Phase Coherence in Multiple Pulse Optical Spectroscopy
In this paper we describe a new technique for the generation of multiple pulse phase coherent sequences in optical spectroscopy. The technique is an extension of the acousto-optic modulation and fluorescence detection methods developed for optical transitions by Zewail and Orlowski (Zewail et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 48, 256 (1977); Orlowski et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 54, 197 (1978)). Application of these multiple pulse trains (of different phases) to optical transitions of two-level and multilevel systems is demonstrated experimentally. It is shown that they can be used to (i) suppress spontaneous emission background, (ii) enhance coherent transients such as photon echoes, (iii) measure additional relaxation parameters in systems with complex rotational-vibrational levels, and (iv) enhance the effective laser bandwidths through composite pulse trains, as demonstrated on I2 gas. Finally, the potential of this development is extended to the possibility of observing selective multiquantum excitation in molecules
An experimental investigation of gas jets in confined swirling air flow
The fluid dynamics of jets in confined swirling flows which is of importance to designers of turbine combustors and solid fuel ramjets used to power missiles fired from cannons were examined. The fluid dynamics of gas jets of different densities in confined swirling flows were investigated. Mean velocity and turbulence measurements are made with a one color, one component laser velocimeter operating in the forward scatter mode. It is shown that jets in confined flow with large area ratio are highly dissipative which results in both air and helium/air jet centerline velocity decays. For air jets, the jet like behavior in the tube center disappears at about 20 diameters downstream of the jet exit. This phenomenon is independent of the initial jet velocity. The turbulence field at this point also decays to that of the background swirling flow. A jet like behavior in the tube center is noticed even at 40 diameters for the helium/air jets. The subsequent flow and turbulence field depend highly on the initial jet velocity. The jets are fully turbulent, and the cause of this difference in behavior is attributed to the combined action swirl and density difference. This observation can have significant impact on the design of turbine combustors and solid fuel ramjets subject to spin

Investigating the Intelligibility of a Computer Vision System for Blind Users
Computer vision systems to help blind usersare becoming increasingly common yet often these systems are not intelligible. Our work investigates the intelligibility of a wearable computer vision system to help blind users locate and identify people in their vicinity. Providing a continuous stream of information, this system allows us to explore intelligibility through interaction and instructions, going beyond studies of intelligibility that focus on explaining a decision a computer vision system might make. In a study with 13 blind users, we explored whether varying instructions (either basic or enhanced) about how the system worked would change blind users’ experience of the system. We found offering a more detailed set of instructions did not affect how successful users were using the system nor their perceived workload. We did, however, find evidence of significant differences in what they knew about the system, and they employed different, and potentially more effective, use strategies. Our findings have important implications for researchers and designers of computer vision systemsfor blind users, as well more general implications for understanding what it means to make interactive computer vision systems intelligible
