    Storage stability of encapsulated barberry's anthocyanin and its application in jelly formulation

    The barberry (Berberis vulgaris) extract which is a rich source of anthocyanin was used for encapsulation with three different wall materials i.e., combination of gum Arabic and maltodextrin (GA+MD), combination of maltodextrin and gelatin (MD+GE) and maltodextrin (MD) by spray drying process. In this context, the storage stability of encapsulated pigments was investigated under four storage temperatures (4, 25, 35 and 42 °C), four relative humidities (20, 30, 40 and 50%) and light illumination until 90 days. All wall materials largely increased the half-life of the encapsulated pigments during storage compared with non-encapsulated anthocyanins. MD+GA showed the highest encapsulation efficiency, lower degradation rate in all temperatures and was found as the most effective wall material in stabilizing the pigments. The encapsulated pigments were utilized in coloring jelly powder as an alternative of synthetic color. Sensory evaluation were run to identify best encapsulated natural color concentration in jelly powder formulation according to acceptability by consumers. A jelly with added 7% encapsulated color had higher scores than the commercial jelly containing synthetic color for all the sensory attributes evaluated. Physicochemical properties of produced jelly including moisture content, hygroscopicity, acidity, ash content and texture were not significantly different with control sample while, syneresis and solubility of the samples prepared with encapsulated color was significantly reduced. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    On the existence of normal maximal subgroups in division rings

    AbstractLet D be a division ring with centre F. Denote by D∗ the multiplicative group of D. The relation between valuations on D and maximal subgroups of D∗ is investigated. In the finite dimensional case, it is shown that F∗ has a maximal subgroup if Br(F) is non-trivial provided that the characteristic of F is zero. It is also proved that if F is a local or an algebraic number field, then D∗ contains a maximal subgroup that is normal in D∗. It should be observed that every maximal subgroup of D∗ contains either D′ or F∗, and normal maximal subgroups of D∗ contain D′, whereas maximal subgroups of D∗ do not necessarily contain F∗. It is then conjectured that the multiplicative group of any noncommutative division ring has a maximal subgroup

    Morphological abnormality among regenerated shoots of banana and plantain (Musa spp.) after in vitro multiplication with TDZ and BAP from excised shoottips

    Five cultivars of Musa spp (banana and plantain); ‘Berangan Intan’, ‘Berangan’ (AAA), ‘Rastali’, ‘Nangka’ (AAB) and ‘Baka Baling’ (ABB) were chosen to compare the effect of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) on multiplication efficiency in relation with frequency of abnormal shoot regeneration. Shoot tips of Musa spp. were cultured on MS medium supplemented with various concentrations (0.0, 11.1, 22.2, 33.3 and 44.4 ìM) of BAP and (0.0, 0.5, 2, 5 and 7.5 ìM) of TDZ. Increasing BAP above 22.2 ìM and 33.3 ìM increased the number of shoots in ‘Berangan Intan’,‘Berangan’, ‘Rastali’, ‘Nangka’ and ‘Baka Baling’ respectively, but above 33.3 ìM significantly caused higher gross of abnormal shoot regeneration. TDZ in the media up to 2 ìM for ‘Baka Baling’, ‘Nangka’ and ‘Rastali’ and 5 ìM for ‘Berangan Intan’ and ‘Berangan’ increased the number of shoots per explant,however TDZ at 5 ìM resulted in high number of abnormal shoots. In conclusion BAP at 22.2 ìM and TDZ at 2 ìM were assumed to be the most suitable for commercial micropropagation system with low frequency of abnormal shoot production for both banana and plantain

    Impact of loss on the wave dynamics in photonic waveguide lattices

    We analyze the impact of loss in lattices of coupled optical waveguides and find that in such case, the hopping between adjacent waveguides is necessarily complex. This results not only in a transition of the light spreading from ballistic to diffusive, but also in a new kind of diffraction that is caused by loss dispersion.     Deformation behavior and processing map of ATI 425 with initial lamellar microstructure

    The effect of hot compression temperatures and strain rates on deformation behavior and resultant microstructure of ATI 425 alloy with initial lamellar microstructure was investigated in this study. The temperature and strain rate of the hot compression test were chosen to be in the 700-1100 °C and 0.001-1 s-1 ranges, respectively. The stress-strain curve and microstructure evaluation show that the alloy's flow softening is associated with globularization and dynamic recrystallization mechanisms. The constitutive equation calculates the activation energy for the α/β and β regions to be 348 kJ/mol and 201 kJ/mol, respectively. Dynamic recovery and partial recrystallization are the dominant structure modification mechanisms in the beta single-phase region. Bending and fragmentation of alpha plates is the dominant mechanism of microstructure promotion in the α/β region at low temperatures and low strain rates, less than 0.1s-1. Local shear and alpha plate break-up are the main factors in structural modification at high strain rates, greater than 0.1s-1. The extracted process map at 0.5 strain revealed three zones: instability, safe zone, and peak zone, with power dissipation efficiencies of 0 -0.25%, 30-40%, and above 40%

    An adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy controller for maximum power point tracking of photovoltaic systems

Based on adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), this method combines the learning abilities of artificial neural networks and the ability of fuzzy logic to handle imprecise data. It is able to handle non-linear and time varying problems hence making it suitable for accurate maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to ensure PV systems work effectively. The performance of the proposed method is compared to that of a fuzzy logic based MPPT algorithm to demonstrate its effectiveness

    Microencapsulation of saffron petal anthocyanins with cress seed gum compared with Arabic gum through freeze drying

    In this research, encapsulation efficiency of cress seed gum (CSG) as a native hydrocolloid was compared with Arabic gum (AG) and maltodextrin (dextrose equivalent of 20 (M20), and 7 (M7)) for saffron (Crocus sativus) petal's extract by freeze drying method. Combinations of CSG-M20, AG-M20, and M7-M20 with ratios of 50:50 and M20 alone (100%) were used as wall materials. A mixture of 1:5 (based on dry matter) between core (concentrated anthocyanin extract of saffron petal) and wall materials were freeze dried and stability of encapsulated anthocyanins along with color parameters (a∗, b∗, L∗, C, H° and TCD) of final powders were measured during 10 weeks of storage (at 35 °C as an accelerated method). Total anthocyanins were determined through pH differential method every week. Four prepared formulations of encapsulated powders didn't show any significant differences (P > 0.01) in terms of total anthocyanin content measured immediately after production and after 10 weeks storage. AG-M20 mixture and M20 alone showed the highest and lowest TCD, respectively. The mixture of CSG-M20 in comparison with AG-M20 and M20 had the same protecting effect (P < 0.01) but showed a relatively high TCD (9.33). © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
