroom (n=22), and stairs (n=21). Home injury rates were significantly higher among women than men (7.4% vs. 3.9%, p<0.001). Married elderly people were less likely to have a home injury than divorced/widowed or single elderly people (4.9% vs. 8.0% vs. 8.0%). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that women (adjusted odds ratio [OR]=1.87, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.37-2.55) and respondents aged 70-74 years (adjusted OR=1.45, 95% CI=1.02-2.07) were more likely to sustain a home injury. Conclusion: With the increase in the elderly population, home injury prevention programmers are urgently needed
The 'help' question doesn't help when screening for major depression: external validation of the three-question screening test for primary care patients managed for physical complaints
Major depression, although frequent in primary care, is commonly hidden behind multiple physical complaints that are often the first and only reason for patient consultation. Major depression can be screened by two validated questions that are easier to use in primary care than the full Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) criteria. A third question, called the 'help' question, improves the specificity without apparently decreasing the sensitivity of this screening procedure. We validated the abbreviated screening procedure for major depression with and without the 'help' question in primary care patients managed for a physical complaint.
This diagnostic accuracy study used data from the SODA (for 'SOmatisation Depression Anxiety') cohort study conducted by 24 general practitioners (GPs) in western Switzerland that included patients over 18 years of age with at least a single physical complaint at index consultation. Major depression was identified with the full Patient Health Questionnaire. GPs were asked to screen patients for major depression with the three screening questions 1 year after inclusion.
Of 937 patients with at least a single physical complaint, 751 were eligible 1 year after index consultation. Major depression was diagnosed in 69/724 (9.5%) patients. The sensitivity and specificity of the two-question method alone were 91.3% (95% CI 81.4 to 96.4) and 65.0% (95% CI 61.2 to 68.6), respectively. Adding the 'help' question decreased the sensitivity (59.4%; 95% CI 47.0 to 70.9) but improved the specificity (88.2%; 95% CI 85.4 to 90.5) of the three-question method.
The use of two screening questions for major depression was associated with high sensitivity and low specificity in primary care patients presenting a physical complaint. Adding the 'help' question improved the specificity but clearly decreased the sensitivity; when using the 'help' question, four out of ten patients with depression will be missed, compared to only one out of ten with the two-question method. Therefore, the 'help' question is not useful as a screening question, but may help discussing management strategies
Prevalence, associated factors and predictors of anxiety: a community survey in Selangor, Malaysia
Background: Anxiety is the most common mental health disorders in the general population. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety, its associated factors and the predictors of anxiety among adults in the community of Selangor, Malaysia.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in three districts in Selangor, Malaysia. The inclusion criteria of this study were Malaysian citizens, adults aged 18 years and above, and living in the selected living quarters based on the list provided by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOS). Participants completed a set of questionnaires, including the validated Malay version of Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD 7) to detect anxiety.
Results: Of the 2512 participants who were approached, 1556 of them participated in the study (61.90 %). Based on the cut-off point of 8 and above in the GAD-7, the prevalence of anxiety was 8.2 %. Based on the initial multiple logistic regression analysis, the predictors of anxiety were depression, serious problems at work, domestic violence and high perceived stress. When reanalyzed again after removing depression, low self-esteem and high perceived stress, six predictors that were identified are cancer, serious problems at work, domestic violence, unhappy relationship with family, non-organizational religious activity and intrinsic religiosity.
Conclusion: This study reports the prevalence of anxiety among adults in the community of Selangor, Malaysia and also the magnitude of the associations between various factors and anxiety
A case study of an individual participant data meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy showed that prediction regions represented heterogeneity well
The diagnostic accuracy of a screening tool is often characterized by its sensitivity and specificity. An analysis of these measures must consider their intrinsic correlation. In the context of an individual participant data meta-analysis, heterogeneity is one of the main components of the analysis. When using a random-effects meta-analytic model, prediction regions provide deeper insight into the effect of heterogeneity on the variability of estimated accuracy measures across the entire studied population, not just the average. This study aimed to investigate heterogeneity via prediction regions in an individual participant data meta-analysis of the sensitivity and specificity of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for screening to detect major depression. From the total number of studies in the pool, four dates were selected containing roughly 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the total number of participants. A bivariate random-effects model was fitted to studies up to and including each of these dates to jointly estimate sensitivity and specificity. Two-dimensional prediction regions were plotted in ROC-space. Subgroup analyses were carried out on sex and age, regardless of the date of the study. The dataset comprised 17,436 participants from 58 primary studies of which 2322 (13.3%) presented cases of major depression. Point estimates of sensitivity and specificity did not differ importantly as more studies were added to the model. However, correlation of the measures increased. As expected, standard errors of the logit pooled TPR and FPR consistently decreased as more studies were used, while standard deviations of the random-effects did not decrease monotonically. Subgroup analysis by sex did not reveal important contributions for observed heterogeneity; however, the shape of the prediction regions differed. Subgroup analysis by age did not reveal meaningful contributions to the heterogeneity and the prediction regions were similar in shape. Prediction intervals and regions reveal previously unseen trends in a dataset. In the context of a meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy, prediction regions can display the range of accuracy measures in different populations and settings
