    Parameterization invariance and shape equations of elastic axisymmetric vesicles

    The issue of different parameterizations of the axisymmetric vesicle shape addressed by Hu Jian-Guo and Ou-Yang Zhong-Can [ Phys.Rev. E {\bf 47} (1993) 461 ] is reassesed, especially as it transpires through the corresponding Euler - Lagrange equations of the associated elastic energy functional. It is argued that for regular, smooth contours of vesicles with spherical topology, different parameterizations of the surface are equivalent and that the corresponding Euler - Lagrange equations are in essence the same. If, however, one allows for discontinuous (higher) derivatives of the contour line at the pole, the differently parameterized Euler - Lagrange equations cease to be equivalent and describe different physical problems.     EM algorithm for Bayesian estimation of genomic breeding values

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In genomic selection, a model for prediction of genome-wide breeding value (GBV) is constructed by estimating a large number of SNP effects that are included in a model. Two Bayesian methods based on MCMC algorithm, Bayesian shrinkage regression (BSR) method and stochastic search variable selection (SSVS) method, (which are called BayesA and BayesB, respectively, in some literatures), have been so far proposed for the estimation of SNP effects. However, much computational burden is imposed on the MCMC-based Bayesian methods. A method with both high computing efficiency and prediction accuracy is desired to be developed for practical use of genomic selection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>EM algorithm applicable for BSR is described. Subsequently, we propose a new EM-based Bayesian method, called wBSR (weighted BSR), which is a modification of BSR incorporating a weight for each SNP according to the strength of its association to a trait. Simulation experiments show that the computational time is much reduced with wBSR based on EM algorithm and the accuracy in predicting GBV is improved by wBSR in comparison with BSR based on MCMC algorithm. However, the accuracy of predicted GBV with wBSR is inferior to that with SSVS based on MCMC algorithm which is currently considered to be a method of choice for genomic selection.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>EM-based wBSR method proposed in this study is much advantageous over MCMC-based Bayesian methods in computational time and can predict GBV more accurately than MCMC-based BSR. Therefore, wBSR is considered a practical method for genomic selection with a large number of SNP markers.</p

    Ferromagnetism and giant magnetoresistance in the rare earth fullerides Eu6-xSrxC60

    We have studied crystal structure, magnetism and electric transport properties of a europium fulleride Eu6C60 and its Sr-substituted compounds, Eu6-xSrxC60. They have a bcc structure, which is an isostructure of other M6C60 (M represents an alkali atom or an alkaline earth atom). Magnetic measurements revealed that magnetic moment is ascribed to the divalent europium atom with S = 7/2 spin, and a ferromagnetic transition was observed at TC = 10 - 14 K. In Eu6C60, we also confirm the ferromagnetic transition by heat capacity measurement. The striking feature in Eu6-xSrxC60} is very large negative magnetoresistance at low temperature; the resistivity ratio \rho(H = 9 T)/\rho(H = 0 T) reaches almost 10^{-3} at 1 K in Eu6C60. Such large magnetoresistance is the manifestation of a strong pi-f interaction between conduction carriers on C60 and 4f electrons of Eu.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A Radial Sclerosing Lesion Mimicking Breast Cancer on Mammography in a Young Woman

    A spiculated mass on a mammogram is highly suggestive of malignancy. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman with a radial sclerosing lesion that mimicked breast cancer on mammography. She visited her physician after palpating a lump in her left breast. Mammography showed architectural distortion in the upper inner quadrant of the left breast. Ultrasonography showed a low echoic area with an ambiguous boundary. Core needle biopsy was performed because of the suspicion of malignancy. Histological examination did not reveal any malignant cells. After 6 months, the breast lump became larger and the patient was referred to our hospital. Mammography performed in our hospital showed a spiculated mass, and therefore mammotome biopsy was performed. Histological examination revealed dense fibroelastic stroma with a wide variety of mastopathic changes, leading to a diagnosis of a radial sclerosing lesion. One year after the biopsy, the lump on her left breast had disappeared and mammography showed no spiculated mass

    Identification of 45 New Neutron-Rich Isotopes Produced by In-Flight Fission of a 238U Beam at 345 MeV/nucleon

    A search for new isotopes using in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon 238U beam has been carried out at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Fission fragments were analyzed and identified by using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS. We observed 45 new neutron-rich isotopes: 71Mn, 73,74Fe, 76Co, 79Ni, 81,82Cu, 84,85Zn, 87Ga, 90Ge, 95Se, 98Br, 101Kr, 103Rb, 106,107Sr, 108,109Y, 111,112Zr, 114,115Nb, 115,116,117Mo, 119,120Tc, 121,122,123,124Ru, 123,124,125,126Rh, 127,128Pd, 133Cd, 138Sn, 140Sb, 143Te, 145I, 148Xe, and 152Ba

    About females and males: continuity and discontinuity in flies

    Through the decades of relentless and dedicated studies in Drosophila melanogaster, the pathway that governs sexual development has been elucidated in great detail and has become a paradigm in understanding fundamental cell-fate decisions. However, recent phylogenetic studies show that the molecular strategy used in Drosophila deviates in some important aspects from those found in other dipteran flies and suggest that the Drosophila pathway is likely to be a derivative of a simpler and more common principle. In this essay, I will discuss the evolutionary plasticity of the sex-determining pathway based on studies in the common housefly, Musca domestica. Diversification appears to primarily arise from subtle differences in the regulation of the key switch gene transformer at the top of the pathway. On the basis of these findings I propose a new idea on how the Drosophila pathway may have evolved from a more archetypal system such as in M. domestica. In essence, the arrival of an X counting mechanism mediated by Sex-lethal to compensate for X linked gene dose differences set the stage for an intimate coupling of the two pathways. Its precedent recruitment to the dosage compensation pathway allowed for an intervention in the regulation of transformer where it gradually and eventually' completely substituted for a need of transformer autoregulation

    Structure of 136Sn and the Z = 50 magicity

    The first 2+ excited state in the neutron-rich tin isotope 136Sn has been identified at 682(13) keV by measuring γ -rays in coincidence with the one proton removal channel from 137Sb. This value is higher than those known for heavier even-even N = 86 isotones, indicating the Z = 50 shell closure. It compares well to the first 2+ excited state of the lighter tin isotope 134Sn, which may suggest that the seniority scheme also holds for 136Sn. Our result confirms the trend of lower 2+ excitation energies of even-even tin isotopes beyond N = 82 compared to the known values in between the two doubly magic nuclei 100Sn and 132Sn. © The Author(s) 2014.published_or_final_versio

    Anti-COX-2 autoantibody is a novel biomarker of immune aplastic anemia

    In immune aplastic anemia (IAA), severe pancytopenia results from the immune-mediated destruction of hematopoietic stem cells. Several autoantibodies have been reported, but no clinically applicable autoantibody tests are available for IAA. We screened autoantibodies using a microarray containing >9000 proteins and validated the findings in a large international cohort of IAA patients (n = 405) and controls (n = 815). We identified a novel autoantibody that binds to the C-terminal end of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2, aCOX-2 Ab). In total, 37% of all adult IAA patients tested positive for aCOX-2 Ab, while only 1.7% of the controls were aCOX-2 Ab positive. Sporadic non-IAA aCOX-2 Ab positive cases were observed among patients with related bone marrow failure diseases, multiple sclerosis, and type I diabetes, whereas no aCOX-2 Ab seropositivity was detected in the healthy controls, in patients with non-autoinflammatory diseases or rheumatoid arthritis. In IAA, anti-COX-2 Ab positivity correlated with age and the HLA-DRB1*15:01 genotype. 83% of the >40 years old IAA patients with HLA-DRB1*15:01 were anti-COX-2 Ab positive, indicating an excellent sensitivity in this group. aCOX-2 Ab positive IAA patients also presented lower platelet counts. Our results suggest that aCOX-2 Ab defines a distinct subgroup of IAA and may serve as a valuable disease biomarker.Peer reviewe
