SkyMapper and the Southern Sky Survey - a resource for the southern sky
SkyMapper is amongst the first of a new generation of dedicated, wide-field
survey telescopes. The 1.3m SkyMapper telescope features a 5.7 square degree
field-of-view Cassegrain imager and will see first light in late 2007. The
primary goal of the facility is to conduct the Southern Sky Survey a six
colour, six epoch survey of the southern sky. The survey will provide
photometry for objects between 8th and 23rd magnitude with global photometric
accuracy of 0.03 magnitudes and astrometry to 50 mas. This will represent a
valuable scientific resource for the southern sky and in addition provide a

Studies of aging and HV break down problems during development and operation of MSGC and GEM detectors for the Inner Tracking System of HERA-B
The results of five years of development of the inner tracking system of the
HERA-B experiment and first experience from the data taking period of the year
2000 are reported. The system contains 184 chambers, covering a sensitive area
of about 20 * 20 cm2 each. The detector is based on microstrip gas counters
(MSGCs) with diamond like coated (DLC) glass wafers and gas electron
multipliers (GEMs). The main problems in the development phase were gas
discharges in intense hadron beams and aging in a high radiation dose
environment. The observation of gas discharges which damage the electrode
structure of the MSGC led to the addition of the GEM as a first amplification
step. Spurious sparking at the GEM cannot be avoided completely. It does not
affect the GEM itself but can produce secondary damage of the MSGC if the
electric field between the GEM and the MSGC is above a threshold depending on
operation conditions. We observed that aging does not only depend on the dose
but also on the spot size of the irradiated area. Ar-DME mixtures had to be
abandoned whereas a mixture of 70% Ar and 30% CO2 showed no serious aging
effects up to about 40 mC/cm deposited charge on the anodes. X-ray measurements
indicate that the DLC of the MSGC is deteriorated by the gas amplification
process. As a consequence, long term gain variations are expected. The Inner
Tracker has successfully participated in the data taking at HERA-B during

SkyMapper Filter Set: Design and Fabrication of Large Scale Optical Filters
The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey will be conducted from Siding Spring
Observatory with u, v, g, r, i and z filters that comprise glued glass
combination filters of dimension 309x309x15 mm. In this paper we discuss the
rationale for our bandpasses and physical characteristics of the filter set.
The u, v, g and z filters are entirely glass filters which provide highly
uniform band passes across the complete filter aperture. The i filter uses
glass with a short-wave pass coating, and the r filter is a complete dielectric
filter. We describe the process by which the filters were constructed,
including the processes used to obtain uniform dielectric coatings and
optimized narrow band anti-reflection coatings, as well as the technique of
gluing the large glass pieces together after coating using UV transparent epoxy

Limb activation ameliorates body-related deficits in spatial neglect
Many neglect patients show deficits in the mental representation of their contralesional body side or body parts, termed personal neglect. These deficits include impairments in identifying body parts on schematic drawings of human bodies. Limb activation and alertness cues have been shown to modulate neglect transiently, and are effective treatments for several symptoms of the neglect syndrome. Here, we tested on eight patients with right-hemispheric stroke and left-sided spatial neglect whether these two techniques modulate deficits in the mental representation of hands, assessed with a hand-test in which the subjects had to decide whether a depicted schematic hand belongs to the left or right side of the human body. The results showed that neglect patients made marginally significant (p = 0.065) more errors in left-hand-decisions than right-hand-decisions, indicating a neglect-specific disorder. Moreover, we found that left-sided limb activation but not non-lateralized alertness cueing (a loud noise immediately before patients made their perceptual decision) significantly reduced misidentifications for depicted left hands as compared to baseline. No effect of any intervention was observed on error rates for depicted right hands. We conclude that the amelioration of the performance in the hand task is modulated by the activation of the body schema or other body representations through left-sided limb activation
High-Resolution Spectroscopic Study of Extremely Metal-Poor Star Candidates from the SkyMapper Survey
The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey is carrying out a search for the most
metal-poor stars in the Galaxy. It identifies candidates by way of its unique
filter set that allows for estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters. The
set includes a narrow filter centered on the Ca II K 3933A line, enabling a
robust estimate of stellar metallicity. Promising candidates are then confirmed
with spectroscopy. We present the analysis of Magellan-MIKE high-resolution
spectroscopy of 122 metal-poor stars found by SkyMapper in the first two years
of commissioning observations. 41 stars have [Fe/H] <= -3.0. Nine have [Fe/H]
<= -3.5, with three at [Fe/H] ~ -4. A 1D LTE abundance analysis of the elements
Li, C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Ba and Eu shows
these stars have [X/Fe] ratios typical of other halo stars. One star with low
[X/Fe]
[X/Fe values appears to be "Fe-enhanced," while another star has an extremely
large [Sr/Ba] ratio: >2. Only one other star is known to have a comparable
value. Seven stars are "CEMP-no" stars ([C/Fe] > 0.7, [Ba/Fe] < 0). 21 stars
exhibit mild r-process element enhancements (0.3 <=[Eu/Fe] < 1.0), while four
stars have [Eu/Fe] >= 1.0. These results demonstrate the ability to identify
extremely metal-poor stars from SkyMapper photometry, pointing to increased
sample sizes and a better characterization of the metal-poor tail of the halo

Low-lying magnetic loops in the solar internetwork
The aim of this work is to study the structure of the magnetic field vector
in the internetwork and search for the presence of small-scale loops. We invert
1.56 micron spectropolarimetric observations of internetwork regions at disc
centre by applying the SIR code. This allows us to recover the atmospheric
parameters that play a role in the formation of these spectral lines. We are
mainly interested in the structure of the magnetic field vector. We find that
many opposite polarity elements of the internetwork are connected by short
(2-6''), low-lying (photospheric) loops. These loops connect at least the 10-20
% of the internetwork flux visible in our data. Also we have some evidence that
points towards a dynamic scenario which can be produced by the emergence of
internetwork magnetic flux.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letter
Ultrafast carrier relaxation in GaN, In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)N and an In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)/In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N Multiple Quantum Well
Room temperature, wavelength non-degenerate ultrafast pump/probe measurements
were performed on GaN and InGaN epilayers and an InGaN multiple quantum well
structure. Carrier relaxation dynamics were investigated as a function of
excitation wavelength and intensity. Spectrally-resolved sub-picosecond
relaxation due to carrier redistribution and QW capture was found to depend
sensitively on the wavelength of pump excitation. Moreover, for pump
intensities above a threshold of 100 microJ/cm2, all samples demonstrated an
additional emission feature arising from stimulated emission (SE). SE is
evidenced as accelerated relaxation (< 10 ps) in the pump-probe data,
fundamentally altering the re-distribution of carriers. Once SE and carrier
redistribution is completed, a slower relaxation of up to 1 ns for GaN and
InGaN epilayers, and 660 ps for the MQW sample, indicates carrier recombination
through spontaneous emission.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
The SuperMACHO Microlensing Survey
We present the first results from our next-generation microlensing survey,
the SuperMACHO project. We are using the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope and the
MOSAIC imager to carry out a search for microlensing toward the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We plan to ascertain the nature of the population
responsible for the excess microlensing rate seen by the MACHO project. Our
observing strategy is optimized to measure the differential microlensing rate
across the face of the LMC. We find this derivative to be relatively
insensitive to the details of the LMC's internal structure but a strong
discriminant between Galactic halo and LMC self lensing. In December 2003 we
completed our third year of survey operations. 2003 also marked the first year
of real-time microlensing alerts and photometric and spectroscopic followup. We
have extracted several dozen microlensing candidates, and we present some
preliminary light curves and related information. Similar to the MACHO project,
we find SNe behind the LMC to be a significant contaminant - this background
has not been completely removed from our current single-color candidate sample.
Our follow-up strategy is optimized to discriminate between SNe and true
