    The Albedo, Size, and Density of Binary Kuiper Belt Object (47171) 1999 TC36

    We measured the system-integrated thermal emission of the binary Kuiper Belt Object 1999 TC36 at wavelengths near 24 and 70 microns using the Spitzer space telescope. We fit these data and the visual magnitude using both the Standard Thermal Model and thermophysical models. We find that the effective diameter of the binary is 405 km, with a range of 350 -- 470 km, and the effective visible geometric albedo for the system is 0.079 with a range of 0.055 -- 0.11. The binary orbit, magnitude contrast between the components, and system mass have been determined from HST data (Margot et al., 2004; 2005a; 2005b). Our effective diameter, combined with that system mass, indicate an average density for the objects of 0.5 g/cm3, with a range 0.3 -- 0.8 g/cm3. This density is low compared to that of materials expected to be abundant in solid bodies in the trans-Neptunian region, requiring 50 -- 75% of the interior of 1999 TC36 be taken up by void space. This conclusion is not greatly affected if 1999 TC36 is ``differentiated'' (in the sense of having either a rocky or just a non-porous core). If the primary is itself a binary, the average density of that (hypothetical) triple system would be in the range 0.4 -- 1.1 g/cm3, with a porosity in the range 15 -- 70%.Comment: ApJ, in press (May, 2006

    Norwegian dairy farmer's preferences for breeding goal traits and associations with herd and farm characteristics

    The aims of this study were to investigate variation and clustering in breeding goal trait preferences among Norwegian dairy farmers and to identify factors with a systematic influence on their preferences. An internet-based questionnaire was sent out to dairy farmers connected to the Norwegian co-operative breeding organization Geno (N = 8222), of which 10.8% answered (N = 888). Of the 15 suggested traits fertility had the highest overall ranking, while parasite resistance and methane emission had the lowest. Four distinct preference clusters were identified by the means of cluster analysis, of which two had a high preference for milk production. Differences in terms of farm and herd characteristics between clusters suggests a mixture of systematic and intrinsic effects on breeding goal trait priorities. This study shows that Norwegian dairy farmers’ preferences for breeding goal traits fall into four distinct clusters, both affected by herd and farm characteristics along with intrinsic value

    Arterial Elastin as Seen with Scanning Electron Microscopy: A Review

    All large arteries contain elastin, collagen, and muscle which can be seen with light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Elastin forms an internal elastic lamina (IEL) in all arteries, but also forms multiple fenestrated sheets in the media of the aorta and other large arteries. The fenestrations in the media are larger than those in the IEL. The adventitial elastin is more fibrous and often contains tubular elastin surrounding vasa vasorum when prepared by removing all non-elastin by placing the aorta in 0.1 N NaOH at 70-75°C for five hours. The fenestrations are larger near branches and in an experimentally created poststenotic dilatation. Atherosclerosis appears associated with both new elastin formation in early atherosclerosis and elastolysis in late disease

    A moving mesh generation strategy for solving an injector internal flow problem

    [EN] The ability to handle complex geometries is an important part of transient calculations; therefore, the need for fully automatic mesh generation capable of dealing with such geometries is quite demanded. In this paper a specific approach to fully automatic three-dimensional mesh generation is presented. An approach to moving the generated mesh is also outlined. In particular, the simulation of a diesel injector needle movement is sought. The movement of the needle was calculated on the basis of injection rate experimental data and injection rate predicted data with steady state boundaries and geometry.     Regulation of the formin cappuccino is critical for polarity of Drosophilao ocytes

    The Drosophila formin Cappuccino (Capu) creates an actin mesh‐like structure that traverses the oocyte during midoogenesis. This mesh is thought to prevent premature onset of fast cytoplasmic streaming which normally happens during late‐oogenesis. Proper cytoskeletal organization and cytoplasmic streaming are crucial for localization of polarity determinants such as osk, grk, bcd, and nanos mRNAs. Capu mutants disrupt these events, leading to female sterility. Capu is regulated by another nucleator, Spire, as well as by autoinhibition in vitro. Studies in vivo confirm that Spire modulates Capu's function in oocytes; however, how autoinhibition contributes is still unclear. To study the role of autoinhibition in flies, we expressed a Capu construct that is missing the Capu Inhibitory Domain, CapuΔN. Consistent with a gain of activity due to loss of autoinhibition, the actin mesh was denser in CapuΔN oocytes. Further, cytoplasmic streaming was delayed and fertility levels decreased. Localization of osk mRNA in early stages, and bcd and nanos in late stages, were disrupted in CapuΔN‐expressing oocytes. Finally, evidence that these phenotypes were due to a loss of autoinhibition comes from coexpression of the N‐terminal half of Capu with CapuΔN, which suppressed the defects in actin, cytoplasmic streaming and fertility. From these results, we conclude that Capu can be autoinhibited during Drosophila oocyte development

    Do Emotions Benefit Investment Decisions? Anticipatory Emotion and Investment Decisions in Non-professional Investors

    Increasing financial trading performance is big business. A lingering question within academia and industry concerns whether emotions improve or degrade trading performance. In this study, 30 participants distributed hypothetical wealth between a share (a risk) and the bank (paying a small, sure, gain) within four trading games. Skin Conductance Response was measured while playing the games to measure anticipatory emotion, a covert emotion signal that impacts decision-making. Anticipatory emotion was significantly associated with trading performance but the direction of the correlation was dependent upon the share’s movement. Thus, anticipatory emotion is neither wholly “good” nor “bad” for trading; instead, the relationship is context-dependent. This is one of the first studies exploring the association between anticipatory emotion and trading behaviour using trading games within an experimentally rigorous environment. Our findings elucidate the relationship between anticipatory emotion and financial decision-making and have applications for improving trading performance in novice and expert traders
