Pulse-Shape Discrimination of CaF2(Eu)
We measured the decay time of the scintillation pulses produced by electron
and nuclear recoils in CaF2(Eu) by a new fitting method. In the recoil energy
region 5-30 keVee, we found differences of the decay time between electron and
nuclear recoil events. In the recoil energy region above 20 keVee, we found
that the decay time is independent of the recoil energy.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Supersymmetric particle mass measurement with invariant mass correlations
The kinematic end-point technique for measuring the masses of supersymmetric
particles in R-Parity conserving models at hadron colliders is re-examined with
a focus on exploiting additional constraints arising from correlations in
invariant mass observables. The use of such correlations is shown to
potentially resolve the ambiguity in the interpretation of quark+lepton
end-points and enable discrimination between sequential two-body and three-body
lepton-producing decays. The use of these techniques is shown to improve the
SUSY particle mass measurement precision for the SPS1a benchmark model by at
least 20-30% compared to the conventional end-point technique.Comment: 29 pages, 23 .eps figures, JHEP3 style; v2 adds some references and

Supersymmetric particle mass measurement with the boost-corrected contransverse mass
A modification to the contransverse mass (MCT) technique for measuring the
masses of pair-produced semi-invisibly decaying heavy particles is proposed in
which MCT is corrected for non-zero boosts of the centre-of-momentum (CoM)
frame of the heavy states in the laboratory transverse plane. Lack of knowledge
of the mass of the CoM frame prevents exact correction for this boost, however
it is shown that a conservative correction can nevertheless be derived which
always generates an MCT value which is less than or equal to the true value of
MCT in the CoM frame. The new technique is demonstrated with case studies of
mass measurement with fully leptonic ttbar events and with SUSY events
possessing a similar final state.Comment: 33 pages, 33 .eps figures, JHEP3 styl
A Detailed Study of the Gluino Decay into the Third Generation Squarks at the CERN LHC
In supersymmetric models a gluino can decay into tb\tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_1
through a stop or a sbottom. The decay chain produces an edge structure in the
m_{tb} distribution. Monte Carlo simulation studies show that the end point and
the edge height would be measured at the CERN LHC by using a sideband
subtraction technique. The stop and sbottom masses as well as their decay
branching ratios are constrained by the measurement. We study interpretations
of the measurement in the minimal supergravity model. We also study the gluino
decay into tb and \tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_2 as well as the influence of the stop
left-right mixing on the m_{bb} distribution of the tagged events.Comment: revtex, 20 pages in PRD format, 35 eps file
Transverse mass and invariant mass observables for measuring the mass of a semi-invisibly decaying heavy particle
Formulae are derived for the positions of end-points in the invariant mass
and transverse mass distributions obtained from the products of heavy states
decaying to pairs of semi-invisibly decaying lighter states. Formulae are
derived both for the special case where the two decay chains are identical and
the more general case where they are different. The formulae are tested with a
simple case study of heavy SUSY higgs particles decaying to gauginos at the
LHC.Comment: 13 pages, 8 eps figure
Poor survival outcomes in HER2 positive breast cancer patients with low grade, node negative tumours
We present a retrospective analysis on a cohort of low-grade, node-negative patients showing that human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status significantly affects the survival in this otherwise very good prognostic group. Our results provide support for the use of adjuvant trastuzumab in patients who are typically classified as having very good prognosis, not routinely offered standard chemotherapy, and who as such do not fit current UK prescribing guidelines for trastuzumab
A hybrid method for determining particle masses at the Large Hadron Collider with fully identified cascade decays
A new technique for improving the precision of measurements of SUSY particle
masses at the LHC is introduced. The technique involves kinematic fitting of
events with two fully identified decay chains. We incorporate both event ETmiss
constraints and independent constraints provided by kinematic end-points in
experiment invariant mass distributions of SUSY decay products. Incorporation
of the event specific information maximises the information used in the fit and
is shown to reduce the mass measurement uncertainites by ~30% compared to
conventional fitting of experiment end-point constraints for the SPS1a
benchmark model.Comment: 10 pages, 2 .eps figures, JHEP3 styl
The effect of regional citrate anti-coagulation on the coagulation system in critically ill patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy for acute kidney injury - An observational cohort study
BACKGROUND: Regional anticoagulation with citrate is the recommended first line treatment for patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). There is wide variability in filter patency which may be due to differences in patient characteristics and local practice. It is also possible that citrate has effects on primary and secondary haemostasis, fibrinolysis and platelet function that are still unknown. The primary aim of the study is to describe the effect of citrate on coagulation and fibrinolysis pathways in both the patient and the haemodialysis circuit.
METHODS: The study will recruit 12 adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit, requiring CRRT with regional citrate anticoagulation for acute kidney injury. Patients with pre-existing thrombotic or bleeding tendencies will be excluded. Thrombin generation, clot lysis and platelet function will be measured at baseline and at 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 h after commencing CRRT (from the patient and from the circuit). We will describe the evolution of parameters over time as well as the differences in parameters between the patient and the circuit.
DISCUSSION: The study will provide new data on the effects of citrate during continuous renal replacement therapy which is not currently available. We will minimise confounding factors through the use of tight exclusion criteria and accept that this will slow down recruitment. Depending on the results, we hope to incorporate the findings into existing clinical guidelines and clinical practice with the aim to prevent premature filter clotting and interruptions in treatment.
TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered with clinicaltrials.gov on 10th June 2015 (NCT02486614)
A Measurement of Photon Production in Electron Avalanches in CF4
This paper presents a measurement of the ratio of photon to electron
production and the scintillation spectrum in a popular gas for time pro jection
chambers, carbon tetrafluoride (CF4), over the range of 200 to 800 nm; the
ratio is measured to be 0.34+/-0.04. This result is of particular importance
for a new generation of dark matter time projection chambers with directional
sensitivity which use CF4 as a fill gas.Comment: 19 pages, including appendix. 8 figure
Conceptualizing the adventure-sports coach
As a comparatively recent development, the adventure-sports coach struggles for a clear and distinct identity. The generic term ‘instructor’ no longer characterizes the role and function of this subgroup of outdoor professionals. Indeed, although the fields of adventure/outdoor education and leadership are comparatively well researched, the arrival of this ‘new kid on the block’ appears to challenge both the adventure-sports old guard and traditional views of sports coaching. In an attempt to offer clarity and stimulate debate, this paper attempts to conceptualize the adventure-sports coach in the context of the existing roles in the field and current motivations for activity in the outdoors. We identify issues that are specific to the adventure-sports coach while also recognizing those skills and competencies shared with other professionals, both in the adventure sports profession and traditional sports coaching fields. Based on this review, we offer a conceptual model which may be used to focus debate, stimulate research and, at a possible later stage, to underpin accreditation, training and professional development
