    Memoized Symbolic Execution

    This paper introduces memoized symbolic execution (Memoise), a novel approach for more efficient application of forward symbolic execution, which is a well-studied technique for systematic exploration of program behaviors based on bounded execution paths. Our key insight is that application of symbolic execution often requires several successive runs of the technique on largely similar underlying problems, e.g., running it once to check a program to find a bug, fixing the bug, and running it again to check the modified program. Memoise introduces a trie-based data structure that stores the key elements of a run of symbolic execution. Maintenance of the trie during successive runs allows re-use of previously computed results of symbolic execution without the need for re-computing them as is traditionally done. Experiments using our prototype embodiment of Memoise show the benefits it holds in various standard scenarios of using symbolic execution, e.g., with iterative deepening of exploration depth, to perform regression analysis, or to enhance coverage

    A symplectic dynamics approach to the spatial isosceles three-body problem

    We study the spatial isosceles three-body problem from the perspective of Symplectic Dynamics. For certain choices of mass ratio, angular momentum, and energy, the dynamics on the energy surface is equivalent to a Reeb flow on the tight three-sphere. We find a Hopf link formed by the Euler orbit and a symmetric brake orbit, which spans an open book decomposition whose pages are annulus-like global surfaces of section. In the case of large mass ratios, the Hopf link is non-resonant, forcing the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits. The rotation number of the Euler orbit plays a fundamental role in the existence of periodic orbits and their symmetries. We explore such symmetries in the Hill region and show that the Euler orbit is negative hyperbolic for an open set of parameters while it can never be positive hyperbolic. Finally, we address convexity and determine for each parameter whether the energy surface is strictly convex, convex, or non-convex.     Feedback-Driven Dynamic Invariant Discovery

    Program invariants can help software developers identify program properties that must be preserved as the software evolves, however, formulating correct invariants can be challenging. In this work, we introduce iDiscovery, a technique which leverages symbolic execution to improve the quality of dynamically discovered invariants computed by Daikon. Candidate invariants generated by Daikon are synthesized into assertions and instrumented onto the program. The instrumented code is executed symbolically to generate new test cases that are fed back to Daikon to help further re ne the set of candidate invariants. This feedback loop is executed until a x-point is reached. To mitigate the cost of symbolic execution, we present optimizations to prune the symbolic state space and to reduce the complexity of the generated path conditions. We also leverage recent advances in constraint solution reuse techniques to avoid computing results for the same constraints across iterations. Experimental results show that iDiscovery converges to a set of higher quality invariants compared to the initial set of candidate invariants in a small number of iterations

    Responses of soil respiration and its temperature/moisture sensitivity to precipitation in three subtropical forests in southern China

    Both long-term observation data and model simulations suggest an increasing chance of serious drought in the dry season and extreme flood in the wet season in southern China, yet little is known about how changes in precipitation pattern will affect soil respiration in the region. We conducted a field experiment to study the responses of soil respiration to precipitation manipulations – precipitation exclusion to mimic drought, double precipitation to simulate flood, and ambient precipitation as control (abbr. EP, DP and AP, respectively) – in three subtropical forests in southern China. The three forest sites include Masson pine forest (PF), coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (MF) and monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest (BF). Our observations showed that altered precipitation strongly influenced soil respiration, not only through the well-known direct effects of soil moisture on plant and microbial activities, but also by modification of both moisture and temperature sensitivity of soil respiration. In the dry season, soil respiration and its temperature sensitivity, as well as fine root and soil microbial biomass, showed rising trends with precipitation increases in the three forest sites. Contrarily, the moisture sensitivity of soil respiration decreased with precipitation increases. In the wet season, different treatments showed different effects in three forest sites. The EP treatment decreased fine root biomass, soil microbial biomass, soil respiration and its temperature sensitivity, but enhanced soil moisture sensitivity in all three forest sites. The DP treatment significantly increased soil respiration, fine root and soil microbial biomass in the PF only, and no significant change was found for the soil temperature sensitivity. However, the DP treatment in the MF and BF reduced soil temperature sensitivity significantly in the wet season. Our results indicated that soil respiration would decrease in the three subtropical forests if soil moisture continues to decrease in the future. More rainfall in the wet season could have limited effect on the response of soil respiration to the rising of temperature in the BF and MF

    Statistics of Dissipation and Enstrophy Induced by a Set of Burgers Vortices

    Dissipation and enstropy statistics are calculated for an ensemble of modified Burgers vortices in equilibrium under uniform straining. Different best-fit, finite-range scaling exponents are found for locally-averaged dissipation and enstrophy, in agreement with existing numerical simulations and experiments. However, the ratios of dissipation and enstropy moments supported by axisymmetric vortices of any profile are finite. Therefore the asymptotic scaling exponents for dissipation and enstrophy induced by such vortices are equal in the limit of infinite Reynolds number.Comment: Revtex (4 pages) with 4 postscript figures included via psfi

    KRAS Ubiquitination at Lysine 104 Retains Exchange Factor Regulation by Dynamically Modulating the Conformation of the Interface

    RAS proteins function as highly regulated molecular switches that control cellular growth. In addition to regulatory proteins, RAS undergoes a number of posttranslational modifications (PTMs) that regulate its activity. Lysine 104, a hot spot for multiple PTMs, is a highly conserved residue that forms key interactions that stabilize the RAS helix-2(H2)/helix-3(H3) interface. Mutation at 104 attenuates interaction with guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs), whereas ubiquitination at lysine 104 retains GEF regulation. To elucidate how ubiquitination modulates RAS function, we generated monoubiquitinated KRAS at 104 using chemical biology approaches and conducted biochemical, NMR, and computational analyses. We find that ubiquitination promotes a new dynamic interaction network and alters RAS conformational dynamics to retain GEF function. These findings reveal a mechanism by which ubiquitination can regulate protein function

    Implicit racial attitudes influence perceived emotional intensity on other-race faces

    An ability to accurately perceive and evaluate out-group members' emotions plays a critical role in intergroup interactions. Here we showed that Chinese participants' implicit attitudes toward White people bias their perception and judgment of emotional intensity of White people's facial expressions such as anger, fear and sadness. We found that Chinese participants held pro-Chinese/anti-White implicit biases that were assessed in an evaluative implicit association test (IAT). Moreover, their implicit biases positively predicted the perceived intensity of White people's angry, fearful and sad facial expressions but not for happy expressions. This study demonstrates that implicit racial attitudes can influence perception and judgment of a range of emotional expressions.
