    Problems with Using Evolutionary Theory in Philosophy

    Does science move toward truths? Are present scientific theories (approximately) true? Should we invoke truths to explain the success of science? Do our cognitive faculties track truths? Some philosophers say yes, while others say no, to these questions. Interestingly, both groups use the same scientific theory, viz., evolutionary theory, to defend their positions. I argue that it begs the question for the former group to do so because their positive answers imply that evolutionary theory is warranted, whereas it is self-defeating for the latter group to do so because their negative answers imply that evolutionary theory is unwarranted

    Using human induced pluripotent stem cells to model cerebellar disease: Hope and hype

    The cerebellum forms a highly ordered and indispensible component of motor function within the adult neuraxis, consisting of several distinct cellular subtypes. Cerebellar disease, through a variety of genetic and acquired causes, results in the loss of function of defined subclasses of neurons, and remains a significant and untreatable health care burden. The scarcity of therapies in this arena can partially be explained by unresolved disease mechanisms due to inaccessibility of human cerebellar neurons in a relevant experimental context where initiating disease mechanisms could be functionally elucidated, or drug screens conducted. In this review we discuss the potential promise of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for regenerative neurology, with a particular emphasis on in vitro modelling of cerebellar degeneration. We discuss progress made thus far using hiPSC-based models of neurodegeneration, noting the relatively slower pace of discovery made in modelling cerebellar dysfunction. We conclude by speculating how strategies attempting cerebellar differentiation from hiPSCs can be refined to allow the generation of accurate disease models. This in turn will permit a greater understanding of cerebellar pathophysiology to inform mechanistically rationalised therapies, which are desperately needed in this field

    Anisotropic softening of collective charge modes in the vicinity of critical doping in a doped Mott insulator

    Momentum resolved inelastic resonant x-ray scattering is used to map the evolution of charge excitations over a large range of energies, momenta and doping levels in the electron doped Mott insulator class Nd2x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4. As the doping induced AFM-SC (antiferromagnetic-superconducting) transition is approached, we observe an anisotropic softening of collective charge modes over a large energy scale along the Gamma to (\pi,\pi)-direction, whereas the modes exhibit broadening (\sim 1 eV) with relatively little softening along Gamma to (\pi,0) with respect to the parent Mott insulator (x=0). Our study indicates a systematic collapse of the gap consistent with the scenario that the system dopes uniformly with electrons even though the softening of the modes involves an unusually large energy scale.Comment: 5 pages + 5 Figure

    Chemostratigraphy of Upper Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) sequences from the Southern North Sea (United Kingdom)

    Important gas reservoirs occur in the Upper Carboniferous coal measures and red beds of the Southern North Sea. The thick red beds of the Boulton and Ketch formations are difficult to correlate, due to poor internal seismic definition, repetitive e-log signatures, and their barren nature. Although the underlying coal measures of the Westoe, Cleaver, and Caister Formations have better seismic resolution and contain palynomorphs, coals that die out laterally and the lack of diagnostic taxa over certain intervals contribute to their correlation being problematical. However, the application of chemostratigraphy to more than sixty wells from numerous fields in UK Quadrants 44 and 49, as well as from Dutch sector Blocks E, F, and K, allows the establishment of an independent, robust, detailed correlation framework for the aforesaid red beds and coal measures. Presented in this paper are correlative chemostratigraphic reference sections for the Caister, Westoe, Cleaver, Ketch, Boulton, and Step Graben formations. The chemostratigraphic zonations erected for these formations are based on variations in silty claystone geochemistry that can be tied to changes in provenance, climate, and depositional environment. In addition, the zonations are supported by stratigraphic changes in sandstone and coal geochemistry, the geochemical correlation of tonsteins and marine bands, and the recognition of different types of paleosol in the above formations. The chemostratigraphic correlation framework enables specific broad intervals ("packages") to be correlated between fields and is also used to constrain seismic correlations with a view to highlighting potential exploration targets. Furthermore, the same framework allows much thinner intervals ("units" and "subunits") to be correlated within fields: these smaller-scale correlations enhance reservoir correlations with respect to the development of fields such as Boulton, Schooner, Tyne, Ketch, and Topaz. In addition to using inorganic geochemical data to characterize and correlate sedimentological packages, data can also used to identify and correlate marker horizons and surfaces (tonsteins, coals, marine bands, major paleosols), which may be highly correlative low-diachrony surfaces, which greatly enhance the overall validity of the stratigraphic correlation scheme
